TRAINS are running to Melbourne's two newest railway stations.

The first passengers arrived yesterday at the multi-million-dollar Epping and Thomastown stops after completion of the duplicated track between Keon Park and Epping.

Transport Minister Terry Mulder officially opened the new sections of track and station buildings yesterday.

They are part of the $640 million South Morang Rail Extension Project, which also includes a 3.5km double track extension from Epping to South Morang due to open next year.

Mr Mulder said commuters would notice a marked improvement in performance on the Epping line.

"Anyone who has sat on a train at Keon Park, Lalor or Epping waiting for the single line section of track to clear ... will now see the benefits," he said.
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...
