Gold Coast company set to build Commonwealth Games Hockey venue

Gold Coast company Alder Constructions Pty Ltd has won the contract to upgrade the Gold Coast Hockey Centre ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Commonwealth Games Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the Helensvale firm will undertake construction works on the $14.5 million project which will support 50 local jobs.

"This is a significant project for a local Gold Coast company that will generate local jobs and deliver a world class hockey facility that will be a lasting legacy for the community," Minister Hinchliffe said.

"From design through construction, the redevelopment of the Gold Coast Hockey Centre for the 2018 Commonwealth Games will support 50 jobs for Queenslanders.

"And with this contract going to a local Gold Coast business, it means locals will be on the job leading the transformation and upgrade of the venue.

"The hockey redevelopment will include the realignment of the synthetic pitches to meet international competition requirements as well as the upgrade and expansion of the clubhouse to deliver permanent seating for 200 spectators, with capacity for 5,000 spectators at Games time.

"The upgrade will not only provide outstanding facilities for the local hockey community, it will help attract major competitions and international training camps long after GC2018."

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the announcement was a boost for jobs on the Gold Coast.

"I'm pleased the tender for the works to the Gold Coast Hockey Centre has gone to a local firm. Much of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) expenditure will be on procurement, offering a wide range of business opportunities for local suppliers," Mr Tate said.

"The Gold Coast Hockey Centre is a legacy project that will ensure Hockey remains a key sport on the Gold Coast beyond GC2018 and will help attract other major competitions and international training camps in future."

Federal Minister for Sport Sussan Ley said it was great to see the competitiveness of the local construction industry in winning this contract.

"This investment in hockey infrastructure will support local jobs, providing a boost to the economy, and deliver the community a Centre that meets international standards for local and visiting athletes," Ms Ley said.

"The Australian Government has committed $156 million to the 2018 Commonwealth Games to provide a legacy into the future, not just for south-east Queensland, but for the nation as a whole."

Alder Constructions are scheduled to commence work on expanding the existing clubhouse facility in February 2016 and work on the world-class synthetic pitches will take place over the hockey off-season from late 2016.

The upgrades will include expansion of the existing amenities building to incorporate new meeting rooms, kitchen and bar facilities, a function room, change rooms, toilets and permanent spectator seating overlooking the two synthetic pitches.

The Gold Coast office of architectural firm MODE Design provided the designs for the upgraded Hockey Centre while the Gold Coast office of Aquenta Consulting is the Audit Quantity Surveyor.

The Gold Coast Hockey Centre project is scheduled for completion in early 2017, 12 months ahead of the Games.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) will inject approximately $2 billion into the economy and presents one of the most significant procurement programs over the next decade with a wide-range of opportunities for business.

Commonwealth Games broadcaster set to showcase Queensland to the world

An Australian-based company will broadcast the television feed of all the sporting action from Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games to an estimated audience of 1.5 billion people around the world and deliver 1,200 jobs in Queensland.

Expert broadcasters NEP Australia (formerly Global TV Australia) will beam high-definition television coverage to Channel Seven in Australia and all the Rights Holding Broadcasters around the world, capturing footage of the Games' ceremonies and 11 days of sporting competition.

Minister for the Commonwealth Games Stirling Hinchliffe said the host broadcaster services tender is the single biggest Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games contract.

"This announcement will deliver more than 1,200 jobs and also hundreds of training opportunities for students here in Queensland," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"The Commonwealth Games is the largest sporting event to be staged in Australia this decade – it will broadcast our state to the world, inject more than $2 billion into Queensland's economy and support up to 30,000 jobs.

"This announcement is a major boost for Queensland's creative industries and will support talented broadcasters and technicians across the state.

"Importantly this announcement also means that NEP Australia will provide training for 200 local college and university students in the lead up to the Games and give them real-life exposure to a major international event.

"This investment in our state's students will be a tremendous legacy from the Games and will help to build the next generation of broadcast talent in our state."

Mr Hinchliffe said NEP Australia is the largest employer of broadcast freelance professionals in Queensland and is in the process of establishing an office in Bundall on the Gold Coast and will also manage the design, installation and operation of the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"NEP Australia will lay over 100 kilometres of cable, and deploy 350 cameras, to produce over 1,100 hours of live television, radio and digital coverage during the Games for the world's Rights Holding Broadcasters, which will be transmitted via 25 outside broadcast vehicles and control rooms," Mr Hinchliffe said.

Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) CEO Mark Peters said the signing of the Host Broadcaster is a major milestone in the planning for the Games.

"Today's announcement of NEP as our Host Broadcaster gives us absolute confidence that the best possible coverage of GC2018 will be delivered and, in doing so, showcase the Gold Coast as a world destination event city and images of Queensland around the globe," Mr Peters said.

"NEP's broadcast will also include Ultra High Definition broadcast of the Opening Ceremony - four times the resolution of current High Definition."

NEP Australia President Soames Treffry said the Commonwealth Games have a proud history of bringing a diverse family of nations together to celebrate world-class sporting prowess.

"Faultless capture and international distribution of television, radio and internet-delivered material by the Host Broadcaster is essential to a successful Games," Mr Teffry said.

"We will strive to ensure this is the Games' best-ever coverage across all platforms."

Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) CEO, David Grevemberg CBE, welcomed the appointment.

"NEP will provide the lens through which the world will view the Games, the Gold Coast, Queensland and Australia," Mr Grevemberg said.

"The role of the Host Broadcaster is pivotal to the success of the media operations of any Commonwealth Games, but never more so than in 2018 when a cumulative audience of over 1.5 billion people will watch the Gold Coast action in more ways and more places than ever before."

NEP is internationally recognised for its technical expertise in Host Broadcasting and major events, managing complex projects such as the 2014 G20 Leaders' Summit. They will be supported by the GC2018 Australian Rights Holder the Seven Network and UK production company Sunset+Vine.

Gold Coast 2018 will be NEP Australia's fourth consecutive Commonwealth Games with the Australian-based company having successfully delivered the broadcast for the Glasgow 2014, Delhi 2010 and the Melbourne 2006 Games.

NEP facilitates more than 2,000 hours of Australian broadcast television each year, including live sport such as NRL, AFL, cricket and the Gold Coast 600 V8 Supercars and popular series and drama such as My Kitchen Rules, The Voice and Neighbours. The company has also helped deliver the live entertainment and event programs Dancing with the Stars, The Footy Show and the annual Logie awards.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held from April 4 -15, 2018.

ABC News --> 2018 Commonwealth Games: Water taxis and ferries floated as transport options

QuoteWater taxis and ferries in the Gold Coast's waterways could help the city cope with the influx of people to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) is calling for the use of water taxis and ferries to be explored in the run-up to the event.

GOLDOC chairman Nigel Chamier said public transport would be key to the success of the games.

He said he was pleased the Gold Coast Airport would be expanded and the light rail extended.

Early in February an accident closed the Pacific Motorway (M1), causing traffic gridlock across the Gold Coast.

But Mr Chamier said the city's waterways would help if a situation like that occurred again.

"To see what we can in the way of the use of waterways for taxis, water taxis and ferries, I think that is going to be a positive thing," he said.

"Of course we have been working, and will continue to work, to investigate all of the different options that are available in terms of alternative access, should a nightmare scenario occur."

Mr Chamier said free public transport to encourage people to use the trains, trams and buses would also reduce the strain on the M1.

