AFTER three decades of restoration and track work, Victoria's Goldfields Railway is finally running at full steam.

Heritage trains running from Maldon and Castlemaine twice a week are providing visitors with a unique travel experience on Victoria's sole single-gauge train line.

The railway, which served rural Victoria for more than 90 years, was closed in 1976 after track damage and decline in demand.

Almost immediately after its closure, preservation work began on its three trains and has continued for more than two decades, with charter services running while the work was being completed.

The restoration works were completed by members of the public who volunteered their time and expertise.

Marketing officer Garry Aitchison said the work was a big achievement for those who had dedicated their time to restoring the landmark.

"Without the volunteers, the trains wouldn't run, it's an excellent example of a community showing pride in a project," Mr Aitchison said. "They do a remarkable job."

One steam train runs three times a day every Wednesday and Sunday, with the remaining trains being rotated for scheduled maintenance.

The rides on the scenic railway are a hit with children.

"We had a very busy school holidays," Mr Aitchison said.

"On the last weekend of the school holidays, more than 800 passengers rode the railway."

Victorian Goldfields Railway offers a variety of packages, including first-class travel in refurbished carriages, as well as the opportunity to drive a steam train.
