Affordable ticket prices unveiled for GC2018

Spectators can look forward to affordable ticket prices for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games following the announcement of ticket pricing today.

Up to 1.5 million spectators are expected to enjoy more than 11 unforgettable days of world class sporting competition from April 4-15.

Adult tickets to high profile events such as athletics will start from as low as $20 and half price children's tickets will be available from $10.

The ticket price includes all ticket fees and free public transport on event day within the South East Queensland TransLink public transport network, the Cairns TransLink bus network and on the Townsville qconnect bus network when a valid event ticket is presented.

Tickets for people with accessibility requirements will be available for all events.

As GC2018 is affiliated to the Queensland Companion Card program, accessible seating will be provided with a complimentary companion ticket.

Tickets will initially be made available to the public via a Ticket Request phase which starts in April 2017. The Ticket Request phase will allow people to request tickets in a fair and equitable manner.

Other highlights of the GC2018 Ticket Pricing Program include:

-      80 per cent of all tickets will be priced $80 or below

-      55 per cent of all tickets will be priced $40 or below

-      Opening Ceremony tickets will be available from $100 for adults and $50 for children

-      Closing Ceremony tickets from $70 for adults and $35 for children

-      Athletics tickets will be available from $20 for adults and $10 for children

-      Rugby 7s tickets will be available from $30 for adults and $15 for children

-      Infants under 2 years are granted free entry to all events providing they do not occupy a seat.

GC2018 will feature 18 sports, including the first ever presentation of Beach Volleyball at a Commonwealth Games, and the largest integrated para-sport program ever.

The Gold Coast will welcome 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 nations and territories across the Commonwealth - representing more than one third of the world's population.

Premier of Queensland the Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk MP:

"The Queensland Government is firmly committed to ensuring GC2018 is affordable and accessible for everyone.

"That's why adult tickets to high profile events like athletics start from as low as $20 with half price children's tickets available from $10.

"GC2018 will be affordable for families and that means more people can share in what is sure to be a terrific experience.

"The action has a strong focus on the Gold Coast but it's important to remember that some events will be hosted in Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville. This means the benefits and excitement of the Games are sure to spread far and wide."

Minister for the Commonwealth Games the Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe MP:

"GC2018 will be one of the biggest events ever staged in Queensland so it's important that families and people of all ages are given the best opportunity to experience the excitement of the Commonwealth Games.

"Families will have access to half price children's tickets and adult tickets have been made affordable right across the board in order to encourage involvement from people of all ages in our community."

GOLDOC Chairman Peter Beattie AC:

"GOLDOC has worked with the industry and partners to deliver a world-class ticketing program.

"We want passionate fans in every seat, so the ticket prices are inclusive, accessible and affordable to make it easy for everyone to enjoy the Games.

"GC2018 is about the future generation and we want as many children as possible to experience the Commonwealth Games."

GOLDOC CEO Mark Peters:

"Having already announced the four free events for GC2018, we are proud to reveal these affordable ticket prices.

"It's fantastic that a family can purchase four tickets to attend a preliminary session of the athletics for as little as $60 and a finals session that includes the 100m for $180.

"In total, fans will have the opportunity to witness 280 sport sessions and more than 1000 hours of world class sporting competition over the course of the 11 days.

Former Australian champion swimmer and Gold Coast resident Samantha Riley:

"As a mother of three young boys, I understand how important affordability is for major events like GC2018 and I'm sure families will be really pleased by these ticket prices.

"I know that half price children's tickets will be well received and as a family we are really looking forward to attending the swimming at the new Gold Coast Aquatic Centre."

The Parenthood Executive Director Jo Briskey:

"We are pleased that children in particular have been a key consideration for GOLDOC and today's announcement that infants under 2 years of age will be granted free entry will be welcomed by families."

COTA (Council on the Ageing) Queensland Chief Executive Mark Tucker-Evans:

"We have been in discussions with GOLDOC about ticket pricing throughout this process and we are particularly pleased that tickets are competitively priced for people of all ages, and that the ticket includes free public transport.