"We're lucky for the opening and closing ceremonies it's not that far, for the athletics it's not that far from Nerang railway station," he said.

He said park and ride options would be vital as there would be no private parking at key event venues.

"You can imagine 40,000 people, plus the volunteers, plus staff working at say Carrara, it's just physically not possible to have that many car parks allocated there," Mr Chamier said.

The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games begin in April 2018.

GC2018 to host biggest para-sport program in Commonwealth Games history

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games is going for gold to deliver an inclusive Games, unveiling the biggest para-sport program in Commonwealth Games history.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) announced the integrated para-sport program for the 2018 Games today, marking international Commonwealth Day celebrations and this year's theme of 'an inclusive Commonwealth'.

Minister for the Commonwealth Games Stirling Hinchliffe joined Australian elite para-sport athletes, Evan O'Hanlon OAM, Brenden Hall OAM, Madeleine Hogan OAM, Rowan Crothers and aspiring para-triathlete, Sara Tait at an event in South Bank to announce details of the record-breaking program.

"Gold Coast 2018 is going for gold to deliver an inclusive Games and will host the largest para-sports program in its history," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"We will be setting a new record in Commonwealth Games sporting history hosting up to 300 para-sport athletes and 38 medal events across seven sports, which is an increase of 45 per cent more athletes and 73 per cent more medals compared to the para-sport competition staged at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

"I am also pleased to announce there will be an equal number of men's and women's events across all seven para-sports highlighting the commitment to equality and inclusion at the 2018 Games."

Disability Services Minister Coralee O'Rourke said increasing the inclusion of people with disability in the Commonwealth Games was a step in the right direction towards creating equal opportunities for all Australians.

"People with disability should be supported to participate in and contribute to all levels of sport, and I am pleased that this has been recognised in time for Gold Coast 2018," Ms O'Rourke said.

"CGF and the GOLDOC are leading the way by integrating elite athletes with disability into the Games through the para-sport program. This program is already doing a fantastic job by putting para-athletes and their achievements in the spotlight.

"People with disability can achieve amazing things – such as winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games - if given the opportunity, and this program will give them the opportunity to do just that."

Welcoming the announcement, CGF President Louise Martin CBE said, with the largest-ever number of para-sport events in Commonwealth sporting history, we are thrilled that Gold Coast 2018 will deliver an ambitious and welcome growth for the inclusive and integrated para-sport competition first presented at a Commonwealth Games in Manchester 2002.

"Today's announcement to celebrate 'An Inclusive Commonwealth' ensures that the next edition of the Games will enable sports fans in Australia and across the world to support a record-breaking number of para-athletes at a Commonwealth Games," Ms Martin said.

The GC2018 para-sport program has been developed by GOLDOC in consultation with the CGF, the Australian Commonwealth Games Association (ACGA) and the International Paralympic Committee to showcase the best para-sport in the Commonwealth.

The sports to be contested during the April 4 – 15 2018 event are; Athletics, Swimming, Lawn Bowls, Powerlifting, Track Cycling, Table Tennis and Triathlon. The swimming and athletics program will double in size from previous Games.

GOLDOC Chairman Nigel Chamier AM said he was delighted to announce that para-triathlon would make its debut at GC2018, building on the great success of the Triathlon competition in Glasgow 2014 and the sport's increasing profile across the globe.

"Para-sport at GC2018 will also reach its widest ever audience as the first ever wheelchair marathon (T54) at a Commonwealth Games  takes to the streets and communities of the Gold Coast as part of the free road events. .

Renowned World, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games champion, Australian, Kurt Fearnley OAM has suggested GC2018 might be his final representative race.

"I am so proud and can't think of a more fitting way to celebrate Commonwealth Day and 'An Inclusive Commonwealth', than this exciting announcement today," Mr Fearnley said.

City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the expanded GC2018 para-sport program would set the benchmark for future host cities.

"A fantastic legacy from our Games would be for other host cities to also adopt an expanded para-sport program," said Cr Tate.

"Having more world class athletes here competing at the pinnacle of their sport is great for our Games and great for the spectators."

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will be staged from 4 – 15 April 2018.

Background on Commonwealth Day:

Commonwealth Day is celebrated across the Commonwealth on the second Monday in March every year. It provides an opportunity to promote understanding on global issues, international co-operation and the work of Commonwealth organisations.

The Commonwealth Day 2016 theme is 'An Inclusive Commonwealth'.

The idea came from Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau who wanted one day each year on which all Commonwealth countries could mark their membership and encourage commitment to the association.

Each year, the Head of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II, marks the celebration with an interdenominational service held in Westminster Abbey. The Queen also delivers an address to the Commonwealth, which is broadcast throughout the world.

Commonwealth Games site gives students running start in jobs race

Queensland students are kick-starting their construction career and learning on the job as part of the team building the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Village.

Minister for the Commonwealth Games said local students were gaining construction qualifications and real-world experience on the world-class Parklands Project site as part of the Queensland Government-funded Get Ready 4 Construction program and the Construction Skills Queensland-funded Trade Start program.

Mr Hinchliffe congratulated the first intake of graduating students today and said the program was providing job seekers with dynamic industry-based training and future employment opportunities in the construction industry.

"Over the past 12 weeks, five students from the Gold Coast School of Construction have completed their Certificate I in Construction, along with 160 hours of structured workplace learning, personal development and green skills training," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"This program is an investment in the workforce of the future and will ensure locals students have the skills they need to gain work in the construction industry.

"As part of the program students assisted in the fit-out of their own dedicated training facility within the $550 million Grocon Parklands Project site, constructed desks, an external covered area and outdoor timber chairs and underwent four weeks of work placement with local contractors.

"The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games is providing tremendous opportunities for employment and upskilling of our local workforce which will be a great Games legacy.

"Future intakes of the Trade Start program will undertake placement with a Parklands Project sub-contractor giving them direct access to a large-scale Commonwealth Games project while they complete their training."

Training and Skills Minister Yvette D'Ath said this program was a great example of the training opportunities and life-long careers available in Queensland.

"These programs are providing Queenslanders with opportunities for the future while also building the workforce of the growing South East corridor," Ms D'Ath said.

"The Palaszczuk Government is committed to supporting training and skills development for all Queenslanders and looks forward to watching over the success of the Parklands Project training program."

Nerang's Tyson Dunn, 19, said he was eternally grateful for the opportunities presented to him during training with the Gold Coast School of Construction.

"This course has enabled me to not only stand on my own two feet but learn some great everyday skills and meet some great mates along the way," Tyson said.

"I am excited for my future in construction, with the confidence that I'm now leading my own career path."

A second intake of students started on the Parklands Project on March 14, with further programs starting on May 9, July 14, August 29 and October 24.

Construction on track in race to 2018 Commonwealth Games

With two years to go until the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, the $320 million construction program for competition venues is on track and on budget, with all new and upgraded facilities set to be delivered within the next 12 months.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Minister for the Commonwealth Games Stirling Hinchliffe today revealed more than 4,000 workers had already played a role in the construction of the new and upgraded competition venues and the Games Village.

"Construction on Commonwealth Games venues is supporting jobs on the Gold Coast with more than 4,000 workers already inducted across eight different work sites where work is currently underway," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"This month there will be 860 full-time workers employed across all the venue and village construction sites, supporting strong jobs growth on the Gold Coast with the annual local employment up 5.4 percent on this time last year.

