Price of a return trip compared between states in 2012:
Distance1km|5km|15km|25km|40km|70km
SE Qld$4.88 - $9.00|$5.74 - $10.40|$6.80 - $12.40|$8.70 - $15.80|$10.60 - $19.20|$15.04 - $27.40
NSW Bus$3.36 - $4.20|$5.60 - $7.00|$7.20 - $9.00|<<|<<
NSW Train$4.60 - $6.80|$4.60 - $6.80|$5.80 - $8.40|$6.60 - $9.60|$8.80 - $12.80|$11.40 - $16.40
Melbourne$6.56 - $7.60|<<|$11.00 - $11.08|<<|<<|$13.40 - $19.00
Perth$2.70 - $5.20|$3.90 - $5.20|$5.70 - $7.60|$8.40 - $11.20|$9.30 - $13.60|$9.30 - $18.00
Adelaide$2.60 - $9.40|<<|<<|<<|<<|<<

In the above table, I compared the cheapest return journey (In Qld off peak go) to the most expensive (generally the cash fare).

It should be noted that NSW and Vic have periodical options which reduce the effective fares for many.

I think the above table shows that if the farebox recovery ratio is below par, which it is, that isn't because people aren't paying high enough fares.

EDIT: Clarified table

#Metro

PT has a number of different goals (or just different levels of neglect!), so different networks will have different portions of coverage vs patronage services. I think a lot of (most?) services in Brisbane run half hourly- I think it is safe to say these are 'coverage' services and the BUZ routes being patronage.

Negative people... have a problem for every solution. Posts are commentary and are not necessarily endorsed by RAIL Back on Track or its members.

What about Qconnect?
You tell me.

Is it even comparable or is it different region to region?
I don't really think it is comparable to the other capital city based fares I have listed.  So it's a side track.

SurfRail

Qconnect urban fares relate only to buses and are in areas of comparative disadvantage, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them a bit lower if you look into it.

Apparently they have all been increased in line with CPI for the coming year - http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Travel-and-transport/Qconnect/Urban-bus-services.aspx

IIRC, qconnect on North Stradbroke was $1.10 for a student for 1 zone. There were two or three zones on the island I think. I wasn't entirely sure why they were part of the go card area though. Though getting a continuation across the ferry might be a bit hard unless they met at both ends as the car/passenger ferry took roughly 45 minutes to cross.
There is no silver bullet... but there is silver buckshot.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