"We see that as being a real benefit for older spectators wishing to attend events throughout the 11 days of GC2018."

QR is definitely the weak link at present.  The light rail will do admirably, as always.  The bus network should be fine also.

Team Turnbull go for gold in race to score cheap political points

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games are 492 days away, but the Prime Minister and his frontbench have kicked off the political games to push their legislative agenda.

"The Games should be above politics and it's irresponsible for Mr Turnbull and his team to talk down the Games to score cheap political points in Canberra," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"Mr Turnbull's op-ed today is a stunt – the $320 million Commonwealth Games infrastructure program is on track and on budget.

"It's now the second time a Federal Government Minister has blatantly sought to misled Australians about the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"To be very clear, we have fixed price contracts for all venues.

"Many of our Games venues have already been delivered including the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, the Soundstage, Broadbeach Bowls Club upgrade, Coomera Indoor Sports Centre and the Anna Meares State Velodrome.

"We're now in the final leg of the construction race, and all competition venues as part of the Government's $320 million venue construction program will be delivered 12 months ahead of the Games as promised.

"My message is clear - in 2018 we will have 1.5 billion  people watching the Gold Coast. We have an obligation to support the Games, not misled to score political points.

"The Palaszczuk Government is squarely behind the Commonwealth Games, cheering on the Gold Coast – not playing political games like Mr Turnbull."

Following the Trade Minister's comments on 21 November in Federal Parliament claiming Commonwealth Games venues were "at risk" Minister Hinchliffe wrote to the Turnbull Government and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to confirm the venues program is on track and on budget and Mr Ciobo's comments were not based on facts. The Turnbull Government had not acknowledged receipt of this letter.

Until last week's political stunt from Mr Ciobo the Federal Government has at no stage raised a concern about the Commonwealth Games as a funding partner.

Are those for-profit private contractors building the games venues?  :yikes:

Mr Hinchliffe has some wins - Gold Coast Light Rail and fare reforms.

Otherwise, he still hasn't opened the bus back door, the whole bus reform thing has fallen off the radar (haven't heard about the BCC-QLD

Gov alliance thing), he hasn't come out and said he will cancel next years QR bonuses, and on top of that is probably going to sign off carte

blanche Brisbane City Council's bus contract for 5 years without any requirement for bus reforms or any consideration of BCC's resistance

and behaviour to bus reform over many years.

Just on opening the bus back door, does he know that he is supposed to be doing that?

Have any members written to him about it?

I know we've done a media release but it may have been lost in the noise.

ozbob

All door boarding has been raised many times direct with Minister and Ministerial Staff.  It was also a component of feedback on the fare review stuff.

TransLink is risk adverse, more concerned with possible fare evasion than improving the network.

Other jurisdictions that have moved forward with all door boarding eg. San Francisco have not had problems with fare evasion, just better network performance.

This is Queensland.  It is an important factor ...

The Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe

GC2018 Volunteers: on your marks, ready, set...

The countdown is on - it's International Volunteer Day and Queenslanders are being asked to consider giving their time as a Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games volunteer.

Transport and Commonwealth Games Minister, Stirling Hinchliffe today announced applications for the Games' jobs of a lifetime would open on February 6, 2017 with volunteers also able to pre-register online.

"Queenslanders have a proud tradition of volunteering to support major events and there is none bigger in Australia this decade than the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast," Minister Hinchliffe said.

"The 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast will need 15,000 volunteers with diverse skills and life experiences for crucial roles at multiple locations including Games venues, the Games Village and the Uniform and Accreditation Centre.

"Recruiting volunteers is an important step in delivering the best ever Commonwealth Games, and it starts today – on International Volunteer Day.

"Volunteering for GC2018 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of a priceless legacy."

The contribution of volunteers has been crucial to the successful delivery of major events around the world and here in Queensland.

Specialist training for GC2018 will be provided by TAFE Queensland at no cost to Games volunteers.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Chairman, Peter Beattie AC, said volunteers will help make the Games great.