"More than 2,500 full time jobs will be created during design and construction in delivering the sport and community infrastructure for the Games, and thousands of new jobs and opportunities for small businesses are in the pipeline.

"There are more opportunities ahead for local business with at least 117 sub-contracts still to be awarded to work on the seven venues currently under construction and the Games Village.

"We're delivering world-class facilities for the Games on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane, including three new multipurpose sporting venues, a 4000m2 soundstage at Village Roadshow that will double as a squash venue at Games-time and major upgrades to a further seven venues."

Minister for the Commonwealth Games Stirling Hinchliffe said the two-year mark also signalled the start of the 12-month countdown to deliver the new and upgraded competition venues ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"The two-year mark is an important milestone for the Commonwealth Games, but it also signals the final leg of the race to deliver the venue infrastructure for the Games," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"From today there are only 12 months on the clock to deliver all the new and upgraded venues ahead of the Games.

"All of our sporting venues that are being either developed completely or upgraded for the purposes of hosting the Commonwealth Games, will be in place and able to host test events 12 months before the Games commence."

Mr Hinchliffe said Gold Coast and Queensland businesses were benefiting from the construction opportunities around the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"When it comes to the medal tally for procurement, Gold Coast and Queensland businesses are performing strongly," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"To date, of the $404 million in construction contracts awarded for the venues and village projects, $366 million have been awarded to Queensland companies and of this, $184 million have been awarded to Gold Coast contractors and $182 million to South East Queensland businesses.

"This means more than 90 percent of all construction contracts so far have been awarded to businesses either on the Gold Coast or in the South East corner.

"And South East Queensland businesses have secured 83 of the 85 contracts awarded to date for the Commonwealth Games Village Parklands Project."

Mr Hinchliffe said there will be more opportunities for small businesses coming in the pipeline with demand growing for a whole range of services including catering, security and cleaning.

Of the 1,927 contracts and sponsorships awarded by GOLDOC since 2013-14, 1,724, or 89 percent, have been awarded to Gold Coast or Queensland businesses, which is great news for small businesses across Queensland.

"The Games will inject $2 billion into the economy, which is why the Palaszczuk Government is focused on making sure local businesses are Games-ready, just like our athletes will be ready for the sporting competition," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"My message to small business going forward is make sure you register on the Business and Industry Portal because you've got to be in it to win it.

"For businesses interested in finding more information about opportunities around the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, the website ICN Gateway has information about registering a business and available work packages, and can help connect suppliers to potential buyers and partners.

"I'm pleased to see local businesses have responded strongly to date, with 3,038 businesses having registered 19,238 expressions of interest in Commonwealth Games work packages."

The following competition venues are on track to be delivered in the next 12 months, delivering a legacy of permanent works:

Carrara Sport and Leisure Centre (construction underway)         late-2016
Coomera Indoor Sports Centre (construction underway)            mid-2016
Queensland State Velodrome (construction underway)               mid-2016

I personally think they did a pretty good job coming up with Borobi. I was a bit worried about what they might have come up with – there have been more than a few shockers when it comes to Commonwealth Games & (especially) Olympic Games mascots.

Borobi surfs wave of popularity to become GC2018 mascot

A loveable koala with fur the colour of the ocean and a passion for surfing and adventure was spectacularly revealed this morning as the mascot for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games™ (GC2018).

Borobi – the indigenous Yugambeh language word for koala – will play a key role in welcoming the athletes of the world and bringing to life the true spirit of the Games.

It is the first time a koala has been chosen as the mascot of a major Australian multisport event.

Inspired by a drawing by Brisbane school teacher Merrilyn Krohn, the winner of the GC2018 Mascot Design Competition, Borobi's outgoing and positive personality will invite the world to Share the Dream™ of GC2018.

This morning's nationally televised arrival on the beach at Burleigh Heads on Queensland's Gold Coast comes exactly two years to the day to the Opening Ceremony of the 4-15 April 2018 sports spectacular.

Commonwealth Games Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said Borobi has enormous appeal and is proving an instant hit.

"Borobi is a very special and unique koala whose personality embodies all the values of the Gold Coast and the Australian way of life," Minister Hinchliffe said.

"He is fun, approachable, determined, passionate and active.

"There is no doubt he will become an endearing personality of GC2018 and hugely popular with people of all ages," he said.

Minister Hinchliffe said koalas were a popular choice for many who entered the mascot design competition.

"A large number of koala drawings were submitted in the competition, more than any other animal, proving just how popular this iconic Australian marsupial is and what a great choice we've made in Borobi," he said.

Borobi's hand drawn design took the judges' eyes because of a number of unique characteristics.

That design was then finessed by Brisbane designers SapientNitro and animation specialists Cutting Edge.

Winning designer Merrilyn Krohn said designing the mascot was 'something I thought I could have a go at'.

"An idea came to mind as soon as I heard about the competition and I just spent the rest of the day drawing the design," Merrilyn said.

"I add drawings into my teaching. It's part of connecting with the children and having a laugh with them.

"I need to have them draw for their inspiration and that leads on to their writing and their creativity.

"If I can demonstrate something to them through drawing, it all follows on from there," Merrilyn said.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Chairman Nigel Chamier AM said Borobi will have an important role to play over the coming two years.

"Mascots have become iconic symbols of the Commonwealth Games, providing an emotional connection between athletes, spectators and the community," Mr Chamier said.

"When we challenged the Australian community to design the GC2018 mascot we were not only overwhelmed by the response and quality of the entries, but by the excitement that was generated by the very chance to create the personality of the Games.

"Borobi joins two very memorable mascots from previous Commonwealth Games hosted in Australia, Matilda at the Brisbane 1982 Commonwealth Games and Melbourne 2006's Karak, a south-eastern Red-tailed Black Cockatoo.

"As the Commonwealth gets to know Borobi and his life story over the coming two years, they will be carried along on his exciting journey.

"And through him they will discover the wonderful values of the Gold Coast and the Australian way of life," he said.

David Grevemberg CBE, Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation, said
he is delighted to welcome the addition of Borobi to the Commonwealth Games movement's long line of loveable mascots.

"Borobi will connect athletes, sport and the Games with young people and communities; but far more than a cuddly icon, he'll promote Australia and powerful messages about its natural and aboriginal heritage to the world," Mr Grevemberg said.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate was characteristically excited about Borobi's arrival.

"When residents, visitors, officials, athletes and sponsors reflect on the success of an event such as the Commonwealth Games, their memories of the Games' official mascot is vital," Mayor Tate said.

"This mascot will bring just the right enthusiasm, fun and energy our city is renowned for and will be part of the lasting legacy of what is shaping to be a great Games.

"Borobi will be as memorable to our children as Matilda was to those who enjoyed Brisbane in 1982.''

GC2018 countdown clock strikes two years to go

This Monday 4 April will see the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games™(GC2018) countdown clock strike just two years to go until Queensland's Gold Coast transforms into the stage for the XXI Commonwealth Games – the largest in the event's history.

From 4 – 15 April 2018 the Gold Coast and event cities of Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns will welcome 6,600 athletes and team officials from 71 nations and territories to compete in 18 sports and seven para-sports across 11 days of exhilarating competition.

And with two years to go the event city is gearing up to play host to some of the world's best athletes and visitors from every corner of the globe.

With Beach Volleyball added to the sports program and the event now boasting the largest para-sport program in Commonwealth Games history, GC2018 is well on its way to delivering an inclusive and once in a lifetime experience for all.

