They've now resumed services from St Lucia to North Quay, but not in the reverse direction. Still heavy fog out UQ way, I could only just make out the ferry terminal from my bus across the green bridge.

Oil spill hits CityCat services

QuoteOil spill hits CityCat services

    From: The Courier-Mail

MORE than five tonnes of oil has spilled into the Brisbane River during a refuelling mishap at the Hamilton Wharves early this morning.

The incident is likely to cause commuter chaos after it forced Brisbane City Council to suspend its CityCat services at its Northshore Hamilton terminal for at least 24 hours.

Maritime Safety Queensland acting general manager Jum Huggett said the oil was lost during the refuelling of a Panama-owned cargo ship, the GL Lan Xiu.

He said the cargo ship was being refuelled by the Valiant III at Hamilton Number 4 Wharf when the oil spill took place.

Around 2000 head of cattle due to be loaded on to the GL Lan Xiu, bound for Japan, remain in holding yards while authorities investigate the incident.

Mr Huggett said the clean-up operation was already under way.

"We have deployed oil skimmers and placed booms around the ship in addition to measures also being taken by the Port of Brisbane,'' he said.

"MSQ will investigate the circumstances of the spill but our priority at this stage is to contain the oil and clean it up as soon as possible.''

He said MSQ had engaged a helicopter to fly over the spill scene this afternoon.

He said environmental agencies had been notified of the spill and clean-up crews were on stand-by.

A BCC spokesman said the oil spill would affect both evening CityCat services and morning services on Tuesday.

He said buses would ferry affected commuters from the Bretts Wharf terminal and Northshore Hamilton terminals while CityCat services in the area were cut.
