ABC News --> At 14 years of age, Jeep the military service dog was up bright and early on Anzac Day

QuoteAmong the many thousands across the country who rose early on Monday morning to take part in Anzac Day dawn services was a 14-year-old Belgian shepherd named Jeep.

Jeep's partner in service, Lauren Marshall, stirred the ageing dog from warm blankets to make the journey into Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance for the first full-scale service since COVID began.

Before leaving, she pinned onto Jeep's coat a medal the dog earned for years of service in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), as well as a purple poppy to honour the many thousands of animals that have died in military service.

"It was extremely important to come down here," she said.

"Jeep is approaching the end of his life." ...

New round of funding to remember Queensland veterans
18th August 2022

Premier and Minister for the Olympics
The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk

The Palaszczuk Government has launched the second round of the $4 million Queensland Remembers Grants Program, helping ex-service and other not-for-profit organisations to honour Queensland veterans and their families.

The Premier made the announcement in Parliament on Vietnam Veterans' Day, a day to remember the sacrifices of those who died and show our respect and thanks to the many Australians who served during our involvement in the Vietnam War.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the program would assist organisations to develop or upgrade infrastructure, while allowing Government to invest in new projects and events which recognise the broad contribution of veterans.

"Queenslanders continue to demonstrate their commitment to honouring our veterans and sharing their stories – always turning out in enormous numbers for Anzac Day, Remembrance Day and other commemorative events throughout the year," the Premier said.

"This year, Queenslanders have also acknowledged a number of significant anniversaries of the Second World War – including the 80th anniversaries of the bombing of Darwin, the fall of Singapore and the Battle of the Coral Sea.

"The Queensland Remembers Grants Program is an important part of the Queensland Government's efforts to ensure we appropriately honour the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who have served this country.

"By partnering with ex-service and not-for-profit organisations to fund key projects, upgrades, and events, we can continue to provide more support and recognition for our veterans."

The program supports grants for the delivery of minor capital works such as repairs, maintenance or the purchase of equipment up to $50,000 per grant, as well as major capital works – including internal building refurbishments and accessibility upgrades – between $50,000 and $250,000 per grant.

Community grants up to $50,000 per grant are also provided, to assist eligible organisations with commemorative activities, events or projects such as the creation of new memorials, memorial gardens and avenues of honour.

In its first round, the Queensland Remembers Grants Program supported 25 recipients across the State, including funding to create a new War Memorial Park at Murgon, to upgrade the existing Roma Cenotaph and to restore buildings at the National Service Heritage Precinct in Wacol.

Assistant Minister to the Premier for Veterans' Affairs Bart Mellish said the Queensland Remembers Grants Program builds on the Palaszczuk Government's extensive investment in the veteran community.

"Honouring veterans, recognising their extraordinary contributions, and ensuring the continued health and wellbeing of veterans and their families is important, ongoing work," Mr Mellish said.

"Through the Office for Veterans, the Palaszczuk Government also provides support for ex-service organisations and ex-Australian Defence Force members – including a free TAFE training program, access to legal and employment support services, and funding for welfare services."

The second round of the Queensland Remembers Grants Program is now open for submissions and will close at 5pm on 4 October 2022.

Successful recipients under round two of the Queensland Remembers Grants Program are expected to be announced in March 2023.

Permanent reminder of Queensland War Widows contribution

19th October 2022

Premier and Minister for the Olympics
The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk

Future generations of students and the public will have a lasting testimonial to the remarkable contribution of Australian War Widows Queensland.

Hosting a War Widows' Day lunch in Brisbane, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk paid tribute to the spouses of fallen Queensland veterans.

"Last year, I was proud to confirm that Queensland would be the first state to formally hold War Widows' Day each year on the 19th of October," the Premier said.

"The day is the birthday of Jessie Vasey OBE CBE, the Roma-born trailblazer who founded the War Widows Guild in 1947.

"To further recognise the organisation's important work, today I can announce that the State Library of Queensland will be working with the Vasey family to capture the foundation story.

"My government will contribute $10,000 to create an oral history of Jessie's achievements, for the State Library's website and the Anzac Square Memorial Galleries.

"It will also be included in the Library's school curriculum, so students today, and into the future, can learn, appreciate and celebrate Jessie's work."

"What started as a craft guild for other widows in Toowoomba grew into a national movement, which 75 years on is known as Australian War Widows.

"And today, they serve a community of widows and widowers nationwide. Australian War Widows Queensland protects the interests, welfare and wellbeing of its 2000 members and more than 10,000 war widows and widowers across the state."

Also to commemorate War Widows' Day, Queensland landmarks including Parliament House and Brisbane's Story Bridge will be illuminated this evening in blue and white light – the colours of Australian War Widows.

"When Queenslanders see these landmarks tonight, I hope they'll reflect on the lives of our war widows and widowers, as well as the contribution of Australian War Widows Queensland," the Premier said.

