QuoteThe South Australian Government will invest $35m for an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system to improve safety on Adelaide's metropolitan rail network.

In handing down the government's 2011-12 budget last week, treasurer Jack Snelling said the $35m over the next four years was part of a $50m investment for new technology that would greatly reduce the risk of train collisions and derailments on the network.
The ATP would do this by ensuring that required speed limits were not exceeded and displayed signals were complied with, Snelling said.

"Although driving of the trains will remain manual, $50m will be spent on an ATP system that, combined with track-side electronic beacons, will continuously monitor and calculate the maximum speed and next required breaking point," he said.
