As can be noted from the above table, weekly tickets are a much better deal for the regular commuter, particularly above 10 zones.

The only advantage for the regular commuter with the card is a 50% reduction on all trips after the 6 trip threshold, eg.  a zone 3 commuter takes a trip to the Coast on the weekend.  But what is not mentioned by the spin merchants is that you can get extension tickets if you have a weekly.  So this advantage is not quite what it seems.

Weekly tickets give genuine unrestricted travel in zones without the need to worry about tag-on, tag-off, transfer time limits, system failures and the like.

Bob - extension tickets? Is this where you buy another weekly on the last day of your weekly ticket?

No worries Mozz. An extension ticket is when you have a current seasonal ticket, eg. weekly, and you wish to travel past the zones of your seasonal ticket.  Say I have a zone 1 to 3 weekly current, and I wish to go to  a zone 5 destination.  I can approach the ticket window, say Oxley (zone 3) show my current weekly and buy a zone 4/5 extension ticket, single, off peak or daily depending on requirements for that trip.  That is an extension ticket.  I do that often as I normally have a zone 1 to 3 weekly and if I am making a special trip to Ferny Grove or Cleveland or something I just purchase an extension.  This of course extends the real value of a weekly (or monthly etc.)

One of the problems with the TVMs is that they don't allow extension ticketing purchasing, only via ticket windows.
