Revitalised TasRail fleet to help boost rail services

The Minister for Infrastructure, Lara Giddings, has hailed the launch of TasRail's first fully-upgraded locomotive as a major step forward for the rail company.
Ms Giddings this morning officially launched and unveiled the newly upgraded Loco 2001, which now features a rebuilt engine, new wheels and brakes and new safety features.

"The current TasRail locomotive fleet is being upgraded over the next two years as an interim measure, while TasRail seeks to source new locomotives in the long-term," Ms Giddings said.

"This process will reassure customers about the reliability of rail freight services until the new locomotive fleet is purchased."

Ms Giddings said the project had taken seven months to complete at a cost of $950,000.

"Loco 2001 was seen as the ideal prototype, because the work could be completed without impacting train services.

"Upgrading the locomotive fleet will offer substantial benefits, including a more compatible fleet, improvements in freight service and reliability for customers and improved safety and amenities for train drivers.

"Since 2007-08, the State and Federal Governments have invested more than $400 million in Tasmania's rail freight network, demonstrating our commitment to delivering an effective rail freight network.

"Today's launch shows just how far TasRail has come since its establishment less than 12 months ago."
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...
