I've been reading the above blog over the last few days.  Seems quite good actually.

This graph is generally relevant enough, and interesting enough to poach:


The above graph shows what I think too - if you don't reduce car ownership you aren't realising the potential of PT.

Unfortunately Litman is engaging in cost-only analysis.

Clearly if 80% of people travel by car, it is better than PT, despite the high cost.

He needs to provide a corresponding break down of the benefits - travel time, convenience, etc.

Transport taxes – including fuel excise, registration, compulsory third party insurance and licensing – now cost the typical two-car Aussie family $2717 per year.

The latest Affordability Index from the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) found the cost of transport was going up markedly across all states and territories, in city and country areas.

The average Australian city household now pays $19,117 on annual transport costs, or 14.8 per cent of household income, the AAA found. ...

Brisbane families are also paying high prices for public transport, with the weekly average family spend of $56.52 more than $15 higher than the national figure. ...
