Guarantee you will find somebody in a decision-making chair at BCC or TMR who will reason thus:

1. Sitting in traffic wastes fuel and drives up demand for it.
2. Motorways fix traffic.
3. Motorways will make fuel cheaper.

Not helped when the prevailing attitude was summed up quite well by Rachel Nolan at the open forum last year:

"Well, you just need roads."

Out of interest, what was the context leading up to that quote?

Walking through the WBTNS if I recall correctly. This was the justification given when she reached the bit about motorway tunnels under Stafford.

Price of high octane fuel at my local servo hit $1.63 yesterday.  Price was jacked up for the school holidays.  So, maybe just possibly $2 for the Christmas holidays, if the $A keeps coming down.

At this rate its even going to be too expensive to run a mower. Just have to get a goat (although my wife says I am an old one ...)

Golliwog

I saw a hand push lawn mower the other day. Might be worth it now, it would leave less droppings than a goat.

Managed to find cheap fuel this morning at Capalaba Matilda.. Signed on at work and drove down to Wynnum for my first service. Found Matilda at Wynnum ( Corner House ) had cheap fuel, except no one could buy any.. Seems they got robbed not long before I passed, and when I passed again twenty minutes later, the place was full of cops !!

Couriermail --> Fuel price to hit three-year high

Quote... Already 40 per cent of service stations have upped their prices to 154.9 cents a litre - a jump of 17 to 18 cents.

RACQ spokesman Brodie Bott said the sudden price hike cut short the 12-day price cycle by four days catching many motorists out.

"We expect the rest of the fuel stations to put their prices up throughout the day, and ULP prices could be the highest since the onset of the global financial crisis three years ago," Mr Bott said.

The falling value of the Australian dollar was behind the latest price hike, he said.

At 7am on Thursday, the Aussie was trading at 96.54 US cents - up on yesterday's close of 95.50 US but down on a fortnight ago ...

Drivers warned that the days of cheap petrol are over

QuoteDrivers warned that the days of cheap petrol are over

DRIVERS have been warned the days of cheap fuel are over and they should brace for permanent pain at the pump.

The nation's petrol watchdog has cleared the local industry of gouging, including on public holidays, despite pocketing a combined $2.2 billion annual profit.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission commissioner Joe Dimasi concedes drivers are suspicious of rip-offs, but stands by the conclusions.

"We have scrutinised this to death," Mr Dimasi told the Herald Sun.

A major ACCC report released yesterday warns that growing global demand for oil, more expensive supply and a potential global price on carbon means steep costs are a "new reality".

The appreciating Australian dollar spared motorists from a record high average of $1.70 a litre in May. This would have been the retail price had the Aussie dollar been US86c. Instead, the price reached $1.47c.

"The era of cheap oil and, therefore, cheap petrol and diesel, appears over," the report declares.

The ACCC found no evidence of excessive profits by refiners, wholesalers or retailers, but it plans to "closely watch" for any illegal price cycle collusion in Melbourne and other capital cities, in a move welcomed by the RACV.

"The ACCC remains concerned about the level of co-ordination apparent in the price cycles and is analysing the likely effects of this behaviour on outcomes for consumers," the report states.

But angry drivers accused the watchdog of being "toothless" and a "joke".

CommSec economists recently queried whether falls in the wholesale price were fully passed on at the bowser. The ACCC report found unleaded fuel was about 8c a litre more in 2010-11, compared with a year earlier.

This matched movements in the Singapore international benchmark and reflected global factors, including Middle East political unrest and a strong Asian economy.

Petrol companies earned about 2.2c a litre profit for all petrol products and 1.2c for regular unleaded.

Mr Dimasi said: "The people making the big profits are the guys that own the oil."

Australian prices were among the lowest in the OECD, only behind Mexico, the US and Canada.

Don't you just love human denial and delusion. They actually believe that they have some heavenly ordained right to cheap petrol.

That's said, OPEC IS a cartel and supposedly there to keep prices high.

On the other hand, why should OPEC sell its oil just for the price of digging it up and some taxes, like we do?

It's not like most of the OPEC countries have highly diversified economies...

Not sure what difference that makes.

Don't want to use fuel? Don't drive and don't live somewhere where you HAVE to drive, such as long distances.

And don't use the BS "I can't afford anywhere close to PT!!".

They have an interest in extorting as much money from the rest of the world as possible for the day when their oil runs out and they are back to selling dates, maybe solar energy if they are lucky.

I live near public transport.  Unfortunately my work isn't, as for many industrial areas in SEQ.  Apparently industrial estates don't deserve to have public transport.

I reckon this is why we need to really be pushing utility cycling like the Dutch do. Kids there regularly cycle 20km to school.
And aside from the odd big truck to avoid, traffic can often be light in industrial estates.
Not trying to generalise either, but some manual jobs in these areas have you sweating it out anyway, so it could even avoid the need to have to shower and get changed at work.

achiruel

Unfortunately it's a little far for me to cycle to work either.  If I could take my bike on the train I could do it, but I wouldn't be allowed in the afternoon as I'd be travelling in peak direction (morning would be ok 'cause I'd be on the first service for the morning.  I guess I could just try getting a bicycle locker at my destination station, as the trip from home to the station is an easy walk so I don't really need it at this end.

Of course the other issue is that I currently car pool with a 64year old with bad knees, I don't think she'd make the 6km cycle.

HappyTrainGuy

Better start resurfacing some roads then  ;D

If this was an article on the stock market it would highlight that the long-term growth was an significant % and celebrated as a sign of economic prosperity. For petrol it is seen as a short term peak that will 'surely' decline in the long term.  Talk about cultural bias!
