Something useful might be to change the bus stop name "Mains Road at Altandi" to "Mains Rd - Altandi Station" or just "Altandi Station". The bus stop could get orange bus wrap sign that says Altandi Station, and the road leading to the station could be renamed Altandi Station Road instead of Shearwin St.

In the 2014 RBOT New Bus Network Proposal, the key interchange points (KIPs) were introduced, with these bus stops being distinct from other usual bus stops.

I think it's time to look at that KIP stop design / presentation again.

I'm increasingly of the opinion that buzzwords and catchy names are just fluff.  The 700 doesn't need special branding to carry 2.5m people a year, just corridor rationalisation and high frequency of service attached to that route number.  These things take care of themselves.

SEQ: Call for the establishment of a park 'n' ride taskforce

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport passengers said the park 'n' ride paradigm throughout SEQ is confused and broken, lacks an overall coherent strategy and is information poor and inaccurate.

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"Increasingly there are calls from commuters and politicians for more park 'n' ride at various railway stations and in support of bus and even ferry. There is a lack of overall coordination and no real strategy in terms of management, policy and best practice outcomes for park 'n' ride in SEQ."

"It is not possible to keep expanding park 'n' ride indefinitely.  It is much too expensive.  For example, the recent announcement of a further 650 car parking spaces at Springfield Central station at a cost of $44.5 million works out for a cost of $68,000 per car parking space (1).  $44.5 million to 2/3 fill a train. Hardly sustainable in the big picture."

"Some park 'n' ride is needed, but more emphasis must be placed on improving feeder (station) bus networks and better support for active transport options particularly bicycle and pedestrian, and encouraging commuters to use these modes."

"Another example of poor overall strategy. Altandi station precinct is having problems with overflow parking in residential streets (2).  Parking overflow blocks streets, driveways, and contributes to local road congestion and the quality life of the local community suffers. Some additional park 'n' ride is clearly warranted at Altandi as Altandi station is one of the limited stops for the Gold Coast line express services so it is a particularly attractive option for commuters.  A proper park 'n' ride strategy would have factored this in when the timetable was changed in 2014 and assured that adequate park 'n' ride together with improved feeder and active transport was done in concurrence. "

"A jurisdiction that does park n' ride well is Perth WA ( https://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/parking ).  They charge a small fee for their park n' ride of $2 daily, but importantly they have excellent feeder bus services.  People have a real alternative.  The parking charge helps keep the parking rationed to a degree and the overall outcome is much better for residents and commuters."

"Due to the poor nature of feeder bus services in SEQ generally, it would not be appropriate at present to charge a fee for park 'n' ride, but as better feeder station services become established, and TransLink are keen to use to the go card for parking management, it would be an easy thing to do in time (3).  Such revenue could then be feed back into improving feeder bus services and maintaining the park 'n' ride facilities."

"It is time to change the mindless paradigm of just expanding parking spaces.  We need to be a lot smarter. A park 'n' ride taskforce could finally develop an overall policy and strategy for sorting out the parking mess! Parking is not really free."

TOD is an option. That allows people to live near the station and walk there rather than take their car.

TMR still needs to work out where the cars are coming from via numberplate matching.

There is a case for spray painted parking bays and car park charges.

I suspect locals want (a) cars banned from public streets and (b) no TOD near them but the street is public land and if people cannot live near

the station, it is entirely logical they drive in - hence the issue we have now.

Re: MR - SEQ: Call for the establishment of a park 'n' ride taskforce

Good Morning,

Strong response to our Facebook post on this issue here >  https://www.facebook.com/RAILBackOnTrack/posts/2245830062097835

It should be clear to all that we need to sort park 'n' ride out once and for all.  Better access to rail stations and transit hubs by local station buses and active transport options must be prioritised now.

This park 'n' ride policy failure is just another example why we need a proper public transport authority to get on top of the myriad of issues that is now the hallmark of failed transport policy.  Where is the integrated public transport model that the Government and its stakeholders have been considering?  Been pushed into the too hard basket already?  It is time for real action!

