Where is the CityCat?

Good Morning,

We have noted that in the period 13 - 18 June 2019, there has been around 31 reported CityCat service cancellations due to either mechanical or operational issues ( https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=4176.msg222985#msg222985 & https://twitter.com/TransLinkSEQ ).

In the period  7 - 12 June 2019 there was one service cancellation.

This is a very high rate of service cancellation of CityCat services of late. Normally CityCat services are very reliable.

Is there an explanation please?  Is it to due to crew sickness, problems with vessel reliability or other (industrial?).

We think a public statement should be forthcoming.

Best wishes,

Robert

It looks like entire runs are being knocked out here. The 3:17pm to UQ St Lucia becomes the 4:22pm to North Quay, becoming the 4:40pm to UQ St Lucia and so on.

Perhaps there is no slack in the CityCat fleet, meaning when one ferry goes tech, they have to wipe out an entire peak-hour run? Hence targeting the SpeedyCats, which skip stops and tend to have lower patronage, compared to all-stops services. Either way, an explanation is in order.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

#Metro

Maybe the SpeedyCat services have pushed the fleet to the max, which makes the entire timetable unstable to small delays?

Interesting to note that as soon as questions started to be asked yesterday morning, the reported service cancellations stopped.

This means one of two things.

1.  Normal network reliability restored,

or

2.  They have stopped reporting service disruptions.

Good Morning,

We noted that there were a further 3 CityCat service cancellations yesterday morning ( https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=4176.msg223747#msg223747 ), and then the rest of the day no further reported service disruptions.

1.  Normal network service reliability restored,

or

2.  They have stopped reporting service disruptions.

Take your pick.  The lack of a public explanation as to why there was a period of a high number of service cancellations is typical of the failing insular communication poor transport authorities in this state.

Have a nice day now won't you all.

Best wishes,
Robert

Brisbanetimes --> Mechanical issue behind surge in CityCat service cancellations

QuoteA recent spike in CityCat cancellations has been attributed to "unpredictable faults" on two ferries operating on the Brisbane River.

Over a period of four days between Wednesday last week and Tuesday this week, multiple SpeedyCat ferry services and some CityCat services were cancelled because of the issue.

On June 13, ferry services were cancelled upstream and downstream, half due to a "mechanical issue" and the rest because of "operational" issues.

The issue returned again the next day, with four CityCat and six SpeedyCat services upstream and downstream cancelled.

On June 17 and 18, more SpeedyCat and CityCat services were cancelled, most of them between North Quay and UQ St Lucia.

Peak-hour SpeedyCat services were introduced by the council last year as express services up and down the river.

Public and active transport committee chairwoman Krista Adams said the cancellations were due to two ferries having mechanical issues.

"There were between five and six services each day cancelled between 13 and 18 June following unpredictable faults on two vessels which required them to be taken out of service and investigated," she said.

"During this time, the timetable was adjusted to prioritise CityCats that serviced all stops.

"Both of these vessels have since returned to service."

In the 2019-2020 budget, handed down last week, lord mayor Adrian Schrinner announced the council would spend more than $30 million over the next four years for six new double-decker CityCats.

In the coming financial year, the council had pledged $179,000 towards the six new CityCats, increasing to $9.9 million in 2020-2021, and more than $10 million in the two years following.

One new CityCat will be completed in the coming financial year at a cost of $1.5 million, carrying 170 passengers.

The council also announced free off-peak travel on ferries and buses across the Brisbane public transport network for seniors, to commence in October.

CityCat cancellations explained

Good Morning,

Do our transport authorities work on the maxim ' better late than never '?  Days after we queried what was going on with the CityCats this article appears at Brisbanetimes:

Mechanical issue behind surge in CityCat service cancellations

https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/queensland/mechanical-issue-behind-surge-in-citycat-service-cancellations-20190620-p51zs9.html

It would stop a lot of frustration if transport authorities were a little more timely and direct, instead of bumbling around in silos.

It is great shame that the Government has given up on forming a dedicated public transport authority.  They are obviously going to stick with the structures that have delivered much failure the past decade.  We are not confident that this failure will be turned around any time soon, if ever.  There is denial and delusion at the highest levels sadly.

Day 998 of rail fail today!
