Major milestone reached on Yeerongpilly footbridge extension

The 62 tonne, 43 meter footbridge structure has now been placed over Fairfield Road.

The footbridge and arrival structure were pre-fabricated off-site then lifted into place over-night on Saturday 20 November.

TransLink appreciates the patience and understanding demonstrated by motorists during these important works.

QuoteYeerongpilly footbridge gets a super lift
Wednesday 24 November 2010

A 62 tonne superstructure was lifted into place by crane this weekend for the new Yeerongpilly rail station footbridge.

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan said the superstructure lift across Fairfield Road was the major milestone in the architecturally-designed $8 million footbridge extension project, linking Yeerongpilly train station, the Queensland Tennis Centre and the planned Yeerongpilly Transit Oriented Development.

"The new tennis-themed structure will create a fitting entryway to the Queensland Tennis Centre and Yeerongpilly TOD," Ms Nolan said.

"As more than 80 per cent of people travel by train for special events at the tennis centre, it is fitting that this new infrastructure will have a strong tennis theme.

"Over the past few months, the project team has been hard at work to construct the 43 metre steel footbridge and arrival structure off-site in preparation for the placement of the footbridge over Fairfield Road.

"To position the footbridge over Fairfield Road, it took the project team three hours to assemble and prepare for the structure lift on site, about an hour to lift and position the bridge into place and a further three hours to complete final structural works and reopen Fairfield Road to motorists."

Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Stirling Hinchliffe said it would provide a handy link to the planned Yeerongpilly TOD – an exemplar development integrating public transport with community facilities, employment and housing.

"Population growth presents us with challenges but we are committed to developing tangible solutions to these issues while continuing to protect Queensland's unique lifestyle,'' Mr Hinchliffe said.

"This Transit Oriented Development will allow residents to live, work and play in areas with fantastic access to transport, shops, restaurants, employment opportunities and public spaces with a reduced reliance on cars.

"It will be an exciting precinct, delivered in partnership with Brisbane City Council, to address a wide range of issues associated with population growth including traffic congestion, housing affordability, changing household types."

Member for Yeerongpilly Simon Finn said the project included stairs and a lift on the western side of Fairfield Road to provide access and connections to the tennis centre, future transit-oriented development and surrounding areas.

"It is an extension of the current Yeerongpilly station structure, and will include security lighting and cameras within the footbridge, lift and stairs," Mr Finn said.

"There will be new footpaths that will link to the Queensland Tennis Centre, the new Tennyson precinct and Fairfield Road access paths.

"The new footbridge will also be ideal for people with mobility issues as the original station access on the eastern side of Fairfield Road was by stairs only.

"It will connect people attending sporting events at the Queensland Tennis Centre with a direct connection from the train station to the centre without having to cross busy Fairfield Road.

"The footbridge will be finished for use by tennis fans during the 2011 Brisbane International tournament in early January 2011."

Yeerongpilly footbridge opens for tennis fans
Monday 20 December 2010

Tennis fans will have safer and more convenient access over busy Fairfield Road in time for the start of the Brisbane International Tennis Tournament early next year.

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan and Member for Yeerongpilly Simon Finn today inspected final works on the new $8 million tennis-themed footbridge linking Yeerongpilly train station and the Queensland Tennis Centre, which will be open to the public on Wednesday, December 29.

"This architecturally-designed footbridge extension creates a safer direct pedestrian link from the train station to the Queensland Tennis Centre just in time for the Brisbane International," Ms Nolan said.

"The Bligh Government announced late last year that a footbridge would be built and I'm delighted to stand here today and say we will be delivering it in time for the tournament beginning in just a few weeks time.

"The new structure will create an iconic entryway to the Queensland Tennis Centre and surrounding areas, and as most people travel by train for events at the Tennis Centre, it is fitting that this new infrastructure has a strong tennis theme."

Mr Finn said that more than 80 per cent of people attending events at the Queensland Tennis Centre travelled by public transport and the new overpass would make that journey even easier and safer for passengers.

"The new footbridge will include lifts and stairs on the western side of Fairfield Road to provide good access and connection to the tennis centre, future development and surrounding areas," Mr Finn said.

"There are also new footpaths that link to the Queensland Tennis Centre, the new Tennyson precinct and Fairfield Road.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank local residents for their patience while this important piece of infrastructure was being constructed.

"This project delivers on an election commitment we made to have this infrastructure completed by the end of 2010 in time for the Brisbane International Tennis Tournament."

Ms Nolan said the project team has been hard at work since mid-July to ensure construction was completed in time for the Brisbane International Tennis Tournament beginning on 2 January 2011.

"In November, a major milestone for the project was reached, when a 260 tonne crane lifted the 43 metre-long, 62 tonne superstructure into place across Fairfield Road, in a process that took nine hours to complete," Ms Nolan said.

Tennis fans can walk from Yeerongpilly train station or take a shuttle bus from Corinda to the tennis centre.

All Beenleigh line trains and selected trains on the Gold Coast line will stop at Yeerongpilly train station for the duration of the event.

Timetables will be available to passengers closer to the event from the TransLink website.