"The contribution of GC2018 volunteers will help promote the Gold Coast to athletes, officials and spectators who will attend the Games from across the Commonwealth.

"Volunteering at the Games provides so many people with an opportunity to share the dream, which has been at the heart of the event since the Commonwealth Games began."

GOLDOC Chief Executive Officer, Mark Peters said he had been privileged to attend many international sporting tournaments both as a player and official.

"Recently I have been involved in the Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast," Mr Peters said.

"A common denominator for a great tournament and lifelong memories is the incredible enthusiasm, friendliness and performance of the volunteers.

"I'd encourage as many people as possible to apply to be a volunteer as this is a great way for locals to shape the Games and promote the Gold Coast."

Mark Grant was among the first to pre-register his interest in becoming a GC2018 volunteer, ahead of the opening of applications on February 6, and has had plenty of experience in the job.

Mr Grant's impressive major event volunteer resume includes Brisbane's 1982 Commonwealth Games, the 2001 Goodwill Games, and the Sydney, Athens and London Olympics.

"From the opening ceremony, I was not only a volunteer but an ambassador for my country. I was engulfed by an overwhelming sense of pride," he said.

"It is a great opportunity to be involved in an event like no other."

Queenslanders can register their interest in becoming a GC2018 volunteer and keep up to date with the latest news on the volunteer program at: http://www.gc2018.com/volunteer

Sixth GC2018 CoCom Review

The Commonwealth Games Federation Coordination Commission's (CoCom) sixth meeting to review the progress of preparations for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) is under way.

It's part of a six-monthly review process to assess planning for GC2018 and ensure obligations under the Games' Host City Contract are being met.

The review, hosted at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Organising Corporation's (GOLDOC) Headquarters in Ashmore, involves an extensive program of workshops, briefings and meetings covering all aspects of planning and preparations for GC2018, including legacy, security and transport.

Each of the five CoCom reviews to date has endorsed progress and preparations for GC2018, and stated confidence in planning for the Games remaining on track and on budget.

In their last review, the CGF acknowledged a collaborative approach would be a key success factor for the Games.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) continues to work closely with the Queensland Government and all Games partners to ensure it delivers the best Commonwealth Games ever.

With 485 days to go, GC2018 is on time and on budget.

As part of the CoCom review, Transport and Commonwealth Games Minister, Stirling Hinchliffe will hold meetings with the CoCom Chair and CGF Vice-President Bruce Robertson, CGF President Louise Martin CBE, and Chief Executive of the CGF, David Grevemberg CBE.

The sixth CoCom review will conclude on Friday, December 9, 2016.

Commonwealth Games on Track for 2018

With 481 days to go until the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018), the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has delivered a glowing endorsement of Games preparations.

The regular review, which was delivered today as part of the sixth Coordination Commission (CoCom) on the Gold Coast, highlighted strengths in planning pace and organisational readiness, community engagement, security, legacy and progress of venue construction and quality.

Commonwealth Games Minister Stirling Hinchliffe welcomed the Commission's assessment that the Games remained on time and on budget.

"This latest report card from the CGF confirms once again that we are Games-ready," the Minister said.

"It is another vote of confidence from CoCom members and demonstrates the strong progress we've made since the last review in May 2016."

Minister Hinchliffe highlighted the importance of ongoing and continued collaboration between partners, including the CGF, Commonwealth Games Australia, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Organising Corporation (GOLDOC), City of Gold Coast, the Australian Government and Queensland Government.

"This type of cross-partner collaboration will ensure a great legacy for our city, our state and our country," Minister Hinchliffe said.

"I look forward to further close engagement with the CGF as we approach the critical final stages of Games preparations."

The CGF also recognised the work achieved by the Event Cities of Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville, and community benefits for these regions with the North Queensland cities hosting the preliminary basketball rounds for the Games.

Minister Hinchliffe said the $320 million Games venues program was on time and on budget, with all competition venues on track to be delivered at least 12 months ahead of the Games.