"I commend Australian War Widows Queensland on 75 years of outstanding service.

"With honour, friendship, support and advocacy, they have touched countless lives – extending a helping hand through grief, and on life's great journey."

Assistant Minister to the Premier for Veterans' Affairs Bart Mellish said War Widows' Day was also an opportunity to raise awareness of the support available to the families of current and former Australian Defence Force members.

"Australian War Widows Queensland offers a range of services to its members – providing temporary and long-term accommodation, arranging counselling and home visits, and liaising with the Department of Veterans' Affairs on behalf of their members," Mr Mellish said.

"The Queensland Government has proudly supported the work of Australian War Widows Queensland, providing funding for member functions, welfare staff and financial support through the Anzac Day Trust Grants Program.

"And through our dedicated Office for Veterans, we provide broader support to Queensland veterans and their families – with funding for legal assistance, housing, training and employment.

"Working alongside veterans, their families, and long-standing organisations like Australian War Widows Queensland, we hope to foster a more caring, inclusive and respectful State."

Mrs Jenny Gregory, State President of Australian War Widows Queensland said the inaugural War Widows Day marked a significant milestone for the organisation.

"We are delighted that the Queensland Government continues to recognise the important work of Australian War Widows Queensland and has formally dedicated 19 October each year to recognise loved ones left behind by those who have served Australia," Mrs Gregory said.

^ photographs at Gallipoli I think were taken by Captain/Major Alexander (Alec) Marks - Medical Officer AAMC (Australian Army Medical Corps). He was promoted to Major in 1915 at Gallipoli.

The Marks Family were well known in Brisbane with medical connections both Military and Civilian.

Fascinating history by State Library of Queensland.

Veterans honoured on Remembrance Day

11th November 2023

JOINT STATEMENT

Acting Premier and Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games
The Honourable Dr Steven Miles

Assistant Minister to the Premier for Veterans' Affairs and the Public Sector
Mr Bart Mellish

. Queensland State War Memorial is the focus of Remembrance Day

. Queensland Veterans' Council now responsible for Anzac Square

. Queensland Government committed to supporting veterans

Acting Premier Steven Miles will lay a wreath at Anzac Square in Brisbane today to pay tribute to Australians who have served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping missions.

Remembrance Day also honours the Australian Defence Force personnel who are still affected by the impacts of their service.

The Shrine of Remembrance and Eternal Flame at Anzac Square is the principal Remembrance Day site for many Queenslanders.  Additionally, hundreds of events will be help around Queensland to mark the day.

This is the first Remembrance Day for which Anzac Square and the three Anzac Square Memorial Galleries beneath the parklands are the responsibility of the Queensland Veterans' Council.

After 90 years in the care of Brisbane City Council, responsibility was transferred to the Queensland Veterans' Council (QVC) earlier this month.

The QVC, established as a statutory body in 2021, provides advice to the Queensland Government on veterans' matters and administers the Anzac Day Trust Fund which supports veterans.

The state government provides a range of supports for veterans including housing assistance, health care, education and training, and commemoration and recognition.

In 2020, the Queensland Government committed an additional $10 million over four years to enhance veterans' support and to deliver initiatives to recognise and support veterans and their families.

It committed a further $1.9 million through the 2023-24 State Budget.

Quotes attributable to Acting Premier Steven Miles:

"Remembrance Day is an opportunity to honour the fallen and thank the veterans who gave so much to Australia.

"Queenslanders around the state will pay tribute to our servicemen and women at local events, because we are proud of our long history of service to protect our freedoms.

"The Palaszczuk Government is committed to supporting our veterans, so they have an improved life today and into the future."

Quote attributable to Assistant Minister to the Premier for Veterans' Affairs and the Public Sector Bart Mellish:

"Remembrance Day is an important occasion for millions of Queenslanders as we honour those who served and sacrificed for Australia.

"The Queensland Government support for our veterans, through a range of programs and initiatives, emphasises the importance we place on their welfare."

Further Background

The First World War cessation of hostilities on the Western Front took effect at 11am on 11 November 1918.
More than 57,000 Queensland soldiers enlisted in the First World War.
Almost twice that number of Queenslanders enlisted in the Second World War.
The Governor of Queensland Sir John Goodwin lit Australia's first Eternal Flame at the site on Armistice Day - as Remembrance Day on 11 November was then known – in 1930.
Brisbane City Council assumed responsibility for its care in 1933.
Today, Anzac Square is dedicated to the men and women who have served this country in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping missions since the 1899 Boer War.

Quote... Australia's Defence Honours and Awards Appeal Tribunal has recommended, in a long finding published on Tuesday, that both Warrant Officer Kevin "Dasher" Wheatley and his mate, Warrant Officer Ron "Butch" Swanton, who died together in 1965, should be both honoured posthumously with the Medal for Gallantry for actions, long overlooked, they took during the Vietnam War. ...
