If that is true, then it is an act of sheer bastardry, given the proximity to the Tennis Centre and Yeerongpilly so-called TOD.

Of course removal will make re-instatement of a proper 6 car length high level platform easier once we get a Government that cares about public transport and the people of QLD.

Never mind, along the same lines it has become apparent that this Government has no future use, so we can be quite justified in removing it.

Could I say that only fools would not use Tennyson for passenger services too? Is there something that the public has not been advised that makes it necessary to not only remove services from Tennyson, but also demolish the platform.

Think about Ipswich to Tennyson services during the Brisbane International tennis tournament.

Surely, with the rapidly rising population of Ipswich, there will be sufficient demand for regular services using the Tennyson line to South Brisbane as well. This would allow Kuraby services to use CRR. Or should some Redbank or Springfield services use CRR instead if it is physically possible with the recent change to the design?

Going from the recent redesign no Kuraby/Loganlea services can use CRR, and most likely nothing from the Tennyson line could either.  That ultimately does not bother me as much as it used to, given the number of trains that will already be using it from Beenleigh/GC/Flagstone (already 20+ planned in the am peak eventually - there is not room for anything else).  Something from the south has to go via South Bank for capacity reasons, not just to serve Yeronga, Fairfield and Dutton Park, so it may as well be the all-stopper.

That's true, but it will take some time for the demand to build up to that level.

That's not a huge problem.  The existing Yeerongpilly platform is to be retained and you can just transfer - or so the same thing at Roma Street.

I can confirm that as at yesterday, both platforms appeared to still be there.

During one of the consultation sessions the CRR team pointed out that the set up they propose does not have points that would allow trains from Tennyson to access the CRR tunnel, however they pointed out the layout they are proposing does allow for points to be added to allow this (ie: theres nothing physically blocking it, it would just be simply a matter of getting the points and inserting them).

Called into Tennyson, surprise surprise major track work weekend.  Points being removed and new rail being laid.  I wonder if this is to improve reliability/speed?  The old power house sidings were used as refuge siding from time to time by mainly coalies though.

Only proper, if they can run buses of air everywhere, they can run trains that carried a lot of pax surely?  Obviously the bus network is ratsh%t and rail anti-competive, so time to get rail operating as a stand alone network.

Summary:

  • Platform 2 (to Yeerongpilly) shelter removed (foundations remain). Shelter on Platform 1 remains but stripped bare
  • Platform 2 falling apart. Only serviceable by one car
  • All electronics (go card readers, emergency phones, pay phones etc) removed. No CCTV either
  • Completely fenced off

Despite the abysmal condition of platform 2, it is possible for all trains to service only platform 1 if service did resume. In a way that would be best as it would leave one track free for freight and the frequency wouldn't be enough to need a second platform. But that's another story, and with go-card readers removed there's no chance of that happening any time soon, at least until post BaT.

I intended to get a selfie under the station sign with a caption like 'Just waiting for a train...', but it was fenced off all the way around, complete with warning signs. There's no CCTV cameras I could see so I was tempted to just jump the fence but decided against it.

had a yak to the club manager of gailes golf club last week  :P
actually put this idea to him and whats up with having 2 golf courses (wolston park) in fairly close proximity...council actually owns a lot of that land.
he said said the last thing he would want to see is it messed up for residentail development...but i was highlighting the missed opporunity with gailes railway station...didnt seem to fuss him...

I had a friend call me the other day, and he expressed his frustration at the travel time to get from Springfield Central to Yeerongpilly being about an hour with having to change trains at Roma Street. Would be much quicker with a connection at Corinda or Sherwood. Bring back the Tennyson-lander!

104 on 15-minute interpeak frequency between Yeerongpilly and Corinda would have shortened your friend's trip to 38 minutes vs. 53 minutes via Corinda currently (which is still faster than via Roma St). Depending on when he is leaving, the 105 could also be of use.

Personally I would use the 104. Given its low patronage, it would probably be a very nice, fast trip across town, compared to the trundle across the Merivale and having to travel away from your destination in the first place travelling by rail.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

I don't understand the Tennyson obsession with reopening it. There is another station within walking distance. Also when having large crowds, you want them to walk a bit to spread the crowd out and prevent mass crushes from happening.

Ekka is similar .. train shuttles in a class A corridor beats the mess on the roads & the shuttle buses hands down.  Only one platform needed - two which provides easy access to tennis ..

My personal opinion on how the Tennyson Line should be used is have a service run from Darra-Doomben, stopping at Oxley, Corinda, Tennyson, Yerrongpilly and all stations to Doomben.

