Today's site outage
by Ken » Tue Nov 23, 2010 9:57 pm

Earlier today I accidentally deleted the entire site from the web server. I wasn't aware you could easily do this with one click but yes you can.

Even better was that unknown to me the web host doesn't routinely perform backups, so there was no recent backup to restore from.

As you may have noticed the deletion does not affect any posts on this forum (as the posts are all stored in a database, not files) BUT attachments will be affected.

The configuration of the forum should be fine as it is stored within the database too, but numerous files such as smilies, user avatars, attachments etc will need to be re-uploaded.

Also to be fixed are other parts of this site such as:
- fleetlists (Fleet Lists should have a recent backup of the fleet list files, but unforunately he is away for the next week or two)
- photo gallery
- home page photo
Plus other things no doubt.

I apologise to everyone for this unfortunate happening and will try my best to get it all back working properly. If anyone notices something in need of fixing that I haven't noticed, let me know.

It is sometimes a thankless job looking after major web sites on the web.  The web is inherently a very unstable system!   :D

I use three different backup systems for our forum, web host (unreliable as Ken found out), internal SMF admin back up, and an external java SMF utility back up.  One cannot be too safe wrt backups.

I really empathise with Ken.  I don't think many users actually realise or understand the effort it takes some times to be admin of these sites.   We are constantly fending off robots and spammers and alert for other oddities.

Glad you are back on track Ken.
