QuoteA PUBLIC transport guru will oversee the development and renewal of Adelaide's suburbs.

Premier Jay Weatherill today announced former Thinker in Residence Fred Hansen will head the state's Urban Renewal Authority.

Mr Hansen was heavily involved with transport-oriented developments in Portland, Oregon, a US city regarded as a world leader in public transport.

The Urban Renewal Authority will be responsible for the Bowden development, the Port Adelaide Waterfront overhaul and projects such as Woodville West on the Grange train line.

It will bring together agencies responsible for land and housing development, including the Land Management Corporation, Defence SA and Housing SA.

"Mr Hansen is recognised as a world leader in current thinking about transport and planning. He has lectured and participated on panels throughout the US and around the world," Mr Weatherill said.

"He has carried the message that land use and transportation must be fully integrated if we are to address the mobility needs of our communities in an era of global climate change."

Mr Weatherill said there were 26 "quality applicants for this job".

He made the announcement at the launch of the Property Council of Australia's City of Lights policy paper, which delivers a suite of policy proposals to make the CBD more vibrant.

"We also know that there is much more to be done. We know that there is a perception that there are shortcomings in employment opportunities, which is an issue that goes beyond the city centre and in that sense of vibrancy that we are urgently seeking to build," Mr Weatherill said.

"If we handle things properly, the emerging mining boom, and the fostering and development of our advanced manufacturing sector, and our clean-energy sector, will generate more and more employment opportunities including in the central business district - for head offices and similar functions for contemporary industry."

Why would anyone want to build near Adelaide train stations? The frequency is so bad, it's just not worth it!

Answer - there is usually plenty of undeveloped land.  Adelaide's railways have always been very industrial, and now most of the industry has vanished.  Plus better services are coming.

For now ...

Apparently they intend running services to justify the investment in concrete & overhead wires.

Actually, there's probably more 4 tph fulltime service in Adelaide than in Brisbane already.

What, so the electrification project and the shift to 15 min services from 2013 counts for nothing does it?

I mean really TT, the frequency upgrade for Adelaide is common knowledge, and we have referenced that in a few media releases...Quite frankly you should have known better than to post what you did.

So, actually, I would want to build near the stations. Land would be cheap because the network wouldn't be as valued to be near at the moment. But, by the time you actually get something built, this whiz bang high frequency rail network will be up and running, hence the property value of whatever you just built will go up suddenly. $$$

Only on one line in Adelaide for now, and even then not all stations on that line has 15 min service.  It's skip-stop.

If it were *that* amazing, you wouldn't need a government department trying to shove the concept...
Same problem over here - full of hype, nothing to show for it...

My second criticism is that it is FREQUENCY and SPAN that matter. In that case we should also be able to get TOD next to BUZ corridors and the CityCat as well.

Its not so much trying to 'shove it', its more making sure key parcels of land get developed properly, rather than having someone come along and shove a Bunnings there because they can afford the land more than a residential developer or whatever....The Govt is trying to ensure the social good is met.

Whats your problem? So 15 min trains are godlike in Perth, but not good enough for Adelaide?
