CARS could be banned from streets around the Cultural Centre or diverted via a new $200 million tunnel in a bid to fix South Bank's worst intersection.

The State Government has vowed to fix the deadly stretch of road between Victoria Bridge and the South Bank busway tunnel, where three pedestrians have died since 2004 and poor design had led to congestion and forced bus drivers to routinely run red lights.

A concept design report on options to fix the Cultural Centre precinct by consultants AECOM - released to mX under Right To Information laws - gives the Government five options from $6.5 million to $238.3 million for a permanent fix.

Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said each option would be considered.

"We know this issue needs to be addressed and that's why we are carrying out this investigation - I am not ruling anything in just as I am not ruling anything out," she said.

"The bottom line is we need better safety and we need better access for everyone commuters and motorists and cyclists alike - and those are the priorities that will be front and centre in identifying a solution."

The report's preferred option diverts all general traffic coming from Victoria Bridge away from the busway intersection, along the river to Peel St, making way for two new bus stations and pedestrian crossings.

The $51.1 million plan clears the intersection of cars, but forces cyclists on an indirect loop between the city and cultural institutions like QPAC.

Other options include returning to conventional traffic lanes on the Victoria Bridge to allow easier pedestrian access to the busway.

WHere's the RTI document... it's not listed on the TMR disclosure log (yet?)

Chances are the 6 million dollar option is the most affective but political suicide, shame really as I'm sure it would do the job as well as a 200 million dollar tunnel
"Where else but Queensland?"

It could go up on the Translink website, it would explain the two guys I saw in TL shirts watching the intersection from up on the pedestrian overpass a month or two ago. I know I posted up here about it. I have looked though and its not up there yet. I do expect an article in tomorrows CM which could have more detail though.

Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

The rti is still not available from either Translink or TMR. TMR says tis can't be published for the first 24hrs after the applicant has received the information, but after that it should be up asap, and no more than 5 business days after access. By that rule, tomorrow should be the last day they have to put it up.
