Queensland University of Technology's riverside 'back end' is being remodelled to make it more accessible and safer.

New walkways between the Goodwill Bridge, QUT Gardens Point, Brisbane's Botanical Gardens and the Riverstage are promised as part of the plan.

More than 30,000 people come across the Goodwill Bridge into the area every week.

The scheme - a joint project between QUT and Brisbane City Council - was announced in council last night.

Neighbourhood Planning Chairman Amanda Cooper said the project would make the area more attractive to pedestrians and artists and create a unique meeting space for students.

"This project includes the creation of a new public space, able to host both spontaneous and planned activities and events including public art installations," Cr Cooper said.

It is part of council's Vibrant Laneways and Small Spaces Program, and will also aim to improve pedestrian access in the area.

Cr Cooper said the project would make Gardens Point Road from Alice Street to the rear of Parliament House near QUT - near the Riverstage - a more attractive place.

"This is accessed by a surprisingly large number of people," Cr Cooper said.

"It might not be a place that everyone knows about, but it seems there is quite a lot of people walking through that area," she said.

Proposals for the landscaping for the new walkways are currently being designed.

Council also plans to make it easier to get to the Riverstage and is looking for extra state and federal money for this project.

"This entertainment facility has the opportunity to be significantly upgraded as well as providing opportunities for new entertainment purposes."
