If the system won't allow using the time when someone touches off to determine if the fare should be peak or off peak then what about the following idea?

1) Off peak fare is charged for those touching on before 6am from stations between Nambour & Elimbah or Varsity Lakes & Ormeau. This will encourage commuters to use one of the first 2 or 3 services - depending on the station where you touch on.

2) Off peak fare is charged on the rest of the Translink network if touching on before 6.30am.

I think that there is an insufficient number of commuters boarding at stations between Rosewood & Thomas Street and travelling to the Brisbane CBD to bother including them in the first category of interurban commuters.

If the system won't allow two cut off times for off peak travel depending on where the touch on occurs, then I think that 6am would be a much better cut off time across the network than 7am.

+1.  At least that gives those who cry poor an option which they cannot refute, although they can say it is unattractive.

Am I one ?
I would hope not.

This is a robust and frank discussion but I do not take any of it personally.
I would hope the same applies to the others contributors.

The issue is that even if a Cleveland line commuter gets on the train at 630 they arent going to arrive till 730 and get off peak, I highly doubt that it cant be reprogrammed to do touch off.

I think I'd prefer that money to go into providing a better % discount for offpeak, rather than getting the programming to recognise pre-morning peak as midday and post-evening peak are already accounted for.

Perhaps basing off-peak on the time of touch on is a throwback to the days of machines or ticket offices issuing hardcopy tickets and this could only work on time of purchase.  However I'm sure that it would be simple reprograming of gocards to calculate the fare based on touch off time and location.

Yes, if you think about it, boarding time is the only chance that bus drivers looked at the ticket so that's what counted.
