ABC News --> Cairns' worst floods on record spark debate about future of city's flood-prone suburbs

QuoteThree months on from Cairns' worst floods in recorded history, Donna Jardine and her neighbours still find themselves living on an "island" on the city's northern beaches.

The sheer deluge of water down the Barron River on December 17 tore through a beachfront street, isolating dozens of residents as others desperately pleaded for help.

"When we realised we couldn't get to people because [the road had gone], that's where the panic set in," Ms Jardine, a Holloways Beach resident, said. ...

ABC News --> Wet weather predicted to hit southern Queensland with flooding possible in Charleville, Roma, St George, Goondiwindi

QuoteWidespread rain is forecast for the remainder of Queensland's school holiday period, with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) predicting drenching falls in parts of the south-east.

The BOM's Harry Clark said big falls could also hit the southern interior — with totals of 200 millimetres or more forecast — due to the threat of isolated, stationary storms.

The worst wet weather will last right into next week and cause possible flooding in Charleville, Roma, St George and Goondiwindi.

A flood watch for that region was issued by the BOM late on Wednesday afternoon. ...

ABC News --> South-east Queensland heads into a wet weekend as state's west floods

QuoteWeekend storms will bring a flood risk for southern Queensland, where rivers, creeks and catchments could "respond rapidly" to even moderate rainfall.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is expecting 10 to 20 millimetres of rain for the Brisbane region today, with the possibility of up to 40 millimetres tomorrow.

Heavier falls are likely south of Brisbane, at Logan, on the Gold Coast and Scenic Rim, with downpours also likely on the Darling Downs, and eastern Maranoa and Warrego.

Meanwhile, Charleville and nearby towns are expected to be isolated for days after the levee was shut on Friday, shortly before the Warrego River was due to peak.

The Warrego River on the town's outskirts continued to rise overnight, reaching higher than 6.62 metres this morning. ...
