In addition to the Regional Rail Delivery Authority that would oversee the delivery of key rail projects in the region, including the Toowoomba to Brisbane electric fast rail, the extension of the Gold Coast line to Coolangatta, and the Sunshine Coast line to Caloundra. I strongly urge that this authority be given the power to deliver segregated active transport routes alongside the rail projects.

The inclusion of segregated active transport routes would provide significant benefits to the region, promoting sustainable transport options and encouraging active travel. The routes would provide safe and efficient connections between key destinations and communities along the rail corridors, supporting economic growth and regional development.

The Regional Rail Delivery Authority, with its significant project delivery powers and expertise, would be well-suited to oversee the planning, design, and construction of these active transport routes. The Authority would be responsible for engaging with key stakeholders, managing the procurement process, and ensuring that the routes meet the necessary safety and regulatory requirements.

In addition to the benefits of the rail projects themselves, the inclusion of active transport routes would provide a more integrated and sustainable transport system for the region. This would reduce congestion on roads and highways, improve health and wellbeing outcomes for communities, and support the transition to a low-carbon economy.

A Regional Rail Delivery Authority with the power to deliver segregated active transport routes alongside the rail projects would bring significant benefits to the region. Thus, providing improved transport options, supporting economic growth and regional development, and promoting sustainable transport solutions which is inline with the proposed Olympic Organisation's legacy outcomes and underlying Government objectives.

We are advocating for a Public Transport Authority, under which heavy rail (including regional) and active transport would be managed.  I don't support a Regional Rail Delivery Authority.

Couriermail --> Cyclists wearing helmets and safety gear perceived as 'less human', study finds $

QuoteAustralian cyclists are being dehumanised and face a "hostile environment" as they "do battle" on the roads, a report has found.

Cyclists wearing helmets and safety gear were perceived as less human, a nationwide study has found.

The report, by academic Dr Mark Limb, found that with the most overt safety equipment the less human they are seen.

Dr Limb said it may be connected to how unpopular cyclists can be among certain sectors of the community, but further research was needed.

And men were more likely to dehumanise cyclists, Dr Limb, an urban planner at QUT, said.

"That maybe has something to do with their notions of risk avoidance and they are less risk averse than women." ...

Counting our way to better active transport data
28th June 2023

Minister for Transport and Main Roads and Minister for Digital Services
The Honourable Mark Bailey

. Active transport counter and display technologies launched in two locations in Brisbane
. The trial will run for four months
. The displays also enable information to be shared with path users including safety messages, time, date and temperature

A trial of innovative active transport counter and display technologies has kicked off in two locations in Brisbane.

The four-month trial will run to September 2023 and test two counter and display technologies for measuring and monitoring the number of people using cycle routes.

The trial counters are located on the Canon Garland Overpass near Centenary Cycleway at Toowong and the Veloway 1 at Woolloongabba.

In addition to displaying real-time daily and year-to-date count data, the displays enable other information such as time of day, temperature, and encouragement and safety messages, to be shared with path users.

The trial will deliver insights about the functionality and suitability of the technologies to assess whether they could be potentially rolled out to other Queensland locations in the future.

Throughout the trial, feedback will be gathered from path users about their experience with the counters through an online survey.

Quotes attributable to the Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey:

"This trial of new technology is being delivered in partnership with local Queensland businesses."

"This will give us real time data on how many people are using the paths, and whether a person is walking, riding a bicycle or personal mobility device such as an e-scooter.

"Increasing the volume and timeliness of data we have about how our active transport network is being used, will help us make more informed decisions.

"The trial will also help us understand how the display of user counts and other information can enhance people's experience when they're out walking and riding".

Quotes attributable to Bicycle Queensland CEO Lisa Davies-Jones:

"Making data counts public is a good thing. It's good from a transparency perspective, and it's good from an encouragement perspective.

"Bicycle Queensland's members across the state are always keen to see the State's commitment to bike riding translated into more great infrastructure which gets people moving!."

That's good as most separations don't necessarily need to be gold plated.

I love the "Trialling a new way"!!!!  What was the old way......nothing?

Seriously the rate of rollout is internationally embarrassing.  I am sure they will claim this as World Class Bikeway

It's what should be the bare minimum to be frank. I'm disappointed that they aren't using the opportunity to elevate the bike lanes though.

What makes a GOOD bikeway? Ranking Brisbane's bike routes

Chris Cox

QuoteJoin me for a cycle tour through Brisbane starting in Toowong in the inner west, through the CBD, then head south to Nathan, and then west back to the Centenary Bikeway at Darra. But just taking a tour isn't fun, so I'm going to rank the bike routes based on a range of criteria and whack them in a Tier list.

The criteria I used were, in order of weighting:
1. Level of Traffic Stress (1-4 lower the better) - weighting: 20
2. Comfort - shade, gradients, wayfinding etc (1-5, higher the better). W: 10
3. Connections - what destinations and intersecting routes are along the way? (1-5). W: 10
4. Crossings - are they prioritised? Do you have to wait an eternity at lights? (1-5). W: 7
5. Upgrades - are there any upgrades vaguely planned, funded or under construction? (1-3). W: 3
Overall scores out of 50.

Depending how this goes, I might add to this tier list with future bikeway tours.

Excellent video this.
