Queensland Rail CEO to depart

24/11/2011

Queensland Rail Chief Executive Officer Paul Scurrah has resigned, effective 2 December, Chairman Stephen Gregg announced today.

Mr Gregg praised the significant work Mr Scurrah delivered as inaugural CEO of Queensland Rail and acknowledged the highly skilled and strongly motivated leadership team that will continue to deliver a safe, reliable and customer focused railway into the future.

"In conjunction with the Queensland Rail Board, Paul has led the Executive Team in delivering first class results for Queensland Rail Limited since the complex and challenging separation from QR Limited - the largest in Australian corporate history - through to the new vibrant, customer focused organisation we have today," Mr Gregg said.

"While this is a loss to our organisation, the Board would like to publicly acknowledge Paul's stewardship in putting in place the corporate structure, the leadership team and the focus on safety and customer service which will form the foundation for Queensland Rail's future success.

"Under Paul's leadership, Queensland Rail has been recognised widely for its performance, particularly in its customer service focus and delivery. Customer satisfaction has achieved an all time high rating and will continue to be the driving factor for Queensland Rail."

"It has been a pleasure to work with Paul and on behalf of the Queensland Rail Board, I wish him every success for the future."

Mr Gregg said that an executive recruitment process was already underway for a replacement. In the meantime, Chief Financial officer, Jim Benstead will assume the role of Acting Chief Executive Officer.

"Jim is a highly experienced executive who has played a key role in our leadership since the Company's inception," said Mr Gregg.

"He is supported by an outstanding executive leadership team and has a talented and committed workforce."

The Chairman said that appropriate protocols were already in place to assure probity during the leadership transition.

Thanks go to Mr Scurrah for making QR what it is today.
I wish him well in his future endeavours.

He has made QR a great example of what consultation and customer service is all about.
Well done.

Queensland Rail chief executive Paul Scurrah quits to work for QR National

QUEENSLAND Rail's chief executive has quit to go and work for the now privatised rail freight operator QR National.

Paul Scurrah announced his decision yesterday as QR National informed the Australian Stock Exchange of his appointment.

QR's chief financial officer Jim Benstead will act as chief executive officer until a replacement is found.

Queensland Rail chairman Stephen Gregg said Mr Scurrah's last day would be next Friday.

"While this is a loss to our organisation, the board would like to publicly acknowledge Paul's stewardship in putting in place the corporate structure, the leadership and the focus on safety and customer service which will form the foundation for QR's future success," Mr Gregg said.

He is the second government head to quit in recent weeks - perhaps an acknowledgement that Premier Anna Bligh will be hard-pressed to retain government at the coming election.

Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation director-general Ian Fletcher said earlier this month that he would finish up in January.

He is understood to be taking a job in New Zealand.

QR National chief executive Lance Hockridge told the AusRAIL conference in Brisbane yesterday Mr Scurrah would take up the role of executive vice-president commercial and marketing.

His job is one of several new executive appointments QR National announced yesterday ahead of an overhaul of its internal structure.

QR National shares, which were issued to retail investors last year at $2.45, closed at $3.33 yesterday, down 3 cents.

You know I would get fed up as well. Am I the CEO or not. I really doubt these two get to make many decisions without it going through the minister.
"Where else but Queensland?"

The loss of Mr Scurrah from Queensland Rail is a loss to all who use rail public transport, his efforts to change the culture and staff attitudes to be more service oriented have been fruitfull and appreciated by most, and there is little doubt that QRN will benefit from both his experience and personal approach.
