$10million Noosa gateway takes shape

Work on Noosa's new transport centrepiece - the $10 million Noosa Junction Bus Station - will start next week.

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan said the architecturally-designed bus station at Noosa Junction, at the intersection of Cooyar Street and Sunshine Beach Road, would feature seven bus bays for TransLink and inter-city bus services.

"This station will have drop off/pick up facilities for tourist buses, public toilets, three layover bays, a go card ticketing machine, short-term car parks, loading bays for the adjoining shops, upgraded footpaths, public plazas and bicycle storage," Ms Nolan said.

Ms Nolan said the centre would create a new gateway to Noosa Heads and up to 78 jobs before opening early next year.

"This centre will reduce traffic congestion on Hastings Street, help revitalise Noosa Junction and cater for future public transport growth," Ms Nolan said.

"I believe the standard of facilities and improved access to bus services will also encourage more residents to try public transport and leave the car at home."

Ms Nolan said the centre was a major investment in public transport for Noosa and the Sunshine Coast by the Queensland Government, Federal Government and Sunshine Coast Council.

"The State Government, through TransLink, has provided $5 million for the project, along with $3 million from the Federal Government's $1 billion Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council with $2 million," she said.

"TransLink has listened to community concerns about the location, design and operation of the station and will work with the community to minimise disruptions.

"TransLink has addressed many of those concerns by adding extra noise barriers and security. A no-idling policy will also be enforced with drivers to shut down engines after two minutes."

She said the bus station would contain many sustainable design features including use of recycled timbers, a 54,000 litre-capacity rainwater tank for use in toilets, cleaning and irrigation and more than 6,700 trees, shrubs and ground covers (many native species).

Federal Infrastructure and Local Government Minister Anthony Albanese said the $3 million in Federal funding was part of the Rudd Labor Government efforts to create local jobs while building the infrastructure the region needs for the long term.

"Once complete, the new transit hub will provide residents, visitors and tourists with a more seamless transfer to local transport networks," said Mr Albanese.

"It will be good for local businesses, and help address local traffic issues."

Sunshine Coast Council's Integrated Transport Chair Vivien Griffin said the Council was committed to improving public transport and providing substantial funds to do so.

"These projects show the great outcomes that can occur through partnerships with all levels of government," Cr Griffin said.

Traffic and parking conditions will change at the Junction as the bus station is built. Minor service changes will also be made when the station is integrated into the TransLink network.

What's your point? It is less clumbsy than "bus station".

Personally, I'd like to see TRANSLink and the Sunshine Coast Council also make some overdue improvements very soon to the 'main' Noosa Heads bus station (cnr Noosa Drive & Noosa Parade) downtown Noosa. For a major bus stop for Noosa Heads itself and Hastings Street (especially during holiday peak periods) this local bus station badly lacks facilities like toilet amenities and decent bus timetable / route map information and that's just a start.

I think this is actually standard across the board now. All the TL signage I can think of simply says "x station" or "x", regardless of whether it's bus, train or anything else.

Not sure I'm a huge fan of this - I'm all for consistent branding but who wants to direct me to South Bank station, platform 1?

Rail station, right?
Don't bus stations use platform A and B..?

At QSBS and UQ Lakes and the like they do. But on the busway they are numbered. Boggo Rd platforms are numbers 5 and 6, but pretty sure all the rest are just 1 and 2.

Makes enormous sense, doesn't it?  The busway element at Boggo Road does not even have the same name as the rail station (they should both be Boggo Junction IMO), and yet at South Bank they share the same name and are completely separate of each other's numbering.

Meanwhile, Roma Street platform 2 has 2 faces.

"People can come and check out the features of this state-of-the-art facility and ask questions of TransLink officers. With activities to keep the kids entertained, it will also be a good chance for people to familiarise themselves with the bus services operating from the station.

Several TransLink bus services will benefit from and utilise the new station including:

·Route 620 - Noosa to Maroochydore via Sunshine Beach

·Route 622 - Noosa to Maroochydore via Peregian Springs

·Route 626 - Sunrise Beach to Tewantin via Noosa Junction

"In line with the opening, there will be additional changes made to some of these routes and passengers are urged to visit the TransLink website or call the call centre for more detail."

Councillor Russell Green said coaches and tourism operators will also benefit from the new station, providing a convenient and central location for public transport and tourism in the region.

"This station will help revitalise Noosa Junction and cater for future public transport growth," Cr Green said.

"The station, located at the intersection of Cooyar Street and Sunshine Beach Road, features seven bus bays, drop-off/pick-up facilities for tourist buses, public toilets, three layover bays, a go card ticketing machine, short-term car parks, loading bays for the adjoining shops, public plazas and bicycle storage.

"The State Government, through TransLink, has provided $5 million for the project, along with $3 million from the Federal Government's $1 billion Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council with $2 million," she said.

Functional, stylish and designed with a Noosa feel.  It even includes picnic tables.  However, on Saturday, rain was being blown in though a gap in the roof, wetting some of the seating below.
