CityHopper and Cross River ferries suspended

https://translink.com.au/service-updates/287596

From the first service on Saturday 25 July until further notice all CityHopper and Cross River ferry services on the Brisbane River will be suspended.

This has been done to allow for immediate safety inspections and maintenance of the ferry fleet.

Please note: CityCats are unaffected and will continue operate as normal.

QuoteSome of Brisbane's iconic river ferries have been pulled from the water to undergo urgent maintenance after issues were found with one of the vessels.
All Cross River and City Hopper ferry services will be suspended from midnight tonight for an indefinite period of time.
All of the city's City Cat ferry services will continue as usual.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the issue with one boat was identified while works were being undertaken in line with the council's accessibility and inclusion upgrades.
"With our older wooden ferries, these vessels have been on the river for 30 years," he said.
"They have not been built to the current disability access standards and so since earlier this year, we've had one of those vessels off the river.
"(We are) investigating ways that we can make the vessels more disability access friendly."
It was during these assessments that issues with one of the boat's hull's was found, Cr Schrinner said.
"As part of the work we have taken the vessel apart and we have discovered some deterioration of the wooden hull," he said.
"That prompted us immediately to engage some independent experts and independent advice when it comes to ship building to have a look at these boats in more detail.
"Last night we received advice from that expert that two of our ferries should come off the water immediately for repair works to be done.
"We have done that. They came off the water last night.
"All nine of those ferries will come off the water (today) so we can look at them all in detail and make sure the travelling public have confidence in our ferry services."
Cr Schrinner said the council took swift action and was removing the extra ferries out of an "abundance of caution".
There will be a reduction in services over the weekend but Cr Schrinner said there would not be any impact on City Cat services.
The City Hopper is the city's free ferry service which runs every half hour.

One wonders if the hulls have been properly checked during the last 30 years ...  ::)

Brisbanetimes --> Ageing ferries pulled by council after 'deterioration' concerns

QuoteBrisbane's fleet of wooden cross-river ferries will be pulled from service from midnight for inspection after concerns were raised about their ageing condition.

The announcement from lord mayor Adrian Schrinner comes after hours of disruptions caused by vessels being pulled from two routes, with Labor criticising the council for not acting sooner.

Alternative transport arrangements in the form of extra CityCats and buses will replace all other Cross River and CityHopper ferries from Monday, until further notice.

The fleet of nine was being assessed for disability compliance by the council "earlier this year" when one 32-year-old vessel was found to require "a significant maintenance overhaul", Cr Schrinner said in a statement.

"Very early expert indications suggest some deterioration requiring further investigation," he continued.

"While we could continue to operate services, I have made the decision for all ferries to be assessed concurrently, as soon as possible."
After that information was relayed to the council on Thursday, two vessels on the Kangaroo Point and Norman Park routes were pulled from service overnight.

All remaining ferries across the CityHopper, Kangaroo Point, Bulimba-to-Teneriffe and Norman Park-to-New Farm routes will now run their last trips for the foreseeable future by midnight.

Cr Schrinner apologised for the inconvenience but added that "taking an abundance of caution" was the best approach and said he would not compromise safety.

"We are looking to reinstate the Cross River and CityHopper services as soon as possible, ensuring all existing staff are retained."

Individual ferries are expected to be returned to the water as soon as they are cleared.

Labor councillor Kara Cook (Morningside) said the decision would cause "chaos" for commuters on Monday morning.

"Brisbane residents need to be confident that regular safety checks are taking place and any safety risks identified are acted on swiftly, not months later with a few hours' notice to commuters," she said.

A new 12-minute shuttle bus service, running every 30 minutes with stops at the Story Bridge and Eagle Street, will provide an alternative for regular commuters on the Kangaroo Point ferry.

Other ferry users are urged to use existing nearby bus and CityCat routes.

30min bus wait...for a 12min journey....what is it about Brisbane transport and 30min services.... no abundance - less reliability!

Temporary Route 27 actually runs every 20 mins, not 30.