The year ahead is marked with key milestones including the announcement of the first official GC2018 Ambassadors and the development of the Queen's Baton. The Baton reveal is scheduled for late 2016.

Three new venues that will host GC2018 sports are on track for completion before the end of the year, with the Carrara Sport and Leisure Centre, the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre and Queensland's first indoor Velodrome in Brisbane delivering an early legacy and an opportunity for use ahead of the Games.

The super sound stage at Oxenford's Studios that will host the Squash competition is almost complete and given it is the largest sound stage in Australia will be a great asset to help attract big-budget blockbuster films productions to Queensland in the future.

In 2016 the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) team will grow from currently 255 to more than 300 employees by December, on a rapid trajectory to more than 1,000 by 2018.

And as the team expands so too does the list of sponsors joining the GC2018 sponsor family.

TAFE Queensland have recently joined official partners Jupiters and Griffith University with specialist accountant and law firms KPMG and MinterEllison on board as Official Supporters, alongside SEEK, the Official Recruitment Advertiser of GC2018, GOLDOC and the Australian Commonwealth Games Team.

Brisbane-based Centium Software was also recently announced as an Official Supplier to GC2018.

With the clock ticking louder each day the Games is well and truly on track with GOLDOC and its Games Delivery Partners looking forward to sharing the dream on the journey to 2018.

Minister for the Commonwealth Games, The Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe

"In two years from today, spectators from around the globe will watch the Opening Ceremony to mark the start of 11 days of world-class sporting competition on the Gold Coast," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"The two-year mark is a key milestone in the countdown and with 18 sports and seven para-sports in 2018, we're going for gold to ensure the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will be a record-breaking success.

"With only two years to go, excitement is building across Queensland and our venues are on track to be Games-ready a full one year ahead of the Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018.

"The Commonwealth Games will be the biggest sporting event in Australia this decade and will deliver great benefits to the state, injecting $2 billion into the economy and supporting up to 30,000 jobs."

City of Gold Coast Mayor, Tom Tate

"This milestone reminds us all that we will soon be on the world stage," Mr Tate said.

"We encourage everyone to embrace the opportunities GC2018 will bring and enjoy the many occasions where we can celebrate this unique and once in a lifetime journey," Mr Chamier said.

The Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe

Brisbane joins the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games team

With just under two years to go until the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018), Brisbane residents are being encouraged to fly the Games flag and get behind what will be the biggest sporting event in Australia this decade.

Minister for the Commonwealth Games Stirling Hinchliffe today presented Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk with the official event city flag, welcoming Brisbane to the GC2018 team as host of the track cycling and shooting events.

"All the Commonwealth Games sporting action and celebrations from the event cities will be beamed to a massive worldwide audience of more than 1.5 billion people," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"As an official event city for track cycling and shooting the international spotlight will be on Brisbane showcasing our state of the art sporting venues and tourist attractions.

"The new $59 million Queensland State Velodrome is on track for completion mid-year, while in preparation for the Games' shooting events, the Belmont Shooting Centre will undergo a $16.5 million upgrade later this year."

Minister Hinchliffe said the Palaszczuk Government was also investing in the rail network to ensure Brisbane residents and visitors can commute to the Gold Coast to watch Games events.

"Last month construction began on the Queensland Government-funded $163 million Coomera to Helensvale rail duplication which will increase capacity and allow us to run more services come Games time," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"With Stage Two of Gold Coast Light Rail on track we're also completing the missing public transport link between the two event cities meaning passengers will be able to catch public transport from Brisbane right into the heart of the Gold Coast.

"The Stage 2 extension will mean that during the Games, 3,000 people an hour will be able to travel from Helensvale to Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, which means thousands of Brisbane residents and visitors each day will be able to access all the action and excitement of the Games."

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the South East Queensland region would set an international example and strongly embrace the spirit of the Commonwealth Games in the lead up to the event in 2018.

"Brisbane is a great place to live, work and play and our city looks forward to welcoming many thousands of guests during the 2018 Commonwealth Games and showing the world how proud we are of our great city and the South East Queensland region," Mr Quirk said.

"The Commonwealth Games cycling and shooting events will be held at Chandler and Belmont and I invite residents, visitors and athletes to embrace the games experience and showcase Brisbane's ability to stage major sporting and cultural events."

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will run from 4 - 15 April 2018.

GC2018 basketball scores new presenting partner

Minister for the Commonwealth Games Stirling Hinchliffe today welcomed TAFE Queensland to the team as an official presenting partner for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) basketball competition in Cairns and Townsville.

Mr Hinchliffe shot some hoops with players from the Cairns Taipans basketball team to celebrate the partnership with TAFE Queensland and mark the 721 day countdown until the Games officially start.

"With less than two years to go until the Commonwealth Games come to Cairns, preparations for the basketball competition in Cairns are on track to be held at the Convention Centre," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"As host of Commonwealth Games basketball heats, Cairns will be front and centre when the action starts in April 2018 and I know basketball fans around the state are counting down the 721 days until the competition begins.

"It's been ten years since basketball debuted as a Commonwealth Games sport at the 2006 Melbourne Games and it's fantastic it will be back in Cairns and Townsville for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"Australia has a great record of performing well in the Commonwealth Games basketball competition and I'm confident our team will go for gold in 2018.

"The Boomers scored their first ever major tournament gold medal at the 2006 Melbourne Games and I know all of Australia will be cheering the team on to win in 2018."

Cairns Basketball President and Taipans CEO Mark Beecroft said the heats will be fantastic promotion for the regional NBL team and the overall growth of basketball in Queensland.

"I'm thrilled that Cairns has been recognised as a world-class sporting location and will be hosting preliminary basketball matches for the Games at the Cairns Convention Centre," said Mr Beecroft.

"As the only national sports team in the region, the Cairns Taipans have a proven track record of hosting major events on their home court and have a very loyal fan base that love their basketball.

"This is an opportunity to showcase what the club has been able to achieve and demonstrate what basketball means to this community on an international scale."

Mr Hinchliffe said the visit to Cairns was a great opportunity to congratulate TAFE Queensland on furthering their commitment to help deliver a great Games event in 2018.

"The basketball preliminary matches will be contested in Cairns and Townsville and I'm very confident that the training provided by TAFE Queensland means the regional volunteers at both venues will be capable, enthusiastic and ready to welcome visitors and athletes from all over the world," Mr Hinchliffe said.

TAFE Queensland North General Manager Joann Pyne said TAFE was proud to be coming onboard as an official presenting partner for the basketball competition at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and would also be helping to train more than 15,000 volunteers.

"We are committed to inspiring growth, and building capability and transferable skills that will last a lifetime for GC2018 volunteers in Cairns and across all GC2018 venues," Ms Pyne said.

The Cairns Convention Centre and the Townsville Convention and Exhibition Centre will each host five days of preliminary round basketball, with the finals being played at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will be staged from 4-15 April 2018.

Coolangatta scores Commonwealth Games Beach Volleyball competition

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) will serve up spectacular shots of Queensland's iconic surf and sand to global audiences, with Coolangatta's beachfront unveiled as the venue for Beach Volleyball.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Commonwealth Games Minister Stirling Hinchliffe today announced Coolangatta will host the first Beach Volleyball competition in Commonwealth Games history, with a temporary stadium set to be built in Queen Elizabeth Park overlooking the city's southern-most beach.

"The Gold Coast's beautiful beaches are a huge Games drawcard and the decision to host the Beach Volleyball competition at Coolangatta will ensure the spotlight is on Queensland's spectacular coastline," the Premier said.

