The Advertiser: Smartphones to pinpoint public transport

Quote
COMMUTERS will be able to see how far away their bus, train or tram is on their phone within the next few years, as part of the State Government's new public transport ticketing system.

GPS devices will be fitted to the state's public transport rolling stock so the Government can track exactly where its buses and other vehicles are at all times.

The benefit to consumers is that information can also be directed into an application which can run on smartphones, meaning the mystery about how far away your bus is will disappear.

Rod Hook, executive director of the Office of Major Projects and Infrastructure, said this meant people would be able to sit at home and see exactly where the bus or train was on its route.

Why doesn't translink have a smart phone app to track busses ferries and trains? Surely must be releasing one soon!?

How embarrassing is it going to be when Adelaide overtakes us in a few years, with more frequent rail services, expanding light rail network, simpler & better ticketing, and better services like this?

longboi

Buses and ferries are already fitted out with GPS equipment so we're at least part of the way there.