"In the past year I have opened several world-class facilities, including the $15.5 million Village Roadshow Sound Stage 9, $40 million Coomera Indoor Sports Centre and $59 million Anna Meares Velodrome," Minister Hinchliffe said.

"The Velodrome was described by CGF Vice President Bruce Robertson as an incredible investment in the community and the future of cycling in Queensland.

"Upgraded venues, including the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre and Broadbeach Bowls Club, are also complete."

"The Palaszczuk Government recognises the importance of continuity, commitment and the importance of collaboration between partners as we move towards the Games to ensure we deliver the best Commonwealth Games and an enduring legacy for our state."

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will run from 4 - 15 April 2018.

Australian Consortium to Deliver GC2018 Security

A consortium of four specialist Australian companies has been appointed by GOLDOC to provide the security workforce for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Comprising of MSS Security, Wilson Security, SecureCorp and SNP, the consortium will deploy more than 4,000 security personnel.

Transport and Commonwealth Games Minister, Stirling Hinchliffe said 30 percent of the security workforce would be recruited from South East Queensland.

"The security workforce for the 2018 Commonwealth Games will be specially trained by GOLDOC and its partners to deliver a high-quality presence for the Games and new, industry recognised skills for hundreds of local workers," the Minister said.

"A significant consideration in planning for GC2018 has been the Games' legacy; it has been built into new and upgraded venue infrastructure, and now the workforce skills of hundreds of Queenslanders."

GOLDOC Chairman, Peter Beattie AC said the safety and security of spectators and athletes would be a priority for GC2018.

"This is a sporting event, it's also the largest event Australia will see this decade, and we're determined everybody will be able to enjoy the Commonwealth Games in a safe and friendly environment," Mr Beattie said.

"GOLDOC is working closely with Queensland's Department of Education and Training and industry experts to tailor the skills of the GC2018 security workforce to local needs."

GOLDOC Head of Security, Danny Baade said the security workforce would include both newly trained and experienced personnel.

"South East Queensland has delivered many large events in recent years, the G20 Summit is just one example," Mr Baade said.

"We'll be providing a visible presence for GC2018 which is similar to what you would expect to see at a major Australian airport, while complementing the work of other security agencies."

Most recruitment and training of security personnel will commence during 2017.

I have been provided with some information about the upcoming Helensvale bus facilities upgrade.

Assuming the concept plan is followed, the interchange will take up a rough rectangle located immediately to the south of the station entrance.  The area to the north will eventually become the kiss-and-ride / taxi area - will be used firstly as a temporary interchange, then to accommodate the Commonwealth Games shuttles, and then put into its ultimate form after the Games.

There will be 10 permanent bus bays and 5 layover bays with driver facilities in the new interchange.  The temporary interchange will have 6 bays, and that will be converted into 3 stands (5 + 2 + 2) for the games - so there could be up to 19 buses picking up at any one time during the Games.

GC2018: Team England train, play and stay in Brisbane

It's official. Team England will kick off its Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games campaign next year with a 10-day training camp in Brisbane.

Brisbane's confirmation as the training base for Team England was announced today by Minister for Transport and the Commonwealth Games, Stirling Hinchliffe, with Team England CEO Paul Blanchard, Chef de Mission Sarah Winckless and Operations Director Louise Bell.

"I am pleased to confirm Brisbane as the official pre-Commonwealth Games training city for Team England with an expected contingent of 600 athletes and officials," Minister Hinchliffe said.

"After topping the tally with 174 medals at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Team England has chosen Brisbane to acclimatise to local conditions and make its final preparations for GC2018.

"This is a world-class team with world-class venues to choose from across Brisbane to prepare for its 2018 Commonwealth Games campaign."

Brisbane was announced as the location of Team England's 10-day training camp after Commonwealth Games England representatives toured the new $59 million Anna Meares Velodrome with Minister Hinchliffe.

Anna Meares Velodrome is Queensland's first indoor facility with an international 250-metre timber cycling track.

