In welcome news for hot and weary commuters, Brisbane City Council has announced its entire bus fleet is now air-conditioned.

The council's last bus without air conditioning was retired from service in the past 24 hours, with a replacement set to hit the city streets today.

Every one of more than 1110 council buses are now fitted with air-conditioning, with most units installed when the buses were built.

A total of 174 buses without air-conditioning were retro-fitted by council eight years ago but most old vehicles have been replaced with new ones.

Today, Public and Active Transport chairman Julian Simmonds trumpeted the progress.

"When our administration was elected just 37 per cent of buses were air-conditioned but our goal of making public transport more comfortable and appealing for residents has seen this number soar to the full 100 per cent," he said.

Cr Simmonds said more than 480 new buses has been rolled out in the past four years.

Council was on track to fulfil a 2008 election promise to have 500 buses delivered by March 2012.

Another reason to leave the car at home!

We have come a long way since 2004 when I caught "rusty metal boxes on wheels" with no air con, 1970s brown interior, pull string or press-panel instead of buttons, open windows and belching diesel fumes and noisy engine. Oh and they came half hourly!

The new buses are like heaven compared to that old cr*p!

I quite liked some of the non-air con buses, the air coming in was quite refreshing. Horrible to be in during summer, packed like sardines though.

My personal pick would be the "butterboxes" (the former CityXpress version).  Not a fan of the SL200s however.

SL200s were too bumpy and loud, butterboxes were just the right comfort on a nice cool day.

I hate how the AOA on new buses blocks the view.

Good on BCC none the less!