My reasons:
-gives commuters from the Ipswich/Springfield Lines an easy transfer for a train directly to Park Rd, and more importantly, South Bank and South Brisbane (instead of having to double back from Roma St);
-provide improved cross town access (with GC trains ideally stopping at Yerrongpilly too)
-removes the need to terminate Doomben trains at Roma St or Park Rd
-as well as provide general rail improvements.

The old Tennyson station should not reopen. The platforms were too short, located on a curve which created screeching squeal noise, and being too close to Yeerongpilly it was not well positioned.

A better option is a new station and terminate at Corinda. These services could eventually go to Brisbane airport when CRR opens.

Or, have a new Tennyson Station open on the eastern side of the Softstone St road bridge- straight track and the opportunity for a direct pedestrian connection and open forecourt (if you pardon the pun) to the Tennis Centre.

Either way, the cross town connection from the main western line to the inner southern suburbs (including South Bank and South Brisbane) should be slightly more of a focus of this venture, rather than just looking at Tennyson Station itself.

Not a bad idea, would be a logical line pairing and termination point.

In terms of stopping patterns, make Yeerongpilly the interchange station for Beaudesert and GC trains rather than Salisbury, so that means beaudesert and GC trains run express into CRR and tennyson and loganlea trains run all stops.

Am I correct in thinking the trains coming from the Tennyson loop cannot stop at Yeerongpilly station as the tracks do not align with the platform, just come close ?

Ideally, that would all be fixed up in the process, as well as illogical and ridiculous Corinda-Darra track configuration.

Under the new CRR track layout there is a track that goes to a platform and another track that goes to the DG passing loop on the western side. That particular track has no conflicting moves so in my foamy idea you would build a new fourth track on the dg loop for use by Tennyson trains. I'll try show something diagrammatically of what I mean tomorrow

Off-Peak: just send all of the useless Coopers Plains starters/terminators to run to Darra instead.
Peak: there isn't really a need for the Beenleigh Line to run any more than every 15 mins south of Yeerongpilly. In the AM peak, the Beenleigh Line is all 15 min frequencies, except for a period of time with services every 7-8 mins, departing Yeerongpilly between 7:49 and 8:34 (a mix of 4 Beenleigh, 2 Kuraby and 1 Coopers Plains starters). The GC line is mostly 15 min services, with an extra 2 services thrown in that pass Yeerongpilly before the Beenleigh 7.5 min frequencies start.

So (during AM peak between Yeerongpilly and Park Rd) if inbound Beenleigh/Tennyson trains ran on the western track from Yeerongpilly to Park Rd (with the new platforms to be built with CRR), inbound GC line services on the middle track, and any outbound services on the eastern track, the only real conflicts are Tennyson/Darra services crossing from Yeerongpilly onto the Tennyson line and any remaining merge conflicts at Park Rd/South Brisbane.

In the PM, the eastern track should run GC line services, middle being the southbound all-stoppers and western being an northbound services. Once again, the GC Line only runs an extra 2 services on top of the 15 min frequencies, with the Beenleigh Line also having an extra 2 services somewhere in amongst them.

Obviously, the current set up isn't ideal (with just 3 tracks) and would require some works to be done in terms of track configurations and platforms to improve efficiencies. But, it's not really dreaming, it genuinely could happen in line with CRR if they put any thought into it. By having the Beenleigh Line run only every 15 mins during peak south of Yeerongpilly, you use those train slots instead on Tennyson line services towards Darra.

Tennyson station itself is already partially demolished.  Only 1x 3-car length platform still stands with the entrances barricaded off.

Can't see the Queensland Government willing to spend the money on re-opening the station at this location at the very least (if at all).

Here's my idea for a reopened Tennyson line. Mind you it's a bit foamy as obviously the State Govt. has bigger fish to fry. But I believe that the Tennyson line will be (operationally) easier than ever once 1) Cross River Rail opens, providing a dedicated conflict-free track at Yeerongpilly and 2) Inland Rail opens, reducing freight traffic from the Tennyson line.

CORINDA STATION
Currently has a platform totally unused for the Tennyson line ready to go. Completely free of conflicts from the Springfield and Ipswich lines


SHERWOOD EAST STATION
Admittedly this is the foamiest part of my idea, but this spot at the Sherwood Road overpass near the Parklands development seems ripe for a TOD....


TENNYSON STATION
The existing station is too short, on a curve, and mostly demolished. A new station on the straight section just east of the Softstone Road overpass would be a suitable location.


YEERONGPILLY STATION
As you can see by the new track layout from the CRR documents, there will be a short, dedicated track coming from the Tennyson line that would be completely conflict free from Gold Coast and Beenleigh line trains. A new platform on the western side closest to Fairfield road also seems feasible within the existing rail corridor.