Commonwealth Games England representatives have been in Queensland this week to inspect competition and training venues on the Gold Coast and Brisbane, and will visit basketball facilities in Townsville and Cairns this weekend.

$320 million has been invested in the delivery of 18 new and upgraded competition venues, which will be ready12 months before the Commonwealth Games begin.

Chief Executive Officer for Team England, Paul Blanchard said the visit was an important part of England's preparations for assembling its largest ever team for an overseas Commonwealth Games.

"The facilities are excellent," Mr Blanchard said.

"Commonwealth Games England is fully focused on creating the best possible performance environment for Team England athletes, coaches and support staff and we feel that this is more than achievable in Brisbane next year.

"These facilities will give Team England the best chance of delivering more success at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. We believe they will be the best prepared team to represent England at a Commonwealth Games."

Team England is the first visiting country to nominate Brisbane as its pre-Games training base.

Scotland, the Welsh athletics and swimming teams, and Niue have recently committed to training camps on the Sunshine Coast prior to their debut on the Gold Coast for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"The boost training camps will deliver for local economies and tourism are a good example of the legacy the Commonwealth Games is creating not just on the Gold Coast, not just in Brisbane, but around Queensland," Minister Hinchliffe said.

"GC2018 is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to showcase Queensland to 70 Commonwealth nations and I know Team England's decision to train, play and stay in Brisbane will not only ignite the Games' spirit locally, but also light the fuse on the Australia versus England rivalry we know so well.

"It's the very essence of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games."

Brisbane will host the 2018 Commonwealth Games' track cycling and shooting competitions and join Townsville and Cairns as one of three GC2018 event cities.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will run from 4 - 15 April 2018.

Brisbanetimes --> The Commonwealth Games train promise from QR to Peter Beattie

QuoteQueensland Rail and the Transport Minister have personally reassured former Queensland premier Peter Beattie about train services for the Commonwealth Games, he says.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games organising committee chairman said public transport was one of the toughest challenges facing organisers, 14 months out.

The Premier meets the head of an inquiry into Queensland Rail on Friday to determine what went wrong and if anyone else should be sacked. Nine News

"I worry about everything. I'm just a worrier really," Mr Beattie said on Sunday when asked whether he was concerned about QR's reliability.

"Because at the end the buck stops with the organising committee I chair."

While light rail and buses play a huge role in moving 1.5 million expected spectators around on the Gold Coast itself, heavy rail will be the main option for transport from Brisbane, according to the Games transport draft plan.

The draft states the already major rail link will see extra services operating during peak periods throughout the Games.

The rail line will be duplicated from Coomera to Helensvale, where the service would connect with light rail.

Mr Beattie said services could double, from three to six an hour, and he was confident the added trips would be enough and there would be drivers to staff them.

"I've been assured by QR, well the acting CEO of QR gave me an assurance, directly and personally and to the board and the minister's done the same that there will be sufficient drivers and I trust that assurance," he said.

The addition of many more services through the opening of the Moreton Bay Rail Link in October led to massive strain and cancellations across the network thanks to a driver shortage.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and senior government figures were studying a report into the failure over the weekend before cabinet on Monday.

A spokesman for the Premier's office did not want to comment beyond saying the report was under consideration.

Six trains per hour - a train every ten minutes. How is that going to work? Is it both ways?

Six per hour is done in the morning between 6 am - 7 pm, and again in the afternoon (five) between 5 pm - 6 pm, but these are unidirectional.

Very easily done. #railfail should be all over by then (with the initial 100 drivers as well as the additional 100 drivers all online), and with the duplicated Coomera - Helensvale section, the only constraint is the Beenleigh line section. I would expect to see some GC trains either run all stops, or Beenleigh line trains reduced - particularly Kuraby - Beenleigh where the line goes back to two tracks.

As a side note, the Comm Games occurs during the school holidays, and no doubt much of the Coast will be in 'Games fever', so there's less of a need to provide a peak service.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Once the GC duplication is finished it is possible to run 4 tph on the current GC pattern with 4 TPH on the a kuraby all stops and 4tph GC express stopping at all stops south of kuraby.
Only problem is doing this requires use of the dual gauge.

