Interest sought for Coorparoo Junction revitalisation

The Bligh Government today called for Expressions of Interest to develop the Coorparoo Junction Transit Oriented Development (TOD).

Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Stirling Hinchliffe joined State Member for Greenslopes Cameron Dick today to make the announcement as part of the southside Community Cabinet meeting.

Mr Hinchliffe said he wanted to see the Coorparoo Junction TOD become a landmark development in Brisbane.

"Once developed, the site will boast residential housing, as well as commercial space to support a vibrant retail precinct – and the whole site is to be integrated with the planned Coorparoo Junction busway station," he said.

"Importantly, this vibrant hub will stimulate the local economy, build investor confidence and bring a much-needed facelift to the site.

"The development will also help deliver on Brisbane City Council's plans for the Eastern Corridor."

Feedback from the community representatives and other participants at the Queensland Growth Management Summit indicated that the redevelopment of key urban sites such as this one at Coorparoo Junction would be fundamental to creating a vibrant Brisbane for the future.

Member for Greenslopes Cameron Dick said seeking expressions of interest was a significant step in the revitalisation of the Coorparoo Junction precinct.

"The Junction has always been an important commercial hub and this next stage will allow it to recapture its former glory," Mr Dick said.

"The site will be an integrated development, allowing people to choose to live and work close to facilities and services, as well as reducing their reliance on car travel.

"We will be looking to a developer to deliver a first-class concept to ensure the site is an exciting place for locals to live, work, relax and be entertained."

Expressions of interest are expected from companies and consortia with experience in the construction, design and development of large-scale infrastructure and mixed-use developments.

Expressions of interest open today and close on Friday, 18 March 2011.

Once all expressions of Interest are received, a shortlist of candidates will be asked to provide concept designs.

The 1.25ha Coorparoo Junction TOD site is located on the corner of Old Cleveland Road and Cavendish Road at Coorparoo.

This is a wonderful case of "everything old is new again", or "how to spend lots of money building stuff we already had and threw away".

Coorparoo Junction draws its name from the junction of two tram lines - the Cavendish Road line came off Old Cleveland Road there.

The concentration of shops at the junction reflects its former importance as a junction of two tram lines, so it was a TOD before anyone though of the term.

Finally, the eastern busway reprises the route of the long vanished tram line, and the tunnel on the first part of the eastern busway passes directly under O'Keefe Street, along which ran the very last section of tramway ever built in Brisbane.
