THE Baillieu Government will begin investigating options for a rail link to Melbourne Airport within weeks.

Transport Minister Terry Mulder said the Melbourne Airport Rail Link Study would start in June and be completed by the end of 2012.

The study is part of a pre-election pledge to spend $6.5 million in the first term of government planning a new rail project linking the city with the airport.

Mr Mulder said the study would investigate developing the rail link as part of an east coast high-speed rail link. He also said his department had started investigating a rail link to Avalon Airport.

"The rail link is to include rail connections leaving the Melbourne to Geelong rail line between Little River and Lara stations to allow trains from both Geelong and Southern Cross stations to travel to and from Avalon on a new single-track rail line," Mr Mulder said.
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...
