There does seem to be a constant stream of service disruptions on the network.  Some of these are beyond the control of the operator, such as ill passengers or crew, level crossing incidents and the like.

But there are around the clock track, power and signal faults. As well as mechanical failures of units.  (This is not confined to Queensland, Metro Melbourne has a similar performance history).

Peak performance figures are recorded here.  A lot disruption is occurring outside peaks as well though.

A lot of feedback of late is correlating high fares with failing reliability and people are moving to alternatives.  This is concerning.

The first thing to determine is do members here think there needs to be action, or is the level of disruption acceptable?

Political candidates are no doubt getting feedback from constituents and it will be interesting to see if this is raised during the election campaign.

Short answer, NO.

+1
I cannot recall in recent memory the multitude of delays, closures and downright major rail disasters we have experienced over the past 8 months, it's unprecedented, to use the Premier's own words.

Reliability going off rails with faults occurring six times a day on CityTrain network

FAULTS on the CityTrain network now occur six times a day despite extensive maintenance work which is disrupting travellers every weekend.

Figures obtained by The Courier-Mail show Queensland Rail recorded a 21 per cent increase in signalling, overhead and track issues last year, with at least six problems arising every day.

The biggest increase occurred in signalling faults which grew from 1474 in 2009-2010 to 1851 last financial year.

Track issues also jumped, from 277 to 329, but problems with overhead line equipment fell from 104 to 72.

Robert Dow, from the commuter advocacy group Back on Track, said six faults a day were too many.

"The level of track and signal faults is significant and does cause a lot of disruption around the block," Mr Dow said.

"We'd like to think that the incoming government would look at the reliability of the rail and bus networks, because it's not just confined to rail."

He said the move to a centralised signalling system seemed to have contributed to the greater number of daily issues on the CityTrain network.

"As soon as there's a minor hiccup with that communication pathway, everything stops until they resolve it," he said.

The way on-time performance data is collated disguises the problem. Disruptions such as boomgate collisions, police incidents and medical emergencies are not included in peak on-time data. And QR reported only on peak periods.

A QR spokesman said although network faults had increased "in raw terms", measured against increases in network size, the number of services and volume of freight carried, they had fallen.

This weekend, buses will replace trains between Northgate and North Gympie stations as work is carried out on overhead lines and tracks.

I hope that an incoming LMP govt will overhaul the whole PT system for SE Qld AND freeze the cost of fares too!

But they have already said they will increase at 7.5% per year.
