Queensland Rail

The safety and security of our customers and employees is our number one priority, and we look to be a leader in this space.

Queensland Rail has an established security plan linked to the Federal Government's National Terrorism Public Alert levels. Because we are well prepared and practiced we were able to implement this plan as soon as the Federal Government raised the alert level.

One of these measures involves the closure of bins at a number of stations. We will review this plan to see how it progresses.

For example, we are currently in the process of reviewing different bins with additional security features which may be put in place at our stations in the future.

As always, we will ensure our stations are clean and tidy for our customers.

We appreciate our customers' understanding as we implement these necessary changes and ask that they dispose of their rubbish thoughtfully, at a later time.

@QueenslandRail Will you be considering transparent bins per current British/ European practice?

Brisbanetimes --> Security to conduct train toilet searches as terror threat raised

They have absolutely lost the plot.

What if somebody's on the bog?  Wait the entire train until they have wiped their arse?

The terrorists have won.

The people who are the genuine terror threats (i.e. Islamic suicide bombers) gave up on the bin/toilet trick years ago anyway. These days they'll just walk on to a train with a pre-assembled bomb in their backpack and just blow up whatever they damn want - its irrelevant to them because as long as they take a few hundred people with them to "heaven", the suicide bomber still gets their 300 virgins. ::)

All this security stuff is just a charade, it isn't going to stop anything, nor make Brisbane any more (or less) safe.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Couldn't have said it better myself. While we're at it, we better stop running all trains and buses to prevent a London style attack on transport as well!

Apparently this is just the beginning...

Serious new security measures will affect Brisbane bus users and motorists, as well as train commuters. The raised terror alert level has already seen bins at city train stations bolted shut, but Translink and Brisbane City Council are expanding the measures. Full details TONIGHT in 9 News at 6.00pm.

Brisbanetimes --> Brisbane trains delayed south of city

QuoteTrains on the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines have been delayed up to an hour after an incident at Runcorn station.

A young man has died after falling from the back of a train while "train surfing" in Brisbane's south.

Initial reports suggest the man jumped onto the last carriage of a train as it was leaving Altandi train station, near Sunnybank, about 1.30pm.

Police said CCTV footage showed the young man spraying graffiti on the train as it travelled south from Altandi station, towards Runcorn station.

It is understood the man fell from the train onto the tracks about 150 metres from Runcorn station.

He died shortly before 2pm.

The young man is believed to be aged in his late teens or early 20s, police said.

The driver of an oncoming train raised the alarm about 10 minutes later, after seeing the young man's body in the middle of the tracks.

Trains on the Gold Coast and Beenleigh line have been suspended in both directions between Fruitgrove and Runcorn stations, as police investigate the incident.

Commuters have been warned of delays of up to 60 minutes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Video went viral on facebook mainly due to a popular music rapper sharing it....resulting in about 10k + comments and resulting shares....
Translink are continuing to delete the posts on thier page but staying silent...just wondering..due to its seriousness...should both them an QR release some sort of statement?
This is now going worldwide and brisbane is definitely being put on the map now....

We have removed the clip from our social media this morning due to the extreme language and content. We are disgusted at the anti-social behaviour of this passenger towards one of our contracted security guards.

We strive to provide a safe workplace for our people and to see this occur is appalling.

We congratulate the train guard on his response to ask the passenger to immediately leave the train.

We have contacted the security company to offer our support to the guard.

We would like to remind passengers that we have more than 8200 CCTV cameras installed across the network; as well as Railway Squad police officers, mobile security, dog patrols and transit offers patrolling the network.

We will work to work with Queensland Police on this incident.

Good that they have responded to the incident.....will do little to ease the minds of a lot of multicultural users of our network....

Here is a responding post from a user
QuoteAlwis Queensland rail -There is no point having 82000 cctvs if you couldn't take action when it happened ! Why did you have to wait till this became a internet phenomenon for you to start doing something about this ? I have seen this sort of appauling behaviour before directed at me and other islander nationals and Indians and Sri Lankans. However nothing is done to clear out Racism! It's time you take action by having posters and other placards about how you don't tolerate racism on trains and in this state !

Im noticing on brisbane trains that QR reserves plenty of poster space for things like "turn up and go on our network" or " here is our customer charter"....time for a rethink on using this space effectively...

Queensland Rail responded appropriately and responsibly.  The matter is with the police and that is where it should lie.

I happened to be asked about the video by Channel 10 at Central today.  They were asking people as they went in and out of the station.  I hadn't actually seen the video.  The reporter showed me a bit of it before asking some questions.

It was hard to work out what to say when put on the spot - particularly having not seen the video.

But who knows - I might end up on Channel 10 news tonight.  :)

What's most concerning is that it occurred at (one of my) local stations.

Despite the individual at the centre of this 'apologising', going by what I found on his Facebook, he's only showing remorse because of the kind of attacks which were being made against him on his Facebook (which he had on 'Public' privacy settings - he's obviously not very bright).

damn right charges are being laid too. i hope gaol time is issued, but it probably wont be. he probably wont even get a fine because he is probably unemployed.
i hadnt seen the video until tonight on the news when karen called me in to watch it. i had no idea what she was even talking about. (i have been living in my office working on laboratory data for the past week.) it was disgusting to see that footage. how thick can you get, the mate filmed it and uploaded it to the internet. that just shows the intelligence of the parties concerned. i am even more disappointed at the other commuters for not stepping in and doing something. there is no place for that sort of behaviour in our society, or any society as far as im concerned. the only thing that didnt surprise me was that is was the ipswich line. we have seen our share of disgraceful antics late at night on the trains. we still kinda miss the cleveland line because it is much more civilized!

Queensland Rail

We were pleased to hear that the offenders have been charged by Queensland Police.

We would like to thank members of the community who have left many messages of support on our social media sites.

Our security guards, Railway Squad Police and mobile dog patrols work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of our customers across the network. Their right to come to work and be treated respectfully is something we take very seriously and a right everyone deserves.

We hope that this sends a message to those who disregard that right.

We continue to assist Police with their ongoing investigation.

No he is employed by a tyre business.  Apparently that shirt he was wearing was the company T shirt that people recognized and hence managed to help track him down.

that is even worse, to do something like that in a work uniform. he will surely lose the job after that. i know if i were his boss i would be dismissing him because he was a bad reflection on my business. people who engage in this kind of behaviour may come out and say they are sorry, but. the damage is done, and they are omly sorry thue got caught. being drunk isnt an excuse for treating another human in that way. epic respect for joe, i hope he gets a pay rise.

One of his friends posted on a Facebook page that was set up to find him, who basically said that he's now lost his job, kicked out of home and has lost some of his friends from that incident, now sitting in a cell questioning why he did what he did.  If that's the case, I'm pleased.

I'm also pleased just to see how powerful social media is, you really cannot get away with it nowadays with camera phones, Facebook and the power of social media and community.

Well done to all involved, including Joe the Security Guard.  :clp:
