The South East Busway will be extended to Priestdale Rd, Rochedale, sooner than expected with the State Government fast-tracking $36 million in funding for the project.

Construction on the busway will begin this year as part of the $70 million extension of the Gateway Motorway southbound on-ramp to the Pacific Motorway.

Member for Springwood Barbara Stone said doing both projects at once made sense.

"Once completed, the extension will mean buses from Rochedale and Rochedale South can directly access the busway, without the need to use the Pacific or Gateway motorways,'' she said.

"This will save travel time for services in the area and provide more incentive for people to switch to the growing public transport network.''

Logan City councillor  Lisa Bradley (Div. 1) said, however, the busway would be more used if it extended to Springwood.

Cr Bradley said extending the busway to Priestdale Rd at Rochedale would create more buses on local roads and would not be welcomed by residents.

"I don't think it's gone far enough ... it really needs to go to Springwood,'' she said.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads have decided on an alignment for the busway from Rochedale to Springwood, but have not yet committed funding.

"Planning for a future extension to Springwood is currently under way and should be finished by the middle of this year,'' a department spokesman said.

"Timing of this work will be determined after this planning stage is finished."

Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...

How long has this been talked about?  I can remember receiving a flyer in the mail in 2006 IIRC.

My understanding is that they've always been clear that building was a fair way down the track, however they wanted to get the alignment and design through community consultation to protect it... which is entirely valid.

The councillor clearly has no idea what she is talking about.  The extension is only being done because it ties up with the Gateway ramp upgrades.  No new stations or access points, just a slightly longer merge for southbound buses with it being futureproofed for bi-di running once that becomes possible.
