SEQ: Is the bus ontime?

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport passengers has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Transport that the real time trial for buses will be expanded to include the City Glider bus route (1).

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"A trial of a real time bus information system on Logan Buses was first announced by the former Minister for Transport in March 2011 (2).  The trial has now been expanded to include the high patronage City Glider bus route."

"Real time bus information systems allow users to access an online system using smart mobile  devices to find out the real time that a bus will arriving at their stop. The buses constantly communicate with the real time system via onboard GPS. It also allows real time passenger information displays at major bus stops and onboard bus indicators of the next stop.  The present bus passenger information displays are not generally real time and don't respond to the frequent delays that buses may encounter due to road congestion and the like. The system will be very valuable for passengers at isolated bus stops waiting for their bus, they will be able to quickly check that is on the way in real time."

"The system selected for the trial is a good one in our opinion.  It is in use throughout a number of locations in the world.  Translink Vancouver Canada is already using the same system, and an appreciation of the improved functionality for bus passengers can be gained by visiting their mobile 'Next Bus' web site (3)"

"Road congestion is terminal in south-east Queensland unless we step up public transport use.  A real time bus information system is  important in making public transport a much more attractive option."