"Coolangatta Beach will be a stunning backdrop for spectators watching all the Beach Volleyball action and showcase Queensland's beautiful beaches to a television audience of 1.5 billion people around the world.

"Building a temporary stadium in the park will ensure the view of the city's skyline and Coolangatta's surf will be centre stage when the Beach Volleyball competition kicks off."

Minister Hinchliffe said Coolangatta was the perfect location for the Beach Volleyball competition.

"After a city-wide scout, Coolangatta was chosen for its capacity to accommodate the infrastructure needed to meet international federation guidelines," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"The 2018 Commonwealth Games is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to promote Queensland to the world and it's fitting that one of Queensland's most iconic beaches will be the backdrop for one of the 18 competition venues.

"The final logistics to build a temporary stadium will now proceed in full consultation with the sport's governing body, the Southern Gold Coast community and key Games Delivery Partners."

City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate welcomed the announcement Coolangatta would host the GC2018 Beach Volley competition.

"What better way to showcase Beach Volleyball at our Games than stage it at one of the world's most spectacular beaches," Mr Tate said.

"Hosting the Beach Volleyball at Coolangatta will not only show off the beauty of the southern end of the city to the world, it will also provide a great boost for local businesses there.

"Beach Volleyball at Coolangatta will be one of the jewels of our Games."

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Chief Executive Officer Mark Peters said there had been great consideration given to the location for the Beach Volleyball competition.

"There is a significant space requirement for this event and much more than meets the eye when it comes to technical delivery – right down to the consistency and grade of sand on the court," Mr Peters said.

"Coolangatta is a great location for Beach Volleyball and with the magnificent beach and city skyline it is just another opportunity for the destination to be showcased to the world during the Games."

Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Vice President, Bruce Robertson said as an additional sport on the sports program of the XXI Commonwealth Games Beach Volleyball will engage more communities, athletes, partners and broadcasters.

"Beach Volleyball at GC2018 will showcase the Gold Coast as a spectacular destination on the world sporting stage and attract more Volleyball fans to watch the 11 days of Commonwealth Games sporting competition," Mr Robertson said.

Volleyball Australia Chief Executive Officer Mathieu Meriaux welcomed the announcement Coolangatta would host the Beach Volleyball competition.

"We were absolutely delighted when Beach Volleyball was added to the GC2018 sport program and I am very confident the stands at the Coolangatta venue will be filled with fans from all over the Commonwealth," Mr Meriaux said.

"And when there is a break in competition they will be taking great photos of the beautiful views and beaches to send to friends and family."

Australian Commonwealth Games Association (ACGA) Chief Executive Officer Craig Phillips said the location at the southern end of the Gold Coast was ideal for the event's debut adding it would also attract spectators from northern New South Wales.

"I've just returned from the Commonwealth Games Federation Oceania Regional meeting in Vanuatu, and there is genuine excitement in the Pacific region about the inclusion of Beach Volleyball in the GC2018 sport program," Mr Philips said.

"Coolangatta is a picturesque location and it will be a great drawcard to attract spectators to watch all the Beach Volleyball action come Games time."

Beach Volleyball secured a spot in the Gold Coast 2018 sports program after an historic agreement was signed in March this year between the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), the Queensland Government and the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC).

It is the first time Beach Volleyball will feature in a Commonwealth Games with the GC2018 sports program increasing from 17 to 18 sports – the largest sport program in the Games history.

The GC2018 sports are Athletics, Aquatics (swimming and diving), Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Cycling (road, mountain and track), Gymnastics, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby Sevens, Shooting, Squash, Table Tennis, Triathlon, Weightlifting, and Wrestling.

The fully-integrated GC2018 Para-Sport program comprising seven sports is the most extensive para-sport program on record for a Commonwealth Games.

All the sporting action for GC2018 will be staged across 18 competition venues with 14 sports on the Gold Coast, two in Brisbane (Shooting and Track Cycling) with preliminary basketball matches played in Cairns and Townsville.

I think Beattie was the last stable and competent leader. Every other since then has been disastrous.

Commonwealth Games Minister officially opens Gold Coast 2018 Host Broadcaster HQ

The global headquarters of the Host Broadcaster delivering the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) television broadcast have been officially opened today by the Minister for the Commonwealth Games Stirling Hinchliffe .

Led by NEP Australia, with the support of production partners the Seven Network (Seven) and Sunset+Vine (S+V), the Host Broadcaster will produce High Definition multi-camera television coverage across 11 days of sporting competition plus the Opening and Closing ceremonies (with the Opening Ceremony also to be produced in 4K Ultra HD) for delivery to rights-holding broadcasters around the world.

The Host Broadcast team currently numbers 20, comprising the key management group and broadcast training manager, two venue-planning teams and administrative staff. It will expand to 30 members in early 2017, 60 over the course of next year, and reach a Games-time workforce of more than 1,200.

In addition to the Minister, guests at the launch – held at the Host Broadcaster's Bundall Road (Bundall, QLD) HQ – included Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Chairman Peter Beattie AC, and CEO Mark Peters; NEP Australia President Soames Treffry; Seven West Media's, Event Director – Rio Olympics, Commonwealth Games and Chief Revenue Officer, Kurt Burnette and Seven Network's Head of Sport, Saul Shtein; sports commentator and Olympian Giaan Rooney OAM, who also acted as event MC; and a number of Queensland university students who will be gaining hands-on work experience through the Host Broadcast training program.

Commonwealth Games Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said GC2018 would be the biggest televised sporting event in Australia this decade.

"With an expected television audience of 1.5 billion people worldwide, it is vital the broadcast is provided by an organisation with exceptional expertise and experience," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"I congratulate NEP Australia on the opening of its Host Broadcast operations on the Gold Coast and welcome the opportunities they will provide, including valuable work-experience and training for university students, and jobs for local industry professionals.

"This is a great example of a unique industry coming to Queensland because of the Games and I am delighted their team will call the Gold Coast home for the next two years."

GOLDOC Chairman Peter Beattie AC added his congratulations to NEP Australia.

"This office opening represents a very tangible legacy for the Gold Coast and Queensland that is a direct outcome of the Games.

"There is the very obvious economic benefit of the many NEP staff relocating to the city in the lead up to and duration of the Games, but importantly the expertise they impart to students will enable them to kick start their careers with skills gained working amongst the world's greatest multi-sport global broadcasters.

"We look forward to sharing the exciting journey towards 2018 with the NEP Australia team," Mr Beattie said.

To ensure Gold Coast 2018 achieves the best-ever coverage across all platforms, the Host Broadcast team are drawing on their collective experience from previous Commonwealth Games, Olympic and Paralympic competitions.

NEP Australia President Soames Treffry said: "As our previous Commonwealth Games experience has shown, detailed forward planning is key to getting a project of this complexity off to a flying start. We hit the ground running, with our core team in place more than two years from the Gold Coast 2018 Opening Ceremony."

Event Director – Rio Olympics, Commonwealth Games and Chief Revenue Officer, Seven West Media, Kurt Burnette said: "With sports production and great storytelling in our DNA, Seven is delighted to share our experience and expertise and is proud to be a key partner in delivery of an event of this significance for our country. We are excited to be a part of the team that will deliver world-class coverage, not just to every Australian, but to the world."

