Sydney Morning Herald --> Sydney Metro hit with $200m bill for prime Parramatta CBD land $

QuoteSydney Metro has been ordered to pay $201 million to Parramatta City Council for a prime CBD spot for its planned underground station – more than double its initial offer – in the latest fight over fair compensation for land acquired for the multibillion-dollar project.

The council sought $312 million for the prized land after it was compulsorily acquired in March 2021 for the Metro West rail line between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD. It filed proceedings against Sydney Metro in 2022, objecting to the amount of compensation it was offered.

In a decision last week, the NSW Land and Environment Court ruled the council was entitled to $201,417,049 for the land bounded by George, Macquarie, Church and Smith streets. Sydney Metro had paid the council $11.5 million for a smaller adjoining parcel of land in May 2022.

Premier Chris Minns said on Sunday the extra money that would have to be stumped up for the property would not result in an increase in the overall cost of Metro West or delay the line's 2032 opening because it was within project contingencies. ....

Sydney Morning Herald --> Meltdown in train tunnel a key factor behind shelving of metro's August 4 opening $

QuoteThe planned opening of a $21.6 billion metro rail line which promises to reshape Sydney has been shelved, with a recent meltdown which trapped passengers on trains in tunnels for more than two hours emerging as a key cause of the "disappointing" delay.

The line underneath Sydney Harbour and the central business district was due to open on Sunday but the incident on a separate stretch of tunnel on July 13 - combined with industrial action from the state's powerful firefighters' union and a failure to secure an expected green light from a national regulator - has detonated the much-hyped August 4 start date. ...

Sydney Morning Herald --> Passengers on Sydney's new metro line surge beyond opening day numbers $

QuoteAbout 55,000 passengers travelled on Sydney's new extended metro rail line under the harbour in the morning peak on Tuesday, an increase of more than a third on opening day, amid strong commuter flows from the north into the city centre on driverless trains.

More than 190,000 passengers travelled on the M1 line on Monday when the 15.5-kilometre extension between Chatswood and Sydenham opened after seven years of construction. The figures include the 36-kilometre section between Tallawong and Chatswood, which opened five years ago. ...

Sydney really does look like becoming the first Australian city where owning a car makes little sense if you live in the inner city. North Sydney is now so well tied into the city and the northern suburbs. The jump in use once really world class transport infrastructure goes in is just so predictable and yet it's always questioned.

Daily Telegraph --> Sydney rolling on with the new Metro as Melbourne stalls at the unbuilt station $

QuoteIt is a tale of two cities – one brightly celebrating an economic boom on the back of a new $21 billion Metro and the other stalled amid the half finished plans for an unbuilt airport line.

As almost 200,000 jumped on board the Sydney Metro that is predicted to bring $11 billion a year in economic activity, Melbourne was lamenting an extra $2 billion cost for yet another delay to its long awaited Melbourne Airport Rail Link. ...

As if we needed another reason to rave about Sydney's shiny new metro system, it turns out that it's not just Australia's largest public transport, but also its most accessible. All of the eight new stations along the Sydney Metro City line have been designed to seamlessly accommodate parents with prams, people in wheelchairs and those with other accessibility requirements, and a group of guide dogs have already tested it out to confirm. ...

Sydney Morning Herald --> Secret report reveals multibillion-dollar cost of metro extensions in Sydney's east and west $

QuoteAn extra train station at Rosehill racecourse for the Metro West rail line will cost the state government up to $2.2 billion, according to a highly confidential review into Sydney's mega rail projects which warns about the contamination risk in the area near Parramatta.

Weeks after a metro line under central Sydney was opened, the review also reveals the staggering cost of extending metro lines in western Sydney and to the city's east, estimating it will cost about $9.3 billion to build a line and four stations between St Marys and Schofields via Marsden Park.

The cost of a southern extension of the under-construction Western Sydney Airport metro line from the new city of Bradfield to Oran Park is put at $5.1 billion. The estimate is based on building three stations. ...

As a nation we have to work out why the cost escalation has made building things unfeasible. There is no way it should be costing >$2B to build a single station.

SilverChased

I imagine the costs are due to our high wages, high safety standards, material costs, engineering costs and the costs associated with accessibility.

They have photos in the new NGR trains (in Brisbane) of how work had been done in the past with a couple of workers and no regard for safety. It is also quite visible where the money is spent when comparing the before and after on some of these station upgrades. They are enormous now!

Those new Sydney Metro stations are even a level above.
