Quote from: #Metro on November 18, 2024, 11:13:24 AMRail maintenance needs to be done during those hours and crowding can be dealt with by adding more services.

What I like about the Sydney night bus is it runs every weekday as well.

I've always thought some core bus routes (555, 333, 222, 444 short to Indooroopilly) should run 24 hours.

Maintenance can be done Sunday-Thursday nights. I understand that sometimes entire lines need to be closed for a weekend for trackwork, and that's a different issue. Trains should generally run late Friday/Saturday nights (i.e. Saturday/Sunday early a.m.

Running more buses also doesn't solve the time issue. Town Hall to Kingswood is 1:01 by T1 train, 1:39 by N70 bus. That's more than 50% extra travel time.

I don't disagree, but where do we get extra drivers, security guards etc from? Hard enough to fill vacancies now, I can't imagine you'll find too many people who want to drive buses full of drunks around at 3 am.

Sydney Morning Herald --> Rail workers given ultimatum to drop demands for 24-hour services $

QuoteThe NSW government is demanding the main rail union remove a work ban that requires 24-hour train services and another that reduces staff availability, raising the risk of severe disruptions or a shutdown of Sydney's passenger rail network.

News.com.au --> Sydney train strike has been called off following negotiations between NSW government and unions

QuoteA threatened strike that would have shut down Sydney's train network from Friday has been called off, following a breakthrough in negotiations over a new pay deal.

The key players met again on Thursday in a last-ditch effort to stop the shutdown that had been due to start at 4.15am on Friday and last till mid-morning on Sunday, disrupting the plans of millions of Sydneysiders.

The Premier, key ministers, bureaucrats and representatives of five unions sat down on Thursday afternoon to try and avoid what would be some of the most disruptive industrial actions in NSW for decades.

Premier Chris Minns said the government had agreed to one of the unions' key demands to run trains for 24 hours on the weekend.

The interim agreement would be effective for the next two weeks while "intensive bargaining" began to finalise the enterprise agreement that has been under negotiation for months. ...
