Limited public transport running

Limited public transport services will run across Brisbane [Thursday, January 13].

TransLink chief executive Peter Strachan said key bus services and hourly train services would operate to provide essential travel in and out of Brisbane's CBD where it was safe to do so.

"We're putting these services on to ensure key staff who are essential for services and flood response have travel options. It's not for sight-seers," Mr Strachan said.

"But be aware - if you come into town on public transport there's every chance you may face delays getting in and may not be able to get home.

"We will rely on our existing high-frequency network to provide a basic level of bus service where possible.

"Trains will continue to run each hour until flooding starts to impact services.

"We continue to operate public transport services where possible, however customers should continue visit the TransLink website www.translink.com.au to ensure they have the latest information before they travel."

Mr Strachan said the following buses would run in Brisbane tomorrow - every 30 minutes where possible:

   * 111 - Eight Mile Plains
   * 130 - Algester
   * 140 - Parkinson
   * 150 - Browns Plains
   * 200 - Carindale
   * 333 - Chermside
   * 345 - Aspley
   * 385 - The Gap

Other service disruptions for tomorrow include:

   * No buses to Brisbane's western and south-western suburbs (400 series and 104/105 buses)
   * Limited bus services, diversions, delays and cancellations in some regions, particularly across Brisbane, Ipswich and the Bribie Island region
   * CityCat and CityFerry services cancelled
   * Disruptions on the Ipswich, Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines

The first trains for the morning peak will depart at the following times:

   * Airport - 5:56am
   * Beenleigh - 5:48am
   * Caboolture - 4:57am
   * Cleveland - 5:33am
   * Ferny Grove - 6:23am
   * Ipswich - 5:21am
   * Shorncliffe - 6:20am
   * Varsity Lakes - 5:43am
   * Rail buses will run on the Doomben line from 6:33am
   * Services will operate every two hours from Nambour from 6:47am on the Sunshine Coast line

Callers to the TransLink Call Centre number 13 12 30 are advised the Call Centre is receiving a very high volume of calls from customers, resulting in extended delays in answering calls.

Public transport services to increase

Thursday 13 January 2011

Additional public transport service will be available across Brisbane tomorrow as floodwaters recede and roads reopen.

TransLink chief executive Peter Strachan said Brisbane Transport would operate a modified Sunday bus timetable while Queensland Rail services would continue to operate hourly in and out of Brisbane's CBD where it was safe to do so.

"We are continuing to increase services to assist people to move around the city and to ensure staff who are essential for services and the flood response have travel options," Mr Strachan said.

"Tomorrow we will be able to operate more than 160 routes across Brisbane on a Sunday timetable, however another 25 regular routes remain suspended.

"We are still unable to access roads in the western suburbs, around Toowong, Indooroopilly, University of Queensland and West End, while there are some impacts to services around Toombul and New Farm."

Queensland Rail will be operating an hourly service on most lines and half hourly services to Brisbane Airports.

All private operators will operate normal weekday timetable with some diversion in place for service running into the Brisbane area.

Other service information for tomorrow:

    * CityCat and CityFerry services remain suspended until further notice.
    * Ipswich bus and FlexiLink services will return to normal, with some diversions in place.
    * NightLink services in Brisbane – which operate between approximately 1-5am on Saturday morning – will be cancelled.

"We continue to operate public transport services where possible, however customers should continue to visit the TransLink website on www.translink.com.au to ensure they have the latest information before they travel," Mr Strachan said.

"Not all routes have Sunday timetable, so it's important that customers check the website before travelling."

The following routes will remain suspended due to the impacts of the flooding:

    * all 400 series (Brisbane's western suburbs),
    * 116 (Rocklea to Valley),
    * 300 (Toombul to Cultural Centre),
    * 301 (Toombul to Cultural Centre),
    * 196 (Fairfield Gardens to Wickham St),
    * 197 (Fairfield Gardens to Merthyr),
    * 198 (Mollison (West End) St to Mater Hospital),
    * 199 (West End Ferry to New Farm),
    * and Cityglider (West End Ferry to New Farm).

The following routes will operate with diversions on a Sunday timetable to avoid road closures and flooded areas:

    * 174 (Garden City to Valley),
    * 175 (Garden City to Valley),
    * 184 (Garden City to Valley via Cavendish Rd),
    * 185 (Garden City to Valley via Cavendish Rd),

An important message from Campbell - January 13

Make no mistake, Brisbane is experiencing its greatest natural crisis in over a hundred years. Unlike the flood in 1974, the existence of the Wivenhoe Dam has helped absorb the vast majority of the floodwaters. If not for Wivenhoe we would have faced flooding the likes of which we cannot comprehend.

As I write this the flood is peaking at around 4.2 meters. At 4am this morning, the peak measured 4.46 metres. Although it was less than the 1974 flood, almost 12,000 residential properties and 2,500 commercial properties were flooded. The damage bill is enormous and tomorrow Brisbane will begin the massive clean-up operation and we need your support.

