Local Government Minister Paul Lucas has signed off on the controversial Caloundra South development.
Mr Lucas made the announcement this morning while visiting Caloundra for the Queensland Mining and Gas Jobs Expo.

Located between Bellvista and Bells Creek, the development will bring up to 50,000 new residents to the southern end of the Sunshine Coast.

"I'm delighted to announce that the State Government has approved the development plan for Caloundra South,'' Mr Lucas told the Journal.

"From the state point of view now this is a green light to proceed with a project that will cater 20,000 homes, 50,000 people living here in the future to do a real thing about affordability on the Sunshine Coast.

"It will be a real boost to the building sector.

"It still has to go through the federal environmental protection approval process, so that must happen before they can take further work in relation to it, but it's a great shot in the arm for the building industry.

"A lot of people on the Sunshine Coast are in the building industry, many of them want to stay here in relation to the resources sector but many of them want to stay here and work in the traditional trades.

"You've got to have projects being approved and this is about doing that.''
