Melbourne Age --> Myki set to be the ticket to ride on airport SkyBus

QuoteGetting to the airport by public transport will soon become a touch easier for travellers, with moves under way to connect the 25-minute SkyBus service to myki.

SkyBus is also set to transform its drab bus interchange at Southern Cross Station into an "airport gateway", complete with flight information screens and facilities for passengers to remotely check-in at Melbourne Airport.

SkyBus' planned switch to myki will make it the only public transport service in Melbourne that offers passengers a choice between using myki or buying a one-off paper ticket, an inflexible arrangement that continues to catch out infrequent users of trains, trams and buses.

Public Transport Victoria was giving little away about the plan, saying only that it "is looking to introduce myki on-board SkyBus services in the future".

The planned switch to the $1.5 billion smart-card system will not bring in cheaper zone-one fares for SkyBus travellers - a one-way trip between Melbourne Airport and Southern Cross Station will still cost $18 ...

Contactless payment coming to myki machines

Added: 23 December 2015

PTV is upgrading myki machines to be EMV (Europay Visa Mastercard) compliant.

myki machines will be upgraded to feature new pin pads with contactless payment capability and EMV compliance for enhanced security.

The upgrade will take place on a rolling basis over early 2016 and will be conducted during off-peak to minimise any possible disruption to customers.

Contactless payment capability will ensure an improved customer experience when using myki machines.

In addition to topping up at a myki machine, customers can also register for auto top up, meaning they will always be ready to travel. You can set up auto top up online.

Auto top up means myki money customers can 'set and forget', with an automatic top up to take place whenever their balance falls below a chosen minimum threshold.

Customers are encouraged to use alternative top up locations such as retail outlets if they would normally top up when the machine at their station is being upgraded.

To find a participating retail outlet near you visit the myki retail outlets page.

Fairer Fines

Its time for Fairer fines - Please take our survey

On December 11th 2015, Public Transport Minister, Jacinta Allan announced a review of public transport infringements including the 18 month-old $75 on the spot fines, handed out by the Authorised Officers that frequent our trains, trams and buses.

After hearing stories of people feeling pressured to pay $75 to avoid receiving a full fine of $223, and waive their right to appeal, Melbourne Barrister Julian Burnside has built up a 40-strong group of pro bono Lawyers who are working hard to defend people who seek to appeal their fines.

We know there are many glitches in the Myki system and often people who receive a fine are caught up in these glitches, or other failings like being unable to buy a ticket on the tram, or innocent mistakes such as forgetting to bring your concession card with you that day.  But instead of having a system that accommodates these issues and allows for people to have their situation reviewed before having to present in court, we presume people are guilty and have to prove otherwise.

Public Transport Users Association and Public Transport Not Traffic will be given the opportunity to submit to this review and we want to hear from PT users about your experiences and issues you have faced when greeted by an Authorised Officer on public transport.

To join the campaign for fairer fines take our short survey and let us know your experience.

Simpler, Fairer And More Effective Fare Enforcement

Minister for Public Transport26 May 2016

The Andrews Labor Government has announced wide-ranging reforms to make Victoria's fare enforcement system more simple, fair and effective.

The changes will abolish on-the-spot penalty fares and create a single infringement system that makes it easier to do the right thing.

Last year the Labor Government announced a review of the enforcement regime it inherited from the former Liberal Government, after wide ranging criticisms from passengers, justice groups and the Victorian Ombudsman.

That review found the enforcement system unfairly punishes those who do the right thing, while rewarding those who deliberately fare evade.

The $75 penalty fare means a passenger can get caught fare evading more than 20 times in one year, and still pay less than the cost of a regular Zone 1 & 2 yearly pass.

Penalty fares are also anonymous, so there is no record kept of serial offenders, meaning the worst fare evaders cannot be identified and targeted.

The review also found the current system is confusing for passengers, who are provided very little information about how the system works or their rights within it.

The new system outlined today provides a clear process for how and when fines can be issued, and how and when they can be challenged.

It will be supported by a range of measures to make it easier for passengers to travel with a valid ticket:

Reducing the time it takes to top up online from 24 hours to 90 minutes
Trialling fast top-up devices on trams stops and major stations
Reviewing concessions and concession IDs, to make the system less confusing
better training and resources for Authorised Officers and other staff in the infringements process

The simpler, fairer and more effective fare enforcement system will begin on 1 January next year, to provide time for staff training, public education and legislative change to bring the changes into force.

For more information about the changes, visit http://economicdevelopment.vic.gov.au/fairer-fare-enforcement

Quotes attributable to Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan

"The system we inherited from the former Liberal Government is confusing, unfair and inequitable. It penalises and intimidates the most vulnerable, while providing an incentive to others to travel without a ticket."

"We know only a very small percentage of people deliberately fare evade – most passengers want to do the right thing and we're making it easier to do that."

"We're making sure the Victoria system is simple, fair and effective for everyone with quicker top-ups, better training and resources for Authorised Officers, and a clearer process for passengers if they get a fine."
