BRISBANE has been recognised as one of the most liveable cities in the world, coming in for a special mention among finalists of the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize in Singapore yesterday.

While New York was awarded the overall prize, judges recognised the Queensland capital for its urban design, good governance and innovation in listing it among a shortlist of seven finalists for the award.

Brisbane was the only Australian city on the shortlist from a field of 62 nominated cities and impressed international judges during their visit in October.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the recognition was proof Brisbane was a vibrant city where "people can work, live and play".

"To be named a finalist alongside cities like Copenhagen in Denmark and Vancouver goes to show that Brisbane's international reputation is growing," Cr Quirk said yesterday.

"We are well on our way to becoming Australia's new World City."

Over the past 20 years, $8.75 billion has been directly invested into Brisbane's inner city, resulting in 14ha of new parkland and an extra 4.5km in public access to the Brisbane River.

In claiming the overall prize in the biennial awards, New York was recognised as an inspiring story of urban rejuvenation following the September 11 terror attacks more than a decade ago.

The other cities on the shortlist of seven finalists were Ahmedabad in India, Copenhagen, Malmo in Sweden, Vancouver and the fast-growing South African township of Khayelitsha.

I think it shows we could consistently be on the top if our transport systems actually worked.  We outperform in so many other ways, and have the advantage of a fantastic climate and natural resources (above and below the ground), that good public transport would see us put those bloody Scandinavians in their place for good!  ;D

YES, Brisbane can be a great place to call home....if only many of our PT timetables reflected the fact it's nolonger 1981.....(or is '71 more accurate)....

SEQ, where our only "fast-track" is in becoming the rail embarrassment of Australia!   :frs:
