I checked my vehicle costs over the 2011 calendar year from detailed financial records.
It's a 2.2L Holden Zafira (7 seater)

Fuel =                                     $1391.60 (this alone equates to 12.60 c/km)
Registration =                            $641.90
Comprehensive insurance =        $699.94
Maintenance and repair =          $3030.25 (included one-off $1588 for timing chain replacement)
                                               ------------
Total =                                     $5763.69

The vehicle travelled 11,048 km over that period.

Cost = 52.17 c/km for 6 passengers (car seats 7)
Therefore cost per person in 2011 was 8.70 c/km

Compare that to the public transport fares in 2012.
Go Card 2012 fare from Palmwoods = 13.20c/km

The above is why Public Transport is NOT used by families.

A family of 4 would still be better off with PT though.... Though yes larger families would be better off.
It should be noted if all the population was traveling 6 to a vehicle, we wouldn't have congestion!

Totally agree, you nailed, usually only one family member goes in a certain direction for work, so this holds weight. The TransLoot spin team have lost that one!

Would all 6 family members be going to the CBD each day though?

:-t for the calculations. Might do some for my area.

Edit:
I don't have calculations for how much the vehicle I use costs, but I can take costs for a similar vehicle from RACQ (here). My journey to work is 2.3km long and the bus goes the same route I would do by car:
Mazda 6 sedan (the actual car is a stationwagon, probably not much difference): $0.73/km -> $1.68/trip
Bus 196, concession 2 zone off peak: $1.44/trip, /2.3 = $0.62/km, not including waiting time

Interesting, I thought the car would be far cheaper than it actually is.
