Drivers 'risking death' on level crossings

Queensland Rail says people are risking death if they disobey traffic signs at rail crossings.

A survey commissioned by the Australasian Railway Association shows a quarter of people do not follow traffic signs at crossings, even if they can see a train approaching.

The survey also found one in five did not know they had even crossed a rail-line, until after the event.

The survey also found 18 to 25-year-olds were more aware of rail crossing rules than older drivers and pedestrians.

Queensland Rail's Tony Lucas says half of the crossing accidents happen when boom gates are down and lights are flashing.

"Never get complacent in and around where there are road-rail crossings, always be cautious and vigilant no matter how many times you have been over that area," he said.

"Our information indicates 98 per cent of incidents are rail crossings can be attributed to driver or road user behaviour.

"Most incidents occur during daylight hours, in fine weather, on straight sections of road and when conditions are very good with adequate warning systems in place for those rail crossings"
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...
