INFRA-RED cameras designed to detect rowers on the Brisbane River at night will be rolled out across the CityCat fleet.

The move follows a serious crash in 2005 when a CityCat collided with rowers from St Margaret's Anglican Girls School at dawn, injuring two of the schoolgirls.

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said the cameras would be installed on all 16 vessels in the CityCat fleet after a successful trial, at a cost of $320,000.

They are expected to be installed from next month.

Brisbane's 16th CityCat, named Gootcha, was launched last week with the infra-red equipment.

Cr Newman said council would also begin trialling a new safety system to warn rowers when CityCats were docking in the area.

Under the $40,000 trial, which will run at Guyatt Park until the end of November, lighting strips will be placed close to the waterline and illuminate automatically when one of the vessels is approaching.
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...

Was that five years ago?  :o It took them long enough to come up with some safety devices.