God only knows how.  If a budirectionally signalled and fully duplicated railway can't turn back more than 8 trains per hour from a terminus with 2 platforms and an overrun track, there is no bloody hope for it.

QuoteNEARLY 60 per cent of the estimated 1000 buses and drivers needed for the Commonwealth Games will come from south east Queensland.

The Games LinQ consortium, which has links to Downer EDI and BMD Construction, has been granted the contract.

WCL Management Services, an international transport management company, led the tender process for GamesLinQ, giving the consortium the edge.

Company documents reveal WCL Management Services is registered as a company in Victoria but the business's website lists its head office as in Bundall.

A Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesman said GamesLinQ contract focused on local buses.

"GamesLinQ is committed to prioritising local bus operators as part of their procurement strategy and has committed to sourcing almost 60 per cent of the fleet and drivers for the shuttle bus task from south east Queensland, with the remainder to be sourced from other eastern states," he said.

"Their lead subcontractor is an international business that has been operating in Queensland for over 40 years and brings substantial expertise in tailoring transport for large-scale, international events."

Shuttle buses will be used to move more than 6600 athletes, 3000 media representatives and 1200 technical officers between venues and the athletes villages.

The bus contract has been split in two and WCL Management Services will be in charge of finalising bus routes and timetables for the Games shuttle services.

The successful applicant for the second stage, which includes bus fleet and workforce management, will be announced by the middle of the year.

GOLDOC chairman Peter Beattie said the target was to employ as many Queensland-based contractors as possible to ensure the economic boom from the Games stayed in the region.

"We have something like 87 per cent of these contracts going to Queenslanders," he said.

"We do everything we can to give Queenslanders a go and that's best for the Games."

Last week, Swiss watch brand Longines were announced as the Games' official time keeping, scoring and results partner.

I have grave fears for the rail network during the Commonwealth Games.  Will there be adequate service on lines other than the GC ?

To avert an international embarrassment, trains will be diverted from other lines, for sure.  Count on it.

Those double decker buses won't cut it either. If you are over 6"1 you can stand in them. Can the Government/Translink consider purchasing 10 modern hybrid articulated buses for use down there? They are a better mass transit solution.

Premier wants the Queen's Baton Relay kept free of politicians

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk does not want politicians basking in the reflected glory of carrying the Queens Baton across Queensland in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games.

"I don't want politicians signing up for the baton relay as just another chance to grandstand," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"I won't be applying to run and politicians at every level should follow my lead.

'These are the people's games, 'the friendly games'.

"We want our young people, our community legends, from all walks of life tasked as baton-bearers.

"Hundreds of Queenslanders will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of the lead-up to what is the biggest supporting event in a decade in Australia.

"I'll be out there cheering them on, with the thousands of others lining the baton-relay route.

"I intend nominating an extraordinary young achiever, 18 year old Kyle Ryan as my baton-bearer."

Kyle was recently recognised for the Highest Achievement by an Aboriginal of Torres Strait Islander Student at the Queensland Certificate of Education Achievement Awards.

After just an average first year at Glenala State High School, Kyle's grades improved so dramatically he earned an OP 1.

Now studying for a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) at the University of Queensland he has provisional entry to study medicine in 2021.

"Kyle is an engaging, intelligent young man who is a role model to both local school students in Inala and the wider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"He embodies the spirit of Queensland and will carry the baton containing the Queens Message which will be read out to officially open the Games with great pride."

Minister for the Commonwealth Games Kate Jones said the GC2018 Relay will be the longest and most accessible ever.

"It won't just pass through but the Baton will spend quality time in all the communities it visits," Ms Jones said.

"The Relay will be inclusive and accessible.

"From our remote and regional communities to our capital city and finally the Gold Coast, this is an event for all Queenslanders and one they can embrace and celebrate.

