Hello All,

I looked up the train loading data in light of the issues on the Sunshine Coast services.
These are found here (courtesy ozbob) -> http://www.queenslandrail.com.au/RailServices/City/Fleet/Pages/ice.aspx

I noticed that the ICE train shows a seating capacity of 180 seats for a 3 car service.
All the ICE trains I have ever caught have only 48 (very comfortable) seats (more like recliners) per carriage, and thus a total of 144 seats in a 3 car set.
Am I missing something ?

Hi FF,

ICEs cannot run as 3 car sets in revenue service - you can have 4, 5 or 6 cars, ie 2 "power pairs" with 0-2 trailer cars in the middle.  Assuming 100% fleet utilisation - not likely - you can have 4 ICE-only consists running on the network at once (4 x 4 with the option of having some or all of the 4 'loose' trailer cars split up between those 4 trains ).

I would say the published figures are right for a 4 car set.

You could have more than 4 sets running if you partner an ICE pair with an EMU, but that gives you the worst of both worlds...

42 seats for the driving motor cars and 48 seats for both the motor car and trailer cars.

If they wanted to they could run 8 ICE+EMU sets but why bother as both sets are top speed limited. The minimum they can run (Excluding the ICE+EMU combo) is EMD+EMM+EMM+EMD / 42+48+48+42 which gives you a 180 seating load for a 4 car set.

4 car set - 180 seated (EMD+EMM+EMM+EMD)
5 car set - 228 seated (EMD+EMM+EMT+EMM+EMD)
6 car set - 276 seated (EMD+EMM+EMT+EMT+EMM+EMD)
