LNP will secure Sunshine Coast lifestyle

The Sunshine Coast's enviable lifestyle will be protected under an LNP Government, with extensive development, infrastructure, environment and economic plans to be created.

Sunshine Coast MPs, Jarrod Bleijie, Steve Dickson, Glen Elmes, Mark McArdle, Andrew Powell and Fiona Simpson met in Caloundra today to launch A Liveable Sunshine Coast, the LNP's Policy for protecting the region's unique characteristics.

The policy guarantees -

    * The development of a Sunshine Coast Integrated Transport Plan
    * The development of a Sunshine Coast Economic Development Plan
    * Reform to stop the abuse of the Ministerial call-in process
    * Independent monitoring of catchment quality and development assessed on whole of catchment impact

Shadow Minister for Health and Caloundra MP Mark McArdle said the policy was the starting point for planning the Sunshine Coast's future.

"The LNP is committed to ensuring the Sunshine Coast remains a wonderful place to live, learn and earn," Mr McArdle said.

"We are committed to supporting the Coast, delivering much needed infrastructure, including the Sunshine Coast Hospital, and ensuring a balance between development and the environment.

"Under an LNP Government Ministerial call-ins will only be used in exceptional circumstances — we will restore transparency and integrity to the planning process.

"This policy is our promise to the Sunshine Coast that they will have a real say in shaping the future of their region."

Shadow Minister for Main Roads and Transport and Maroochydore MP Fiona Simpson said the LNP was committed to deliver a Sunshine Coast specific Integrated Transport Plan so roads and public transport connected Coast communities.

"We will announce some key infrastructure in the lead-up to the next election but the integrated plan that it fits into is critical to our guarantee for the ongoing delivery of affordable and efficient transport services to support sustainable growth on the Sunshine Coast," Ms Simpson said.

"This is about being practical, not just aspirational. The long-term Labor Government has failed to lock down and deliver infrastructure — under an LNP Government, Sunshine Coast residents will know what to expect, and when they can expect it."

Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Glen Elmes said the Liveable Sunshine Coast policy guaranteed an LNP Government would take a all-encompassing approach to protecting the Sunshine Coast's catchments.

"We are lucky enough to live in a place with outstanding natural beauty and major catchments, including the Pumicestone Passage, Currimundi, Mooloolah, Maroochy and Noosa river systems; these must be protected from inappropriate development," Mr Elmes said.

"Protecting green space and minimising the adverse impacts from developments, such as run-off and erosion is vital, but so is considering the overall impact of all development in an area, not each development on its own.

"An LNP Government will provide for independent monitoring of the impact developments are having on the local environment, including water catchment quality.

"However, we recognise that there is a need for whole-of-catchment planning for areas such as Pumicestone Passage to ensure that there is proper understanding of what the incremental impacts are of some developments."

Ms Simpson said Sunshine Coast residents would have greater opportunities to work close to home under an LNP Government.

"The LNP's Sunshine Coast Economic Plan will guide the economic growth of the region and will work with the local business community and residents to build on our strengths.

"Sunshine Coast residents know that our region is a special place to live, work and play.

"The LNP is committed to this region and ensuring growth does not change the very things that brought us all here in the first place."

Abbot happy with LNP blueprint

12th November 2010

MAYOR Bob Abbot said the LNP blueprint for the Sunshine Coast released this week looked like a straight lift from council policy.

John-Paul Langbroek.

MAYOR Bob Abbot said the LNP blueprint for the Sunshine Coast released this week looked like a straight lift from council policy.

And that is entirely fine by Cr Abbot who has been at loggerheads with the Labor Government over its development planning takeover of the southern part of the Coast and lack of infrastructure.

Mr Abbot said from an environment conference at the Gold Coast that he was inclined to ring up the various LNP members and congratulate the alternative government on a job well done.

He welcomed not only the commitment to rein-in ministerial call-ins, but a commitment to look after the Coast's transport needs.

LNP leader John-Paul Langbroek released his A Liveable Sunshine Coast policy statement, whose main points were:

The LNP supports a liveable Sunshine Coast, one with its own unique character. We recognise this region is not Brisbane North.

The Sunshine Coast is rightly proud of its lifestyle. The LNP believes it is important residents have a say in shaping the future of their region.

Local LNP member Glen Elmes said the Coast's lifestyle would be protected under an LNP Government, with holistic development, infrastructure, environment and economic plans to be created for the Sunshine Coast region.

It is all words until they all except upwards of 65-75% of all trips by active/public transport and freight rail.  EWe have lots of Integrated Transport Plans that are nothing but plans to build motorways now and maybe other forms later on...when demand is greater.

Hot Air is what it is called.

When I go and look at Richlands I see a railway and a station.  When I go north of Beerburrum I see a stalled project.  Public transport poor urban sprawl is a disaster waiting to happen.

How many more plans, studies, endless consultation loops, political postures do we need?  None.  There is a transport crisis looming.

Start digging ...

Caloundra to Maroochydore has a much bigger population than Rockingham to Mandurah.  The Government's inaction on the Sunshine Coast is shameful.

I can't help feeling that some of it has to do with who holds the electorates up there, and antagonism to the council (as demonstrated by the Caloundra South call-in & removal of CAMCOS clauses from that plan).

Ahh, just a load of twaddle from the LNP on the Sunshine Coast.  Here is what they promised.  What has happened?

When something unexpected happens (GFC, floods), you maintain the objective, but adjust the plans to achieve it, surely.  In Qld, the same bucket of money chases several projects where the plans become stalled, the costs go up, the scope changes ... and the dollars go from here to there and get used up, delaying projects or requiring them to be provided in inefficient ways (full strength CRR becomes CRR lite).

Project cost goes up?  Fix estimation problems, increase payroll tax or adopt some other fiscal measure to bring the project back on track.

These days, government's make promises about keeping down the cost of living or reducing costs and red tape for industry, thereby restricting the levers they have to pull.  They want to be loved for chasing the pennies while their actions, or lack of action, costs pounds.
