Bus chaos tipped for Gold Coast
Melinda Siegmeier   |  June 27th, 2011

A WHISTLEBLOWER bus driver has warned the Gold Coast's public transport system will be in chaos next month with drivers forced into new routes with little to no training.

The man said all of Surfside Buses' 598 drivers had been given new routes and school bus route numbers had all changed.

He predicted mass confusion when the changes take effect on July 12.

A Transport Workers Union representative said drivers will be forced to speed to keep to the timetable while the anonymous driver said a lack of training on the new routes is likely to lead to drivers quitting.

The new route numbers and driver change-overs will come into effect when almost 100 buses are moved to begin operations from the new Coomera depot.

The bus driver, who asked not to be named for fear of losing his job, said the change will affect every driver.

Members of the public will be inconvenienced because no training had been provided to drivers, he said.

"I suspect about 10 per cent of the workers might quit," he said.

"There is already a 72 per cent staff turnover.

"This big change is not fair on the public.

"We won't be familiar with the routes and the general public will get annoyed with the drivers."

If anything is unfair, I would have thought it is the absence of service improvements this depot should have allowed!

Take a printout of the route home and have a look at it over dinner?