Best wishes,
Robert

Letters to the Editor: Quest Community News

QuoteThank you Southern Star

On behalf of the residents of the Altandi precinct and the 250+ commuters who have to park on the streets I would like to acknowledge Kristy Muir's report "Altandi Station parking outrage" (September 20) for bringing this to the attention of RACQ and resulting in the RACQ Media Release "Park 'n' Ride priority at Altandi, urging State Government and TransLink to prioritise a Park'n'Ride expansion at Altandi Station. Thank you for your interest and concern for the community. It is an assurance to know that someone is listening and recognises this issue.

Chris Seen, APCPAG spokesperson

Altandi Station woes

On the need for improved commuter parking at Altandi, we agree wholeheartedly with your article and the RACQ. As a property owner in Altandi, we find it is impossible to park outside of our own property and, importantly in our case, its impossible for our maintenance and repair contractors to park conveniently to attend to the property at Altandi which we need to keep in good repair for our tenants.

The residents' group is to be commended for their efforts and this outcome even though this should undoubtedly be the role of the local State Member. I made a phone query to that office but found a lack of empathy over this matter. It has been left to the residents but they are doing an excellent job and I thank the paper for publicising the ongoing issue.

Brisbanetimes --> Where Brisbane's new park and ride stations will be built from 2019

QuoteThe locations for more than 2300 new park and ride spaces in south-east Queensland have been confirmed, with Springfield set to be the biggest beneficiary of the state government spend.

Those spaces are in addition to a new park and ride station near the new State Netball Centre at Mt Gravatt, which will have 680 park and ride spaces when it opens later this month.

The biggest expansion of an existing park and ride station is at Springfield Central, where $44.5 million will be spent expanding the 492 existing car spaces to 1142.

The Springfield project has gone out to tender to architects and plans, likely to include a multi-storey car park, were due back before Christmas.

Work is likely to start early in 2019.

The new park and rides spots and the number of spaces for commuters are:

Cannon Hill train station. Cost: $3.4 million . Early design stage. Spaces to increase from 168 to 240.
Darra train station. Cost: $8.8 million. Early planning, stakeholder engagement stage. Spaces to increase from 261 to 441.
Ebbw Vale train station. Cost: $2.6 million. Detailed design stage. Spaces to increase from 97 to 167.
Eight Mile Plains bus station. Cost: $4.5 million. Detailed planning stage. Spaces to increase from 858 to 1058.
Geebung train station. Cost: $3.1 million. Consultation stage. Spaces to increase from 36 to 92.
Greenbank. Cost: $21 million. Early planning stage. Spaces to increase from 242 to 842.
Lawnton train station. Cost: $10.4 million. Consultation stage. Spaces to increase from 165 to 415.
Lindum train station. Cost: $5 million. Consultation stage. Spaces to increase from 141 to 211.
Murrarie train station. Cost: $7.3 million. Early planning stage. Spaces to increase from 98 to 130.
Ormeau train station. Cost: $2.1 million. Detailed design stage. Spaces to increase from 270 to 340.
Salisbury train station. Cost: $14.5 million. Site being investigated, business plan to follow. Spaces to increase from 52 to 352.
Springfield Central train station. Cost: $44.5 million. Out to tender. Spaces to increase from 492 to 1142.
Virginia train station. Cost: $2.3 million. Consultation stage. Spaces to increase from 20 to 70.

State Transport Minister Mark Bailey said several other existing park and ride centres would also expand.

"A new multi-storey park 'n' ride is being constructed at Mains Road next to the new State Netball Centre," Mr Bailey said.

"When that facility opens later this month, there will be over 680 park 'n' ride spaces available for commuters.

"At Murarrie train station, the first stage of park 'n' ride expansion delivered almost 50 new car parks earlier this year.

"The second stage is set to begin construction, with around 130 new car parks to be ready by mid-2019."

New park and ride places were a 2017 election promise by the Palaszczuk government.

There were already 30,000 park and ride stations at 139 locations around TransLink's south-east Queensland network of buses and ferries.

A TransLink spokesman said it was no longer government policy to restrict park to outside a certain radius from Brisbane's CBD.

