Elderly man dies while crossing railway line at Middle Brighton station in Melbourne

An elderly man has died after being struck by a train as he crossed a railway line in the Melbourne bayside suburb of Brighton.

Police said the man had already started to cross the tracks when the signals began operating at the Middle Brighton Railway Station just after 10:00pm.

"Investigators understand the man was unable to complete crossing before being struck by an unoccupied, low-speed city-bound train," a police statement said.

The man died at the scene.

Investigators are preparing a report for the coroner.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.

Colac Herald --> Truck and train collide near Colac, driver in serious condition

An air ambulance has flown a truck driver to Melbourne after his truck and a train collided on a level crossing west of Colac.

The grain truck driver sustained serious injuries in the crash at the Phalps Road level crossing at Pirron Yallock.

The front carriages of the west-bound V-Line train derailed in the crash, but remained upright.

Ambulances, police, State Emergency Services and Country Fire Authority crews attended the scene.

The train driver and 12 passengers received treatment for minor injuries, and an ambulance helicopter took the truck driver to Melbourne for treatment. He was in a serious condition.

V-Line organised replacement buses for passengers to continue their journeys to Warrnambool.

The crash happened minutes after the train left Colac Railway Station.

... Last year, the Victorian government fast-tracked $2 million to install flashing lights and boom gates at Pirron Yallock and two other country crossings after dangerous incidents. The work was supposed to have started last year, but the crossings have not yet been upgraded.

It was part of the $50 million Safer Country Crossings Program to boost safety at 52 priority roads and level crossings that carry high speed passenger trains or a high number of heavy vehicles ...

A man is in a critical condition after a crash between his car and a train in Bairnsdale, in the state's east.

He is still being treated at the scene by paramedics and is expected to be airlifted to The Alfred.

The crash happened on Power Station Road in Bairnsdale about 6.20am this morning.

The car and the V/Line train collided at a crossing about one kilometre from Bairndale station. There are warning signs at the crossing but no lights or boom gates.

There were about 65 passengers on the train at the time, but none of them are believed to be injured.

Ambulance Victoria received a call about a collision on Power Station Road at 6.20am where they found a man with serious injuries, who they are treating until a helicopter arrives to take him to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.