Beyond its partnership with NEP and Sunset + Vine, Seven will also create the most extensive coverage of a Commonwealth Games across its broadcast television platform and on connected devices in the network's single biggest local sports production commitment in Australia since the Olympic Games in 2000.

Seven's Head of Sport Saul Shtein said: "Seven is delighted to be joining with NEP and Sunset+Vine in what will be the biggest event to hit our shores since the Olympic Games in Sydney. We are looking forward to being a partner in the production of the global television coverage and bringing these Commonwealth Games to all Australians."

Jeff Foulser, Chairman of Sunset+Vine, added: "After the success of the Glasgow Games it's great to see the team making strides towards Gold Coast 2018. Together we're covering all the bases to provide an innovative, high quality and reliable Host Broadcast service."

The 121-week project schedule is well underway. Current priorities include:

Surveys to determine camera positions across 20 venues in and around the Gold Coast (including basketball from Cairns and Townsville, and shooting and track cycling from Brisbane).
Confirming Host Broadcaster space requirements at each of the venues.
    Determining broadcast compound layouts.
    Sourcing suppliers.
Connecting to Queensland universities and colleges for the Host Broadcast training program.

The project's training program includes work experience opportunities for 200 Queensland students during the Games, who will work alongside some of Australia's leading broadcast professionals. This will provide students with invaluable broadcast industry experience for their future careers in television.

As part of the training program, eight students have been selected from six Queensland universities to be part of the Seven Network's Rio 2016 Olympic Games coverage at NEP's studio complex in Sydney. This integrated learning approach is a unique opportunity for these students to be part of a live multi-sport international broadcast, experience they can bring back for their work on the Gold Coast Games. Many of these students attended today's launch.

Seven has been a great supporter of the training program, with Queensland students also attending Seven's AFL matches to observe and learn from the telecast production teams.

Commonwealth Games Minister to visit UK in lead up to GC2018

Minister for Transport and the Commonwealth Games Stirling Hinchliffe will travel to the United Kingdom today to inspect Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games venues and meet with key officials and Australian businesses to discuss legacy and planning the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"We're looking to learn from Glasgow to ensure GC2018 will be a tremendously successful Games," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"With less than two years to go, and the recent assessment of our preparation by the Commonwealth Games Federation it's timely to meet with Glasgow officials and ministers to discuss the coordination of sport and cultural programs to learn from their success and make sure we can deliver a great Games legacy for Queensland.

"With 640 days to go until the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) planning is ramping up and we're focused on ensuring we deliver a Games legacy for Queensland."

Mr Hinchliffe said the visit to the United Kingdom came at a time of particular importance for Queensland with the recent EU referendum result.

"It is vital for Queensland to maintain strong ties to all of our trading and investment partners, including the United Kingdom, during a period of instability," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"Queensland is a strong, stable investment destination for capital, infrastructure and tourism and I'll be meeting with the Commonwealth Bank in London, with KPMG's Global Head of Infrastructure and with Deloitte and Merrill Lynch Bank.

"While in the UK I will also meet with Australian High Commissioner Alexander Downer and former High Commissioner Mike Rann, to be briefed on the current economic climate following the EU referendum."

Mr Hinchliffe said the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will showcase Queensland to the world as a solid trade and tourism destination.

"All the Commonwealth Games sporting action and celebrations from the event cities will be beamed to a massive worldwide audience of more than 1.5 billion people," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"That's why during this trip we'll be meeting with more potential sponsors aboard to promote our state and the opportunities for business to be affiliated with the Games.

"With the Rio Olympic Games around the corner, we expect national and international interest to increase around GC2018 and this visit will ensure we're on the front foot attracting more international sponsor interest."

Sally Pearson appointed first official Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Ambassador

Australian track queen Sally Pearson OAM was announced today as the first official ambassador of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) at a public function on the Gold Coast beachfront.

The popular announcement was made by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk MP beside the GC2018 Surfers Paradise Countdown Clock at a presentation hosted by Olympic and Commonwealth Games swimming champion Brooke Hanson OAM.

One of Australia's greatest sports stars (biography following), Gold Coast resident Pearson is best known for her stunning achievements as a world, Olympic and dual Commonwealth Games hurdles gold medallist. She has had a close association with GC2018 since development of the successful bid in 2011 and played a starring role in the flag handover during the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games closing ceremony. Pearson is the first of a select group of high profile figures who will assist the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) with promotion of the 4-15 April 2018 Games to Australia and the rest of the world. As the first GC2018 Ambassador, Pearson was presented with a commemorative surfboard – an iconic keepsake of the Gold Coast lifestyle.

Also in attendance today were Commonwealth Games Minister Sterling Hinchliffe MP, Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GOLDOC) Chairman Peter Beattie AC and CEO Mark Peters, City of Gold Coast Acting Mayor Donna Gates and a large contingent of excited junior athletes.

Sally Pearson OAM:

"I'm thrilled to have officially joined the Gold Coast 2018 family to help get people all over the world as excited as I am about this magnificent event.

"The Commonwealth Games is an amazing experience for athletes and spectators, and in 2018 it will be the Gold Coast, my home town, showcased to the world.

"The 2018 Games will inspire a new generation of young athletes and provide the perfect opportunity for the next wave of stars to shine.

"Winning Olympic gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games was a special moment, missing Rio (2016 Olympic Games) is definitely one of those low points, but I'm focused on giving myself the best opportunity to compete at a home Games.

"As an official ambassador I now have added personal interest in helping to ensure GC2018 is the massive success I already know it will be and the most memorable athlete, spectator and volunteer experience possible."

Premier of Queensland the Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk MP:

"The appointment of Sally Pearson as the first official Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games ambassador is an inspired choice.

"Sally is a shining light of athletics in this country and her well-documented achievements on the track are matched only by the personal initiative she has taken in recent years to be an exceptional mentor of young talent.

"As 2014's Most Inspirational Australian Athlete and Australian Athletics Team Captain, Sally has pedigree in leadership and it is for precisely those qualities that I know she will perform outstandingly as an ambassador of Queensland, the 2018 Games and everything they represent."

Minister for the Commonwealth Games the Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe MP:

"Today's announcement – just 631 days from the Games' opening ceremony – is another major milestone for Gold Coast 2018 and we not only look forward to having Sally with us over the coming 20 months, but also seeing her defend her Commonwealth 100m hurdles title in her own backyard.

"Sally is a champion athlete and I know every Australian will be cheering her on to victory in 2018.

"It is wonderful Sally has agreed to be the very first Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games official ambassador; a role where her heartfelt passion for sport and the Gold Coast will be recognised across the 71 nations and territories of the Commonwealth and beyond."

City of Gold Coast Acting Mayor Donna Gates: "Sally's appointment is in line with our determination to make these Games very Gold Coast focused. "She is a world-class athlete, a great personality in the city and a fierce competitor who carries our city's brand on her shoulders as she competes around the world. "I warmly welcome her as the first GC2018 ambassador.''

GOLDOC Chairman Peter Beattie AC:

"It is indeed a privilege to have a home-grown Commonwealth, Olympic and world champion as our first official ambassador.

"Sally's role, and the role of the ambassadors to come, will be to tell the world about our Games – to enthuse them to come to this beautiful and energetic place to experience for themselves the magnificent festival of sport, culture and friendship that only a Commonwealth Games can deliver.

"Sally is an incredible talent, a delightful young lady, a role model to young athletes and the perfect first ambassador of our Games.