TransLink was investigating several other sites for potential park and ride locations with the department of Transport and Main Roads.

"It is not always possible to acquire suitable land to expand existing park 'n' ride facilities," a TransLink spokesman said.

"In considering locations, TMR assesses the likely impact that a park 'n' ride development would have on the local transport network, economic development and future land use outcomes."

Mr Bailey said some locations were simply not suitable for new car parks.

"It is not financially viable, sustainable or even physically possible, at some public transport stations, to build new car parks or provide a car park for every single commuter," he said.

Is 8MP really needed? The busway extension to Springwood should relieve the pressure here enough that this cost should be going towards the it over a few more spaces.

Those figures are astouding. Why isn't the opposition government jumping up and down about this huge waste. Northgate is already established, so should be reason enough to ditch Virginia and Geebung. If more has to be built, why can't it be on some cheaper land like at Bindha? Bus Reform, not this crap

Imagine if these car spaces were replaced by half the number of homes? (Half because 2 people can live in apartment)

Wouldn't cost anything, would generate revenue, and give the same patronage.

I hope QR is offering valet parking at Murrarie station!

Can someone else double check that calculation? $200 000+ per space seems unbelievable!

Time for paid park 'n' ride in SEQ

Greetings,

Brisbanetimes has published an article Where Brisbane's new park and ride stations will be built from 2019

The details (edited) are below.  The costs are considerable (near on a quarter of a million dollars per parking space at Murrarie!) and is not going to make a real difference in the end.  What will is improving ways passengers can get to and from stations by other modes.  Feeder bus networks need a radical improvement and better support for active transport.  Park 'n' ride is not really coordinated well and politics often dominates priorities over real need and commonsense.  Park 'n' ride expansion attracts even more cars and leads to more congestion and worsening overflow parking in streets!

It is clear that SEQ must move to a paid park 'n' ride model to ration parking and help get people onto other modes.  Perth WA has had paid park 'n' ride since 2014.  A daily $2 charge is paid by linking Smartrider ( (the equivalent of our go card)  or pay 'n' display  see https://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/parking  This works very well in Perth, as Perth does have good feeder bus networks.

An important perquisite to the introduction of paid park 'n' ride is to make sure passengers do have a real alternative, this means the feeder bus networks must be improved first with better active transport support. The revenue then from the parking can be used to offset maintenance and put into more services.

Best wishes,

Robert

8 miles is packed in the morning and there's a lot of overflow onto surrounding streets too. I'm not sure 200 extra spaces is enough. A lot of these spaces are taken up by out of towners than people in surrounding suburbs.
Alternatively another common sense solution is to build a new station in between Springwood and 8MP.

I know it's full each day but it is a fair assumption to make that most of the cars at 8MP come from the Logan region. So with the busway extension to Springwood and new station at Rochedale, there will be higher walk-up patronage generated and the opportunity to implement feeder buses.

This should then leave 8MP parking for anyone coming off the Gateway northbound/Pacific Mwy inbound.

I agree that there should be more spaces but I feel that the busway extension should be built first, then have these extra spaces added if required.

#Metro

One of the issues with the busway was that the busway went on first, TOD was an afterthought.

IIRC there was an attempt to place TOD around Holland Park West but local residents resisted it.

The TOD development out at Ferny Grove demonstrates that demand isn't limited to inner city locations. Special TOD zoning should be applied around rail and busway stations automatically.

Using data in : www.busvic.asn.au/images/uploads/links/2018_BusVic_Moving_People_Victoria.pdf
(Figure 3) and a quick calculation a feeder bus doing 10km run, 50 times per day would cost around $750K to run for 50 weeks on weekdays (infrastructure and recurrent costs). This feeder could move 3000 people per day. I think that stacks up quite well.

The thing is, almost every comment on Albo's tweet is saying "this is wrong, we need more public/active transport options". Or something along those lines.

If you really wanted to do something for the people, just listen to what the community and experts are saying. They are right. Is it really that hard?

Couriermail Quest --> Congested streets lead Labor to announce parking plans

QuotePARKING at Northgate rail station is a nightmare for commuters, who say you need to get in early or be prepared for a long walk.