"It's a wonderful opportunity to showcase Queensland's history, culture, traditions, varied landscape and people to the world."

On Commonwealth Day, Monday 13 March, at Buckingham Palace, the Queen will place her message in the Baton and hand it to the first runner.

From London, the Baton will travel to all Commonwealth nations and territories for 288 days before arriving in Australia.

Festival set to WOW Queenslanders for GC2018

Women from across the Commonwealth will unite ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games for an uplifting festival celebrating the achievements of women and girls.

Premier and Minister for the Arts Annastacia Palaszczuk was today joined by Artistic Director of London's Southbank Centre and WOW creator Jude Kelly to announce her government's support for the inaugural Women of the World (WOW) – Celebrating the Women of the Commonwealth event to be held in Brisbane in early 2018.

The Palaszczuk Government will partner with Brisbane-based non-profit organisation Of One Mind and Southbank Centre London to deliver the three-day event which will connect, inspire and empower women and girls from around the Commonwealth to make change in their lives and communities.

"WOW will form part of the broader GC2018 arts and cultural program, ensuring the benefits of the Games extend far beyond the 11 days of sport and continue well into the future," the Premier said.

"The event encourages frank discussions about the barriers which prevent females from reaching their full potential, along with identifying possible solutions to overcome these challenges.

''I'm immensely proud to support WOW which will showcase the achievements of women and girls, their stories, challenges and creativity, as well as the extraordinary diversity of Commonwealth cultures and traditions."

WOW, to be staged at the Brisbane Powerhouse, will feature workshops, markets, exhibitions, performances, film, concerts and more. Speakers will include well-known leaders and change-makers in politics, arts, science and sports.

The Premier said the event would place a special focus on women and girls living in remote and regional parts of Queensland, as well as females in South-East Asia and the Pacific.

''We're thrilled to act alongside the Commonwealth Games Federation in its capacity as a world leader and inspiration in addressing the ongoing challenge of gender inequality," she said.

''On a global scale, WOW is smashing glass ceilings when it comes to gender inequality and this is something the Queensland Government is committed to supporting by welcoming the event to Brisbane.

"The momentum created by WOW will continue through the Games, which will be the first in the history of major multi-sport games to have an equal number of men's and women's medal events.

"I'd encourage all Queenslanders with a passion for arts, culture and celebrating women to support this event. WOW is for everyone and is guaranteed to be an uplifting, fun and life-changing experience."

Ms Louise Martin CBE, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), congratulated the Queensland Government on its association with WOW.

"With equal number of medal moments for men and women for the first time ever at a major Games, GC2018 will show just how far we have come since the first Games in 1930, when women competed in just over 10% of medal events" Ms Martin said.

"I am thrilled that the first ever WOW will take place as part of the GC2018 Festival programme and hope it is the first of many WOW's to support, challenge and celebrate our Games and our host nations.

"With the support and commitment of the Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk and Jude Kelly CBE of WOW, together we take even greater steps towards the CGF's, and the Commonwealth's shared vision for gender equality when we meet on the Gold Coast next year.

''I'd encourage all Queenslanders with a passion for arts, culture and celebrating women to support this event. WOW is for everyone and is guaranteed to be an uplifting, fun and life-changing experience."

Ms Kelly said she was delighted to be working with women in Queensland to deliver the first ever WOW aligned with a Commonwealth Games.

"The diverse traditions and cultures, and the contrasting and shared experiences for women and girls within this huge global community, will contribute to a fascinating and life-changing WOW program in 2018," Ms Kelly said.

"The Commonwealth currently has a strong focus on improving opportunities for women and girls including economic empowerment, strengthening women's leadership and ending violence against women and girls. WOW is a means to stimulate action and change towards these objectives.

''As the largest single community of women in the world, we're looking forward to bringing the global WOW phenomenon to Queensland again."

Originating in London in 2010, WOW is now staged in 15 locations across five continents with more regions joining the global movement each year. WOW Brisbane was staged in 2015 and WOW Melbourne will take place later this year.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will run from 4 to15 April 2018.