David Grevemberg CBE, Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation

"As an athlete-centred movement, we're thrilled that a diverse and inspiring group of athlete ambassadors will help tell the story of Gold Coast 2018.

"Like all Commonwealth athletes, Sally Pearson upholds and cherishes the principle of the level playing field, connecting people across the world through a shared passion for sport and opportunities for all.

"Through her own impactful journey to the Games, she will inspire citizens and communities to make the most of Australia's largest sporting event this decade."

GOLDOC CEO Mark Peters:

"Sally has been a vital and very welcome member of the GC2018 family since the earliest days of the successful 2011 bid, and it is wonderful that she will be with us for the remainder of our exciting journey.

"She is a quintessential Gold Coaster, a champion on the world stage and an ideal role model for a Commonwealth Games that will inspire young people the world over to become more active in sport and physical fitness as one of its great legacies.

"Sally's story is only half written; her recent battles with injury will be overcome with her customary courage and plenty of hard work and we are with her every step of the way."

Australian Commonwealth Games Association CEO Craig Phillips:

Australian Commonwealth Games Association CEO Craig Phillips said he was delighted with Pearson's appointment as the first official ambassador for the Gold Coast games.  "Sally is a most fitting ambassador for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. "She is a Gold Coast local and will be aiming to represent the nation at her fourth Commonwealth Games, which would be an outstanding achievement. "Since her first appearance with us at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2004, Sally has represented Australia with great distinction all over the world, and I have no doubt she will be a wonderful ambassador for Gold Coast 2018.

Gold Coast Bulletin --> Games Glitch: Where would you rather be?

QuoteTHE grossly inadequate M1 has claimed its latest victims — Commonwealth Games cyclists and shooters who may be holed up in Brisbane hotels while other athletes live it up in the multimillion-dollar Parklands village.

Games chairman Peter Beattie and CEO Mark Peters, who both travel to Games HQ from homes in Brisbane, have revealed a costed and budgeted contingency plan should transport planners deem the busy national highway to be unfeasible for athlete travel.

Mr Peters said GOLDOC had "hundreds" of contingencies for scenarios that could happen during the Games, including weather and security events ...

Completed cycling track paves way for Games velodrome

The cycling track for Queensland's first indoor velodrome has been completed, laying the groundwork for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018).

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Minister for the Commonwealth Games Stirling Hinchliffe today visited the site to inspect the track and meet some of the 90 workers currently to complete the world-class velodrome in coming months.

"In total, more than 1400 workers have been involved in the construction of the $59 million velodrome project. I thank them for the work. This will be a world-class facility," the Premier said.

"I would like to pay tribute to companies like Beenleigh Steel Fabrications. They invested 30,000 workshop hours into the fabrication of the steel, employing an additional 12 staff to carry out the work.

"Carrara-based company Superior Walls and Ceilings have also been a major subcontractor on the project, with between 20 and 30 workers from the company on site at any one time building the doors, partitions, walls and ceiling.

"This venue will not only cater to the competing track cyclists from up to 71 nations and territories during the Games, but provide the South-East Queensland community with an ongoing venue for training and competition."

"This spectacular velodrome would attract more elite cycling competitions to Brisbane into the future."

The spectacular track was built by German family business SportBAU Schuermann GMBH, who are among the world's most experienced velodrome track builders, having delivered 143 tracks throughout the world since 1926.

The builders have a strong record delivering fantastic cycling infrastructure and have built tracks at seven Olympic and two Commonwealth Games venues.

The international competition standard 250-metre timber cycling track at our velodrome ensures the delivery of another world-class facility for GC2018 and beyond.

Mr Hinchliffe said the Queensland State Velodrome's 1165 tonne steel superstructure is around the same weight as two A380s or 150 concrete trucks, and due to the complexity of the design's shape, more than 4000 fabrication drawings were completed for the structural steel.

"With 611 days to go until the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games it is exciting to see construction progressing well on our state's first indoor velodrome, with the 1165 tonne steel superstructure complete and the track installed and certified," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"Long after the conclusion of the Games in April 2018, the Queensland State Velodrome will provide a fantastic legacy for the community, attracting elite training squads, as well as larger national and international cycling events to Queensland."

"It really is a very impressive venue and I know one that will be well received by the community and competitors alike," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"With its locality to the Brisbane Super X BMX Track and a design incorporating a range of additional community sport and recreation uses including mixed-use sport courts and function spaces, it will create a new hub for community and elite cyclists in South East Queensland."

Mike Victor OAM from Cycling Queensland and Board Member of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation and Queensland Division President of the Australian Commonwealth Games Association said the Queensland State Velodrome would be a significant legacy of the Games, providing sporting development opportunities for the local community and elite cycling in Queensland.

"This facility will attract elite training squads and competition events to South East Queensland. Already, Cycling Queensland has announced national championship events planned for the venue in 2017 and 2018," he said.

"South East Queensland business is also benefitting from the investment in sporting and community infrastructure with over 1400 workers inducted on-site at the velodrome to date.

"The 2018 Commonwealth Games are providing a unique opportunity for Queensland to leave a lasting legacy for business, industry, sporting and community groups."

The track was formally inspected by an official Union Cyclist Internationale representative for certification as an international competition venue in July.

With the track works now complete, the finishing touches will be applied to the remainder of the building and external works before the venue is officially opened later in the year.

The Queensland State Velodrome project is jointly funded by the Queensland Government and Australian Government.

$40 million Coomera Indoor Sports Centre open to community

Hundreds of volleyball players from around Queensland today became the first to test the new $40 million Coomera Indoor Sports Centre, the venue for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Gymnastics competition and Netball Finals.

Minister for the Commonwealth Games Stirling Hinchliffe officially opened the venue today ahead of Volleyball Queensland's 2016 Senior Schools Cup, the first of a number of major events already booked to be held at the new centre in the lead up to GC2018.

"More than 1000 workers were involved in the construction of the state-of-the art Coomera Indoor Sports Centre and it is the first of three new sporting venues to be finished as part of the $320 million venue construction program for the 2018 Commonwealth Games," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"Our Games construction program is on track and on budget, and it's great to see our Games infrastructure being used today by some of the state's most talented volleyball students who could be Australia's future Commonwealth or Olympic stars.

"This venue will not only host the Commonwealth's best netballers and gymnasts in April 2018, but it will deliver much-needed community infrastructure for the Gold Coast's growing population.

"Eight mixed-use sports courts and a specialist gymnastics arena will be a great Games legacy for the community, with the facility set to be used long after the Games are over.

"In fact the venue is set to be tested with a number of netball and basketball fixtures already scheduled for the venue pre-Games, along with gymnastics, dance competitions and Little Athletics."

Federal Minister for Sport Sussan Ley said she was proud to cooperate with the Queensland Government on the project.

"Our $156 million partnership with the Queensland Government on the 2018 Commonwealth Games shows the Australian Government is committed to delivering a permanent sporting legacy to the people of South-East Queensland, and the nation as a whole," Ms Ley said.

"This facility will not only benefit the local community, but it will foster Australia's strong sporting talent — from our elite athletes right through to kids at the grass roots level."

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre had been planned, designed and constructed with the community in mind and would be available for community use pre and post GC2018.

"Our northern corridor has a large representation of sporting clubs across many codes and this venue is a great asset to help the development of athletes at all sporting levels from grass roots to the elite sector," Mayor Tate said.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Chairman Peter Beattie AC said he was delighted that the first of the new venues was officially open more than 19 months ahead of the Games.

