Media Release 27th September 2006
Inland Railway Now

RAIL ? Back On Track (http://backontrack.org)   a web based community organisation for the promotion of rail throughout Australia has called for the immediate construction of the inland railway line to from Melbourne to Brisbane.

Robert Dow, on behalf of RAIL Back On Track said:

?Recent consultant reports have suggested a completion time line of 2019.  This is myopic and ignores the real needs of the Australian community to have a fast, safe inland corridor for freight and passengers.  Heavy long haul road transport is increasingly causing safety issues on the nation's  roads, has considerable environmental costs and will become prohibitively expensive as fuel and the real costs of road damage are called in.?

?The time is now for infrastructure projects to position the nation for future sustainable economic growth, and provide industry and community with sensible and affordable transport solutions.  Delays will just add further costs to this essential project if we wait till 2019 for completion.  As was demonstrated with the construction of the Darwin to Alice Springs railway line we can do it!?
