This may not, at first, seem to be a train song, but perhaps it should be.  An explanation is required.  As I have been strutting about in my newly-acquired 'Duplicate the Sunshine Coast Line' T-shirt, the music of the film epic A Bridge Too Far comes to mind.

It was one of those WWII recreation epics that tells of the failed military campaign, called Operation Market Garden, involving thousands of paratroops overshooting the German army, then occupying The Netherlands, to hold a series of key bridges that the Nazis most likely would blow up in retreat, but were required for an advancing Allied army led by tanks.  As the paratroops fought to hold the bridges, including the key structure at Arnhem, a line of Allied tanks sought to run down the narrow road linking the bridges to cross at Arnhem on the third day.

However, the road to Arnhem wass only a single highway linking the various key bridges - trucks and tanks had to squeeze to the shoulder to pass. The situation reminds me so much of the single line track heading north to the Sunny Coast.  Operation Market Garden had to be abandoned because of the supply line logistics.

Today a trip by train heading north to the Sunshine Coast is a bit of adventure of sorts.  Not even Santa can reliably catch the train to Nambour.  QR refuses to carry him there.
And so, the Sunshine Coast line becomes our 'bridgehead too far.'



PS:  The movie was made in 1977 and starred every major Hollywood and British actor of the day (see YouTube clip).  It cost $22 million to make and would cost at least 10 times that amount today, just as the duplication of the Sunshine Coast Line will cost so much more in 2031 than if this piece of public infrastructure were built today.

Maybe RailBOT should obtain rights to the Bridge Too Far soundtrack and do a deal – T-shirt and DVD as a boxed Christmas gift.  The music was written by a John Addison, another connection perhaps.
