Just went to Nearmap and hit a paywall.

They now want $49/month for an individual user to access the service, or $99/month for full high resolution access and history beyond 12 months.

Back to Google Maps for all of us ...

Still have access through uni  :hg

I think there's a monthly limit of "free" access. I have access through my workplace though.

May have spoken too soon. Looks like they have changed the homepage to push the paid products, but the free maps (under Creative Commons license) are still there but somewhat hard to navigate to.

If you go direct to the sign-in page it still works:

I don't have any problem using Nearmap.. Have it hotlinked to my favorites toolbar.

Yeah, I jumped the gun on that one. The old free sign-in page still works, but if you go straight to the homepage you get hit for a subscription with no link to indicate that free use is still possible.  Just book mark the following link & you'll be fine:

Notice on NearMap this morning:

QuoteIntroducing PhotoMaps™ Standard

We are pleased to announce the introduction of nearmap PhotoMaps™ Standard packages for small to medium businesses. Single-user PhotoMaps licenses will be available for purchase directly on our new website which launches towards the end of this month. Group licenses are available now, please contact customer.service@nearmap.com for more information.

Free access to end

Coinciding with the launch of the new website and entry level commercial packages, free access to PhotoMaps will be coming to an end. The exact end date will be announced in the near future. We hope you have enjoyed the opportunity to use nearmap PhotoMaps free of charge.

Alas, Colin, your backdoor link to Nearmap no longer works -- you now come up against the paywall.

Set in train

One can only hope they burn through their cash reserves and are forced to sell to a buyer that will continue the service and realise the best business model is an advertiser supported structure.

I still have access through my uni's VPN, I would assume they paid for access (getting 40,000 licenses at the rate Nearmap were asking for would have been expensive as heck...  :o)

Nah, they probably did the same as how UQ did licences for Australian Standards online. They have 3 licences for that for the whole uni.
There is no silver bullet... but there is silver buckshot.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

A considerable loss to the enthusiast community, I for one was a regular user and would if it was a reasonable subscription rate continue to use this facility.
Not a big market but a private non commercial subscription of say $40 per year over some 1000 private users is money that Nearmap's management has now forgone.
Have attempted to contact Nearmap but no response to Email to this time.