But relief may be in sight, with Labor announcing plans for a new $7 million multi-storey car park if elected at the next federal election.

The announcement was made on today by Member for Lilley Wayne Swan, Labor candidate for the seat Anika Wells and Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development Anthony Albanese.

The LNP was contacted for a comment but did not respond by close of business today.

Wavell Heights resident Kelly Hurford, who drives to Northgate Station to park and catch the train, said it was impossible to find a park after 8.30am on weekdays.

"If I have a late appointment I usually can't get a park," she said.

"You have to park a mile away which is not ideal, especially if you're coming back at night."

"I am a big supporter of public transport and if there are more parks, more people will be able to use it," Ms Hurford said.

Virginia resident Rosie Campbell agreed there was a need for more parking spaces.

"I have been using the Northgate station for the last 18 months and I find you have to get in quite early," she said.

"I get in around 6.20am and there aren't very many parks.

"After 7.30am you have to be prepared to walk about half a street to get to the station. They'd have to add so much more parking but I'm all for it."

Ms Wells said she a multi-storey carpark was needed to accommodate the large number of people wanting to park at the station and to ease congestion in surrounding streets.

"Something like 750 people come through here every day from as far as Redcliffe to park and there are only 377 parking spaces, so we know we've got to go up with a multi-storey carpark," she said.

"We will be working on plans for this with the Queensland Government if Labor is elected."

The plans to upgrade Northgate station come after Labor's announcement for Cross River Rail which includes a $2.4 billion upgrade to the Queensland rail network.

Mr Albanese said the station was the third, after Mango Hill and Narangba, in what would be a series of announcements to improve parking on Brisbane's northside as part of Labor's $300 million National Park and Ride Fund.

"Labor, federally, will deliver $7 million for the upgrading of parking facilities here at Northgate," he said.

"It's a priority for a range of reasons. We know that some 36 per cent of commuters who travel into the city from this station come from the surrounding suburbs.

"We know that Park 'n' Ride facilities are very important for increasing access to public transport and we know that this is particularly the norm in growing cities, such as here in Brisbane."

Mr Swan said the station was in desperate need of the upgrade.

"Just look around the streets here in Northgate, they are absolutely crowded with cars that are parked by people walking up to the station, so this Park'n'Ride is desperately needed here, right now," he said.

There is currently a partial closure involving 10 parking spaces at one of the four Park 'n' Ride sites at the station due to the construction of a new Queensland Police Service outpost, which has made parking even harder.

I think building a new carpark at Northgate is just insanity.

What is the reason for it? Could not the $7 mil be spent on improving bus access to the station instead? Why is a Virginia resident driving to Northgate station to catch the train? Why are people from Redcliffe driving to Northgate to catch the train FFS?

If new parking is built, it must be paid! Even $2/day for GO Card holders would be a good start. Exemptions for disability parking permit holders.

Places like Narangba I kind of understand as the surrounding area is very spread out and some of it quite difficult to service with buses (poor planning in retrospect, but hard to fix now) but Northgate? Ridiculous!

The politicians think that promising more park 'n' ride is a vote winner.   They don't get that infinite expansion of park 'n' ride is simply not achievable, or desirable.

It is just making it all degrees worse in the end.

This is how govt policy is actually made.

Forget about experts, due consideration, process. It all comes down to "how do I keep my seat?".

IMHO we need to push for PAID parking. Otherwise we will have an explosion of car parks at $60 000 a pop and still poor bus and train services.
Negative people... have a problem for every solution. Posts are commentary and are not necessarily endorsed by RAIL Back on Track or its members.

At $7m and $60k/spot, you will only get 118 extra parks - or 1/10th of one peak-hour train.

The reason Northgate is parked out is because the rail service elsewhere on the Northside is either unreliable, infrequent or both - and don't even start talking about the bus service. It's a shame that yet more knee-jerk policy is being introduced, rather than proper bus network reform and a more integrated, reliable network pursued.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Daniel Bowen --> Melbourne's station parking problem

Interesting read, some relevance to the situation here in SEQ.