"The fact that the centre is booked with a number of major events already is indicative of the fact that this is a very valuable, early legacy for the community and the city," Mr Beattie said.

"I am confident this sports centre will get a solid workout before GC2018 and provide inspiration for many budding sports enthusiasts from this community who will soon witness the Commonwealth's very best athletes performing in their own backyard during GC2018."

The Coomera Indoor Sports Centre is jointly funded by the Queensland Government and Australian Government. The venue will be owned and operated by the City of Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will run from 4 - 15 April 2018.

One million construction hours clocked in race to build Games Village

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Commonwealth Games Minister Stirling Hinchliffe today got the first look at the finished proto-type apartment for the Parklands Project that will be transformed into the athlete's village for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Premier Palaszczuk said more than 1,800 workers have already been involved in construction on the $550 million Parklands Project that will be home to more than 6,600 athletes and officials when the Games start in 590 days.

"In less than 19 months' time we will welcome thousands of athletes from all over the Commonwealth to the coast as they prepare to compete in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games," the Premier said.

"Now the proto-type apartment has been finished the builders will be able to focus on fine-tuning the finishing touches to ensure the village can be a comfortable home for more than 6,600 athletes and officials.

"The Parklands Project is one of the most significant urban renewal projects ever undertaken on the Gold Coast incorporating seven hectares of residential and retail precincts and seven hectares of parklands and open space.

"The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games is supporting strong jobs growth on the coast, with the Parklands project estimated to support 1,500 full time jobs during design and construction.

"So far more than 1,800 individual workers have played a role in construction of this project clocking up an incredible one million hours of work.

"When the Games start in April 2018, this site will be home to the best athletes and officials from all the Commonwealth countries, but after the curtain closes on the Closing Ceremony workers will get started on converting the site back into residential apartments.

"Apartments in the masterplanned development in the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct will become available to the public for rent from early 2019."

Minister for the Commonwealth Games Stirling Hinchliffe said an apartment proto-type had been developed to ensure quality control across the development.

"We're all going for gold to deliver a great Games and first-class facilities, including a great athlete's quarter," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"By completing a proto-type apartment the developer Grocon is able to ensure quality control before replicating the finishing works across all 1,252 dwellings.

"The proto-type has been fitted out with the final apartment finishes, including kitchen, taps, tiling, painting and carpet.

"It's great to be able to get a feel for the high quality workmanship which we will witness when the project is completed late 2017."

Mr Hinchliffe said South East Queensland businesses had secured 85 of the 91 contracts awarded for the Parklands project, with 45 of the contracts awarded to Gold Coast businesses.

"All contracts for the finishing trades have now been awarded, seven of which will be delivered by Gold Coast businesses in joinery, electrical, painting, tiling, balustrades and benchtops," he said.

Grocon Executive Chairman Daniel Grollo said the Parklands Project would provide a range of housing options, retail, businesses, services and community infrastructure for those working in, studying at and visiting the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct post-Games.

"We're in this for the long term and high quality, sustainable and accessible dwellings are a key part of the legacy we are creating here with the Queensland Government and our partners at Abu Dhabi Investment Council," Mr Grollo said.

"It is great to see the excellence in finish and execution being displayed by those who have built this development, from the Grocon team through to the many and varied sub-contractors and labour, with the predominant bulk of the effort being provided by local people."

In late 2017 Parklands Project will be leased to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) to be transformed into the Commonwealth Games Village during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Grocon will then prepare the development for a mixed use residential community including 1 and 2 bedroom apartments and 3 bedroom townhouses.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will run from 4 - 15 April 2018.

GC2018 leading the way on gender equality

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) will be the first in the history of a major multi-sport Games to have an equal number of men and women's medal events.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Commonwealth Games Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said having a 50/50 split of medal events for men and women was a step in the right direction towards greater social equality and inclusion in sport.

"Several events have been added to the Games program across Weightlifting, Boxing and Cycling, bringing the total number of events to a record-breaking 275 medal sessions," the Premier said.

"This decision sets the standard for greater gender equity in sport and further demonstrates the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and GC2018's commitment to improving equality and inclusion."

The seven events added to the programme, taking the total number of medal events at Gold Coast

2018 to a record-breaking 275 medal events, are:

one additional Women's Weightlifting event (+90kg)
    three new Women's Boxing events (45kg – 48kg, 54 - 57kg and +75kg); and
three new Women's Track Cycling events (Keirin, Team Sprint & Team Pursuit).

Minister Hinchliffe said the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games was set to be the most inclusive Games in history, by also increasing the inclusion of people with disability.

"We're delivering the largest integrated para-sports program in Commonwealth Games history, with more than 300 athletes expected to compete in 38 events, including the marathon and para-triathlon," he said.

"It is a very welcome boost to world sport and more broadly a positive move for inclusion across the board - that has been a long time coming."

"At the 1930 Games in Hamilton, Ontario women competed in just 12 per cent of the total medal events and 88 years later equality will finally be realised on the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Chairman, Peter Beattie AC said gender equality, the largest ever para-sport program, equal medal events across the sport program and focus on inclusivity would prove to be outstanding 2018 Games' legacies.

"The Commonwealth is as culturally diverse as it is geographically which has contributed to an uneven gender ratio in the past, but we've looked at the sports - the team sport offerings and the individual and mixed events - and we've talked to the CGF and the sporting federations and we believe we have got it right this time," Mr Beattie said.

"I am so proud GC2018 will be the first Commonwealth Games in history to present equal medal opportunities for athletes and para-athletes and I am confident the precedent we establish will augur well for future multi-sport events to emulate."

Couriermail --> Kate Jones tipped to replace Stirling Hinchliffe as Commonwealth Games minister

QuoteBUMBLING Palaszczuk Government minister Stirling Hinchliffe is set to be stripped of his Commonwealth Games responsibilities, with Tourism Minister Kate Jones tipped to take back the plum portfolio.

As event organisers prepare to unveil family-friendly ticket prices today, highly placed Government sources told The Sunday Mail that Mr Hinchliffe would be relieved of the Games role as early as this week.

The besieged Transport Minister is tipped to also lose his job as Leader of the House so he can focus on remedying the shortage of train drivers, which has seen hundreds of services cancelled and commuters left furious.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is expected to make a Cabinet reshuffle following the train wreck and last week's resignation of bill-dodging Bundaberg MP Leanne Donaldson, who was fisheries minister.

Mr Hinchliffe replaced the popular Ms Jones as Commonwealth Games minister last December in a Cabinet shake-up.

Tickets to the 2018 Games will start from as little as $10 for children and $20 for adults, organisers have revealed.

In a further incentive for the up to 1.5 million spectators expected for the Games, the tickets will include free public transport to and from venues.

Ms Palaszczuk said the State Government was committed to ensuring the Games were ''affordable and accessible for everyone''.

"GC2018 will be affordable for families," she said. ''That means more people can share in what is sure to be a terrific experience.''

Games chairman Peter Beattie said the ticketing program was ''world-class''.

"We want passionate fans in every seat, so the ticket prices are inclusive, accessible and affordable, to make it easy for everyone to enjoy the Games,'' he said.

"GC2018 is about the future generation and we want as many children as possible to experience the Commonwealth Games."

The prices were welcomed by family and seniors groups.

Former Olympic and Commonwealth Games swimmer and Gold Coast mother of three Samantha Riley said the prices would make it easier for families to attend the Games, which will run from April 4-15.