The Brisbane suburbs worst impacted by the flooding include: Brisbane City, St Lucia, West End, Rocklea, Graceville, Chelmer, Oxley, Fairfield, Toowong, South Brisbane, New Farm, Yeronga, Milton, Sherwood, Jindalee, Tennyson, Auchenflower, Sinnamon Park, Archerfield, Windsor, Taringa, Westlake, Fig Tree Pocket, Indooroopilly, Newstead, Sumner, Bulimba, Corinda, Coopers Plains, Albion, Norman Park, Paddington, Kenmore, East Brisbane, Coorparoo, Bellbowrie, Yeerongpilly, Riverhills, Woolloongabba, Seventeen Mile Rocks, Hawthorne, Darra, Moorooka, Bowen Hills, Pinkenba, Middle Park, Balmoral, Kangaroo Point, Mount Ommaney, Hamilton, Acacia Ridge, Highgate Hill, Willawong, Anstead, Jamboree Heights, Fortitude Valley, Salisbury, Hemmant, Greenslopes, Wacol, Chapel Hill, Herston, Brookfield, Pinjarra Hills, Karana Downs, Durack and Pullenvale.

Today I announced a detailed plan to tackle the massive clean-up operation. Brisbane will be divided into five areas with the initial priority on opening major roads and cleaning up debris left by retreating floodwaters. That way we can ensure safe access to your property.

There is still a considerable amount of water coming down the Brisbane River so beware. The first properties that flooded are likely to be the last properties from which flood waters will recede.

My message to people who abandoned their homes is not to be in any hurry to return to them. We first need to open transport routes to enable access. Also be careful with electricity. You should have a qualified electrician to clear your home of danger before you seek to use electrical equipment.

We desperately need anyone who owns a bobcat, dump truck, front-end loader, water tanker or other heavy equipment to give us a hand with the clean-up. Please don't bother to offer if you are seeking payment. We are after genuine volunteers who want to help and we will promptly respond to advise you where you should take your equipment.

For those that can offer their services please email lordmayor@brisbane.qld.gov.au or contact Council on 07 3403 8888.

Other volunteers should email their services or phone Volunteering Queensland on 07 3002 7600. You can also register online at www.volunteeringqld.org.au

My advice is you should first help those closest to where you live; neighbours, family, friends and people in the same suburb. If you are in a suburb that has not been affected by floodwaters, or you have no one to help, please contact us and we will tell you where to report to for assistance.

Buses
A limited number of bus services will be available tomorrow running about every 30 minutes in and out of the city. Do not use these services if you are not coming into the CBD for work or to help with the clean-up. These services are being put on to ensure key staff essential for services and flood response have travel options, with all other residents encouraged not to travel into the CBD.

Ferry services will not be operating until further notice due to debris in the river.

For further information on public transport and affected services, please visit the TransLink website at www.translink.com.au or phone 13 12 30.

Waste services
Waste services will resume for a minority of the city tomorrow, with other parts of the city to follow next week. The delays are due to the impact of floodwaters on depots and homes. If you have had your rubbish collections missed, your collection will resume as usual next week. Council's waste transfer stations will be open to the public for free tipping until 9pm.

Water
We have been advised by Queensland Urban Utilities that water in the greater Brisbane area is perfectly safe to drink. However sewage treatment plants are now discharging directly into our creeks and rivers, so people should stay out of floodwaters due to potential health risks. I repeat, do not let your children play in floodwater. It is unhealthy and contaminated with chemicals and sewerage. Please do not go through floodwaters to get to your property. It is better to let the water recede and then make the journey.

Electricity
Power cuts have meant that many traffic lights are out. Some of Council's traffic cameras are also not functioning so traffic warnings will be limited. Please be careful on the roads as water may appear in areas you do not suspect.

Sandbags
So far Brisbane City Council has given out over 300,000 sandbags. We have another 65,000 bags available if they are required at our various depots.

Anchor to hold Moggill Ferry

QuoteAnchor to hold Moggill Ferry

FEARS the Moggill Ferry would break its holdings and hurtle down the Brisbane River and damage bridges were abated yesterday.

The Moggill Ferry is now secure.

FEARS the Moggill Ferry would break its holdings and hurtle down the Brisbane River and damage bridges were abated yesterday when an extra anchor was attached to the vessel.

The anchor was brought in overnight and attached to the Moggill Ferry with a police spokesperson confirming it is now considered stable. On Wednesday night it broke a guide line with assessors considering sinking – or demolishing the ferry – to prevent it becoming a missile if attaching an extra anchor didn't work.

But the anchor has worked for now with police confirming it is still being monitored.

Also on Thursday morning, a 300-tonne piece of the Brisbane City RiverWalk hurtled down the flooded river, under the Gateway bridges after breaking off at New Farm.

Tug boat operators pushed it down the river before it was secured at Nudgee Beach.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts warned people to stay out of the Brisbane River due to the amount of large debris floating down it.

"The river is very unsafe, there are a lot of large objects moving down the river. Again we can only stress the unsafe nature of being close to that or in that environment," he said.
